Synopsis

This series is different from the past detective stories. The Lieutenant is collection of true mystery stories in which the detective, Ninzaburo Furuhata, must solve ingenious crimes and outwit elusive criminals. Although Ninzaburo Furuhata is a government officer, he does not wear a tie. Although he specializes in murder cases, he does not carry a gun. He does not use violence. More than anything, Ninzaburo Furuhata conducts himself as a gentleman, and uncovers the tricks which outwitting genius criminals play by cool reasoning and smooth talking. In every episode, Ninzaburo Furuhata will introduce a different criminal in his memory, and share his experience tracking and interacting with these criminals.

Translation notes:
Episode 2:
A few times during the episode, Nakamura Ukon is referred to as: Rokudaime or 六代目, which would be in reference to his stage name Nakamura Ukon VI. His stage name refers to him as the sixth generation actor to adopt this name. As there is no equivalent translation in English, we took liberty and referred to him as "Master", which is a loose equivalent in terms of addressing such a person with respect and regard.

There are a few kabuki theater terms used, such as "suppon". "Suppon" is the lift-like mechanism that has been used in kabuki for centuries to raise a performer to the stage area. It is connected to an extension or walkway that extends into the audience called the "hanamichi". The "hanamichi" is used for dramatic entrances, and thus is why the "suppon" elevates a character to this section.

Oda Nobunaga: 16th century Japanese warlord who initiated the unification process in Japan. Oda Nobunaga was betrayed by one of his men, Mitsuhide Akechi, which lead Oda to commit seppuku or ritual suicide. The quote in this episode is attributed to him upon realizing this betrayal.

Ochazuke: a simple Japanese dish consisting of rice, with green tea poured over it. The rice is cooked and various toppings such as nori (seaweed), umeboshi (pickled plums) or tarako (salted roe) can be used to add flavor.
Episode 5:
Yonezawa is referred to as, "Yonezawa 8-dan", or 八段 which is a professional ranking of 8. The highest professional ranking is 9-dan.

Nakatani is referred to as, "Ryujin Nakatani", referring to him as holding the title of the Ryujin Tournament.

Shogi is often called Japanese Chess. There are some similarities, such as the pieces and how they can move.

kei, which is an abbreviation for keima 桂馬, is a piece that can move similar to a knight in chess.

gin, which is an abbreviation for ginshō 銀将, is a piece that can move similar to a bishop in chess.

fu, which is an abbreviation for fuhyō 歩兵, is a piece that can move similar to a pawn in chess.

hi, which is an abbreviation for hisha 飛車, is a piece that can move similar to a rook in chess.

Shogi is played on a 9x9 grid. Each player's pieces face forward and are moved across the grid. For both players, the far 3
rows of the board are a "promotion zone". By moving one's pieces into that zone, the player has the option to promote that
piece. To promote a piece, the player will turn over that piece to indicate it's promotion in rank. In most cases, this gives
that particular piece additional moves.

Thank you very very very much. I've been waiting to watch this for a long time.
By the way, when I tried to download it, it didn't work (I use a Mac). Is there a different kind of download for a Mac?

This is truly awesome. Didn't expect to see this subbed.
I've watched quite a few episodes raw previously, now going to enjoy it again with English subtitles.

Thank you!

i seriously think more people should give this drama a shot. its a classic yet the number of downloads for the subs is abysmal. if more people watch it, it will help encourage the subbing team continue with their releases

Its a bit surprising that so few people are downloading these subs. Maybe that may pick up as more episodes are released.

And while It's good to see that there are a few people that are enjoying this series, I realize that it's old and that probably turns some people off or rather, some won't give it a chance.
That's a shame.

We wanted to do this series because it's one of those series that surprisingly has never been subbed and deserves to be. Lack of downloads or interest is not a factor. We plan to finish Season 1 regardless.

But, those that are enjoying it can try to turn others onto this show by writing about it on blogs, message boards, etc...

Anyway, thanks for the encouraging words from everyone that is enjoying this series!

Thanks again for all your hard work. I think this drama will slowly get picked up by people, so i hope that you will continue subbing this. I was scared that it may get dropped like how the aibou project did because the subber felt that the demand was low.

Good luck with the project. :D

wow, first episode I was like... nah

then I had a translation job (pro one, no fansubber ;D) and I let episode 2 on... and I was like... "hmm..."

the third one onwards... lol i'm addicted... the guy was getting on my nerves and now I just find him so kool being acid and all... like.. knowing the culprit is trying to fool him

lol I also loved the minimalist setting of each episode, few external shootings and knowing from the start the culprit...

and the kenjisan on his bike is so damn kool ;D

thanks a lot for this drama! I'll be watching it for many nights til I finish this job ;D

I'll be seeding it for a long time ^^

I also just want to say thank you for these subtitles.
My boyfriend got me onto this show, and while I initially could only understand a fraction of what was going on, I found it entertaining. Now that I've discovered these subs, I'm completely hooked.
I'm very much looking forward to watching the rest of the episodes, and sincerely hope you and your team will continue to sub the whole show. I'm of the mind that more people would take an interest in the show once it's more readily accessible to an English-speaking audience. I hope you'll be the person to make that possible! ^_^
Thanks for all your hard work! Looking forward to the next installments. :)
