This series is different from the past detective stories. The Lieutenant is collection of true mystery stories in which the detective, Ninzaburo Furuhata, must solve ingenious crimes and outwit elusive criminals. Although Ninzaburo Furuhata is a government officer, he does not wear a tie. Although he specializes in murder cases, he does not carry a gun. He does not use violence. More than anything, Ninzaburo Furuhata conducts himself as a gentleman, and uncovers the tricks which outwitting genius criminals play by cool reasoning and smooth talking. In every episode, Ninzaburo Furuhata will introduce a different criminal in his memory, and share his experience tracking and interacting with these criminals.

This one generally means to not trust strangers.

The general meaning is, everyone you encounter is a good person.
-"Donguri no seikurabe" literally, "comparing the height of acorns", means
comparing things which have very little difference or are nearly the same.
The correct answer is supposed to be, "hakidame ni tsuru" which literally means, a crane on a garbage heap, to roughly translate to "a jewel in a dunghill".
But Imaizumi flaps his arms like a crane, which confuses Furuhata, prompting him to answer incorrectly with "tsuru no ongaeshi", which is a Japanese folktale.
-Tocchan-boya is the name of the comedy duo featured in this episode but it also refers to a man with a boyish look or disposition.
-Two large newspapers in Japan are, Mainichi Shinbun and Asahi Shinbun.
The fake newspaper in this episode is named Maicho Shinbun, which is an amalgamation of the names of these two newspapers.
