Cast:
Zaizen Naomi as Urasawa Yu
Minamino Yoko as Shiraishi Ako
Sano Shiro as Mano Takuma
Terada Minori as Sudo Yasutaro
Fujimura Shiho as Urasawa Yoko

Synopsis:

In the high culture of Kyoto, part-time university lecturer Urasawa Yu is called upon by the police to help investigate crimes involving art. With her discerning eye and her background as the daughter of an antique dealer, she is uniquely qualified to identify important art objects and to distinguish high quality fakes from real art. In the first episode, Yu meets Assistant Inspector Shiraishi Ako of the Kyoto Prefectural Police and helps solve a mystery involving the disappearance of the newly discovered ‘phantom’ painting by the Edo period artist Ito Jakuchu. This team of the quirky Yu and dedicated policewoman Shiraishi goes on to solve other crimes in the art world of Kyoto.

This drama is notable for its lessons in Japanese art and history. For example, the second episode involves a murder associated with a tea ceremony. Here we learn about the highest rank of tea bowls (yuteki tenmoku chawan), forbidden flowers in the tea ceremony (kinka) and the bombing of Kyoto during WWII. In the third episode, we learn that, before a wooden Buddha statue can be taken apart to examine the interior contents, the ‘soul’ or 'spirit' within must be moved out of the statue by a priest.

The playful interaction of the two primary characters along with the obvious art expertise of the screenwriter and the competent NHK production team make this a stimulating, educational and enjoyable series to view. And throughout we are treated to wonderful scenes of the autumn beauty of Kyoto.

English subtitles are brought to you by Sensei-tachi

Translation: jsensei
Quality control: sensei991

One of the challenges in the translation is the use of the Kansai dialect. For example, ‘ōkini’ is used in place of ‘arigatō’ and many verb forms are altered. The blog on the NHK web site indicates that a dialect coach was employed for this drama.
We hope that you enjoy this drama. Since this is our first subbing project, we would like to hear your feedback regarding improvements and suggestions as well as problems.

Awesome!

I've been losing hope there won't be any sub for this.

I love dramas that have a culture theme.

Thank you

Sweet! Will rewatch this drama at some point. There were some things I didn't understand when watching it raw.

Thank you so much for taking on this drama. The subs also work fine with the 1280x720 version that I had downloaded. Only the name Jakuchu at about the 32 minute mark of episode 1 is slightly mistimed. Such an enjoyable show -- thanks again!

Translation note -
If you watch closely Ep03 on the Mystery of the Shaku Nyorai Statue, you may wonder about the discussion of a baby tooth where the subtitle says. "Usually, when a tooth comes out, we throw it up or down...".

This refers to the custom in Japan of dealing with a baby tooth as follows. "If it is a lower baby tooth, throw it up onto the roof; and if it is an upper tooth, throw it underneath the 'en-no-shita' (the lower portion below the floor of a Japanese house). It is done so that the upper tooth grows healthy downwards, while the lower tooth upwards."

Many many thanks for this. I tried to sub this myself, since I know a fair bit about art, but I was banging my head on the desk over the Kansai stuff. Glad you picked it up.

The subs for Episode 4 have been uploaded. Episodes 5 and 6 will probably take a longer time before they are ready.

before I knew it, I keep coming back here to check on the subtitle's progress. so just wanna say thank you for taking up this project! :)

Kansai-ben is really not easy to understand. just like watching Detective Conan anime, when Heiji Hattori speaks I have to really read the subtitles or I'd miss what he says. I dont know if this is just me, but I find Kansai-ben really prominent and hard to understand when coming from Osaka people than Kyoto people. any of you feel that too?

Thanks for subbing this drama. Though I don't like any actor/sctress of this drama, but the story is very interesting.

The subs for this drama are now complete. Thanks for your support and encouragement! The production staff at NHK seems to have left the door open for another season at some future time. Let's hope that this can happen.

Thanks so much for subbing this series. I've really enjoyed watching it, and I hope you will tackle the next season if there is one. The mysteries are kind of mild, but the art aspect and the characters are quite enjoyable. This is one that I'm passing on to non-drama watching friends.
