srt subs won't hard sub

I downloaded a torrent and srt sub from another site, but when testing the converted file (I had converted the mp4 to avi, and hard encoded the subs, for playing on my dvd player) I discovered no subs.

since then I have converted it a dozen times, using freemake and format factory. I have tried changing the srt to ssa, of placing the file in a known working folder, and nothing works.

I am out of ideas??

Okay, I found the problem: the srt file had some errors in it, so I corrected them and everything appears to be fine now.
