Is it possible to allow uploads in 7z format?

Postby koshonin » Mon Nov 09, 2015 10:36 am

7z would be really nice, because it allows utf-8 filenames in directories and is free on linux and is therefore a good alternative to rar.

I don't think there are security reasons for not allowing it, but one cant be to sure nowadays

looking forward to a positive decision :)

added .7z to the list of allowed archive attachments.

allowed extensions of the "archive" group are now: 7z, ace, gtar, gz, rar, tar, zip

I don't know how popular .7z is... I guess .zip and .rar are by far most popular under Windows... and I still see users asking what rar files are.

People not knowing what .7z is should go to http://7-zip.org/ and download the 7-zip file archiver. It can also handle a lot of other archive formats as well.

Just a note for what it's worth
*.7zip is bad for recovery
*.rar requires lots of CRC which counters it's space advantages and does not really guaranty recovery; latest version isn't much better
*.zip is always recoverable

For the past half+ year there's been a bunch of news about 7-zip hacks. I think the latest news is a very serious matter as many programs are using the library. Only one of them could ruin your day.

I think 7-zip should be considered for a temporarily ban.
I don't think many people will be able to update everything (if all do get updated at all) within a year, though.
