Gomen ne Seishun! [Eng Subs] (Complete)

Postby niwiwin » Fri Oct 17, 2014 12:11 am

Image

Gomen ne Seishun!
Literal translation: Sorry, Youth
I use "Regret from My School Days" in the subs because this image says so.

The latest comedy from the famous scriptwriter Kudo Kankuro (Amachan, Tiger & Dragon) and his frequent TBS producer, Isoyama Aki (Ooku ~Tanjou~, Ryusei no Kizuna, Unubore Deka).

This drama is hilarious :D I hope even in English the humor is conveyed.
But not all ridiculous stuff, there are also touching moments.
I really hope you enjoy this drama. I think it's very good.

Cast:
Nishikido Ryo, Mitsushima Hikari, Nagayama Kento, Shigeoka Daiki, Haru, Triendl Reina, Kawaei Rina, Shirasu Jin, Kuroshina Yuina, Morikawa Aoi, Koseki Yuta, Suzuki Takayuki, Yamoto Yuma, Tomiyama Eriko, Hisamatsu Ikumi, Ryusei Ryo, Saito Yuki, Morishita Aiko, Enari Kazuki

Sypnopsis:
Hara Heisuke (Nishikido Ryo) works as a teacher at an all boys high school in Shizuoka Prefecture. 14 years ago he had an unfortunate accident which made his life go crazy. He has since become obsessed with his hometown and the school where he graduated from.
Due to declining enrollment at the all boys high school where Hara Heisuke works, the school plans to merge with an all girls high school next year. Prior to the merger of the schools, a culture festival is held for the students from the two schools. Hara struggles to make the culture festival a success.

Cast & synopsis taken from AramaJapan

Subs were made from http://jpsubbers.x10.mx
I used YYeTS's translation when I couldn't figure out the Japanese.
Thanks a lot to sevenjourney on tumblr for helping with slangs and other difficult Japanese terms.

Tell me if anything's wrong.
I'm not fluent in Japanese. Also not a native English speaker so please understand if the English is awkward.

Do you need srt?

In episode 3 there is this thing involving kanji. I had hoped that my on screen notes were enough but if after watching episode 3 you're confused, more explanation under the spoiler tag below
Heisuke started by writing 好. This kanji is read suki, which means "like".
If the 2 components are separated like this 女子 , these 2 kanji together are read joshi, which means girls
Now, boys (danshi) is written 男子
Kanji that consist of 男子 like "好 suki" consists of 女子 does NOT exist
Heisuke's homework was for the girls to come up with how to read that kanji if that kanji existed.
That's why the girls came up with "idiot" "annoying" "Filthy" "big idiot sh!t punk" " lewd" gross"

The next day, Nakai said the girls have decided to read that kanji as "ari" which means acceptable. It's not to the degree of like (girls are like/suki) but between acceptable or unacceptable they have settled on acceptable, which indicates Sanjo's girls acceptance of the merger.

I hope that was clear enough

Thanks for the subs. Comedy shows are hard to come by and judging by the first ep, it looks promising.

Yes, I liked the first episode so much I decided to sub it as quickly as I can.
Hopefully future episodes are just as good as this

Thanks for the subs. I watched it raw, loved it, but was super annoyed at the last part when Ryo was being "scolded" by the girls who are from the Catholic school. I want to know if it's "realistic" for these students to shout at their teacher... they're supposed to show respect.. but then again, I'll see what they are actually saying as I read the subs.

Holy heck, that was fast, niwiwin. Thank you for the subs.
I'm hoping this dorama is outrageously anti-authoritarian, furiously battle-of-the-sexes and just a tad sacrilegious (all religions included). :P
Don't disappoinment me, Kudo-sensei. :D

HELLO
I didn't do overall check and found mistakes (forgotten things mostly)
So, if you downloaded subs before I wrote this post, you might want to download again.
Nothing that significant, but I forgot to translate one line
I'm sorry

Yeah watch it again. But this is a comedy, the characters are written that way, acting over the top. It's Kudo Kankuro after all.

LOL I don't think Kudo Kankuro disappointed you. The "religious people" are either not that pious or have a ridiculous higher-than-thou attitude. This drama is so fun.

Don't know about Catholic schools in Japan, but thinking back to my experience in a U.S. Catholic school, students definitely did not 'scold' the Nuns (female teachers). Anyone crazy enough to do that would quickly be disciplined.

I know that's why I was surprised, since the one they "scolded" was Nishikiro Ryo's character, who is also going to be their teacher. I have been reminded that this is a comedy and what can be expected from the creator, but even comedy should have a bit of realism into it. I mean playing Buddhist monks can be comedic in a way and Nuns singing and dancing can be the same, but there are certain behavior if shown differently can be quite surprising. :)

Yeah, absolutely not realistic at all. Just like Gokusen students? Students in Japanese drama are often very cartoonish, I would say. Plus you have to remember that Sanjo students think very lowly of/hate Tonkou very much. So they probably don't have any respect towards a Tonkou teacher. Plus the story wants to convey that even though from the outside it is known as a religious, academically great, all-girls school, the students are in fact like super rude :lol

That's good to know. Even after more than 5 years of watching Japanese movies, I am still surprised at the over-the top acting in many J-doramas. As if I am looking at a completely different color. :blink

Thanks for the subs! The english was a little awkward in some places. Maybe you could slow down a little and try to word things a tiny bit better. Not trying to be critical. I really appreciate your hard work! Thanks so much!

STELLAR work, niwiwin.
I've worked 10-plus years as an English language proofreader and editor, and I rate your work A+. Your cultural notes are terrific, too. I love how you translated Hara-sensei's hilarious transfer request form, even though it was onscreen for only a couple of seconds. That's pro dedication! :salut:
Remember, folks, this is a Kudo Kankuro script, not your average elementary school level brain-dead dorama.

P.S. Concern trolls and backseat subbers might want to ensure their own English skills are up to par before embarrassing themselves in the forum.

Well, could you please specify where? The video is one hour long, about 1000 lines, I need to proofread the whole thing again? Appreciate your suggestion, but please be more specific. Better yet, give me the more grammatically correct/natural English.

I go as fast as I can but whatever I wrote is the best of my ability, I make an effort not to write stupid English. Or sometimes I'm too tired to try rearranging the semantics.

Aaaww, thank you very much!!
Hahaha well, a screencap of that form was floating around twitter, and it was hilarious so I decided to translate it.

@inlovewithmaki

Please be more precise when you choose to criticize the subber / niwiwin.

If you have nothing nice to say, please bite or hold your tongue. this is very demoralizing for niwiwin or any subber for that matter.

@niwiwin,

I hope one person will not stop you from continuing your subbing. I hope others are NOT as RUDE!!

Thank you for ep 2! I don't mind any mistake, it's better then not having any sub. I really appreciate all the effort you put into subbing dramas. Keep up the great work.
