Miyuki Miyabe 4 Weeks Special [Eng Subs] (Complete)

Postby vulcan300 » Sun May 27, 2012 3:43 am

Hello all,

Vulcan 300 Fansubs is absolutely overjoyed to release subs for the Miyuki Miyabe 4 Weeks specials. These specials are an hour plus in length with a lot of dialogue so they take some serious time to translate, time and edit. Hopefully it's all worth it!

The raws can be found http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/torrents.php?search=miyuki+miyabe+4+weeks

Special thanks to furransu for uploading these awesome specials!!

@vulcan300 This is a wonderful special series! Thank you so much for the English subs. By any chance, are there any Japanese subs available?

@Hajime Crea I've got some of her (Japanese) novels in text format. Just wondering whether you have any of her novels translated into English, besides Brave Story and ICO Castle in the Mist? Would you be keen to trade or share? :-)

Unfortunately I haven't seen any Japanese subs for this series. Perhaps the uploader of the video files might have some? Sorry.

Thanks! I don't really have time nowadays to follow a full-length drama so I was looking forward to these specials.

Hi furransu,

We actually never use Japanese subs. Our translator prefers to do the translation and subbing from scratch.

That's why I find the vulcan300 fansubs more interesting and paints a better picture. Many thanks to your team's wonderful efforts in bringing us these subs. :salut:

Though having the original subtitles helps a lot in the course of language study, or even useful for those who may be hard of hearing, but usually speech dialogue in a movie/drama are not "translation" per se, or rather, I find it sort of "turn-off" to read "translated subtitles" that are literal (text-book) kind of translated works which fails to bring out the character roles or put the whole story-plot into consideration.

I don't, unfortunately. :-(

So far a few of her novels have received English translations; "Kasha" (which was published as "All She Was Worth" in English) , "Crossfire", "R.P.G" (published as "Shadow Family" in English), "The Devil's Whisper", "The Book of Heroes" and "The Sleeping Dragon".

Thank you for your reply and the information about her novels in English translation titles. It's certainly helpful for me. I'll still be happy to share the J-novels with you. Just PM me. :-)

Think I might have Level 7 (J-novel text) which is Week 4 of this Miyabe special series.

Thank you, Thank you and your team!

I was looking through the Japanese subs and studying the English subs... and wondering, (if I may ask)... are there a lot of editing to do from the translated version? Does someone else work on the timing of the subs or did you handle most of the stuff as Editor?

The amount of editing depends on the episode. I probably edited between 40% and 60% of the lines of dialogue in the first 3 Miyabe Miyuki specials, but only 25% in the last episode. That's why Episode 4 only took me a few hours of editing (I started earlier this evening and just and finished, and even managed to play a couple of hours of tennis in the middle). Our translator does a literal translation which I then massage to flow well for English speaking viewers. The edited version doesn't always match precisely with what's being said but the meaning is kept intact and is presented in a way that makes sense. As for your other question, translation and timing are both done by our translator. Some timing is tweaked during the editing process, mostly when some lines are broken up to provide more dramatic effect.

The end has come! And we're not talking about the Mayan calendar of death or whatever the people with tin foil hats are worrying about these days.

Subs for Episode 4 have just been posted. The last in the series was a good episode and I had a fun time editing it. Nodame's CHiaki makes a starring appearance in this one along with the new girl from Gochi Ni Narimas.

Enjoy! :)

Thank you for your reply. :D It helps me to understand better what goes on "behind the scene" in the making of subtitles. :) I think you did a wonderful job in editing the literal translation to make sense with the flow of story/scenario, and that's far more important than "word-for-word" translation.

It is also interesting to learn that some lines are intentionally "broken up" to provide dramatic effect! :thumright: It just occurred to me that in using this technique, the English subtitles do "build up" or create that sense of drama/suspense. :lol Now I know why I don't feel it while watching with the Japanese or Chinese subtitles. :P

Kudos to both of you!
