Ryomaden [Dutch subs] [Ep 1-5] (Straight from Japanese)

Postby Yankumi Subs » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:45 am

Based on the official Japanese subs from pubble at http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_82443.htm - translated to Dutch by a professional translator with more than 17 years of experience.

The subs are continously being updated based on my own experiences and your feedback - I'm not even using version numbers. Redownload in case of doubt!

The first 14 minutes of the original Japanese subtitles of episode 3 uploaded by pubble were broken, so credits for the timing go to Luna and izumisano at http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_81813.htm The Japanese however has been translated from scratch, as the English translation contained a few errors.

AFLEVERING 1: Hoge en lage samurai
AFLEVERING 2: Een laatbloeier?
AFLEVERING 3: De vervalste reispas
AFLEVERING 4: De vrouw van staal
AFLEVERING 5: Zwarte schepen en zwaarden

Wow! So surprise you found my timing useful, considering I don't speak Japanese. :lol

Credit for the timing goes to Luna14
Also, credit for translation mistake at line 00:01:29 goes to Luna14.

Chinese subs were not complete and no Japanese subs.
TV Rip version does not include that line either.
So, I just tried to guess and posted subs knowingly. :P

Thanks for solving the mystery.

Keep up the good work. :thumright:

They are incredibly useful, Luna! I gave up on subbing years ago because I didn't have a timer. This saves me so much time, that subbing is actually becoming fun again. I'm going faster as ever - thanks to you!

Leuk dat je Ryomaden naar het Nederlands vertaalt. Ik zal je subs zeker proberen :-)

Thank you so much for doing this!

I'm just the translator. Luna times and makes the English subs, so please credit her for her wonderful work.

Oh I wish we had your help for the English, since it would have been so much easier for you as a professional translator!
(It's not too late though....*grin*....you got time?)
I've never done this before and I don't know Japanese language or history.
So our first few episodes were based entirely on Chinese subs, as there were no Japanese subs then.
But I'd asked a couple of Fansub groups to take on Ryomaden at the beginning, and they all ignored me (>_<)

Now that you're on board, all the best to you! :thumleft:
(BTW, it's good you can script from the dialogue, since there are a few but rare errors in the official Japanese subs too.)

I've credited Luna for his/her hard work, izumisano!

Context is everything in this series. If there are sentences you wonder about in the episodes I've already uploaded, please don't hesitate to ask for my advice! As for episodes I haven't arrived at yet, please wait until I get there. Japanese is, as you know, incredibly context-sensitive.

Yes, you're right. Which is why it was necessary to rewrite much of it into our own words to bring out the nuances, and to understand the background of where they were coming from. It's one reason why I was a bit disappointed with some parts of the official NHK English subs as well. Although they were technically correct, it seems so much was being missed. But I'm saying this, of course, after having worked it for two years. Every time I read the old translations, I end up rewriting them. But I can't ask Luna to rework the subs again.

Thanks! Will keep in touch.

The Japanese is not only classical, the series also features countless dialects... all these nuances get lost in translation. And there's indeed a lot that needs free instead of literal translation, if you don't want to bombard the readers with footnotes that is :D

....which of course I did too, when I posted it in my own translation blog :P since there is so much historical background to fill in, in order to fully appreciate what's going on in the story.
