"Alternatives" to the Western Digital HD Media Pla

Post by sfsjkid » Oct 14th, '09, 19:26

In another thread the Western Digital HD Media Player has generated a lot of interest but been playing with other stuff since I bought a Netgear EVA2000 Digital Entertainer Live before seeing the WD thread. The EVA seems to give about the same functionality plus network capabilities. Additionally, I recently bought a Playstation 3 w/120GB hdd, which, quite by accident and to my delight, I found does the same thing. The EVA seems limited to 704 resolution, while the PS3 will do much of my higher resolution stuff in Divx, something my even my Divx DVD player won't do. Neither will do AVI's from my video camera nor Real Media stuff.

Both products just list the Divx version but not much more. Can someone recommend a site where i can get more information about the various video standards? I would like to know more so I can come up with more intelligent sounding questions, but also to know why my hardware works the way it does in terms of what it can play. Thanks!
