I recently learned of Number Girl and now they are my favorite Japanese band ever and right up there on the list of favorite bands Japanese or not. So I was wondering is there anyone else in the Japanese music scene like them?

Here's a link to some spectacularly weird music! The album "Doopee Time" by Yann Tomita with The Doopees:

http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/01/y ... as_do.html

It's described in the post as "a strange and wonderful record"... and damn! It really is! Some people might find it more strange than wonderful (and I admit I only listen to it about once a year), but it's extremely funny and (helpfully for monolinguists like me) it's in English! But make no mistake, this record could come from nowhere but Japan!

Btw, check their archive if you want to be amazed and baffled.

I also like that band. I used to listen to them a lot but lately not so much.

Other kinda similar Japanese bands and bands I just think you might like:

Zazen Boys (project of 2 members of NUMBER GIRL)
SuiseiNoboAz (produced by Mukai of NG)
Vola and the Oriental Machine (drummer of NG is their front man)
Qomolangma Tomato
MO'SOME TONEBENDER
8otto
Rin Toshite Shigure
Jeepta
The Novembers
Fujifabric
Veni Vidi Vici
All the bands of Chiba Yusuke (The Birthday, Midnight Bankrobbers, Rosso, TMGE)
and Asai Kenichi (Ajico, Pontiacs, Blankey Jet City, Jude)

Tell me if you need more recs ;)

Hey I would like some recommandations. :) I'd really like to find more japanese bands of my taste but so far I've had very little luck. I've been listening to:
-SNSD Girls Generation (the japanese album and I love it)
-Tokyo Jihen (the newest work)
-Namie Amuro
and also some songs from Utada Hikaru, Sid, KARA...

As I said, I've had hard time finding any good bands. I usually prefer male singers but I don't really like KAT-TUN or Arashi etc. Sure they maybe have one or two good songs.

Anyways! I really like Korean (boy) bands. Or at least their music. It would be just wonderful to find something similar from Japan and not always search if the Korean bands have made any Japanese albums.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SenkemTrZMQ&NR=1

Find me something like that but in Japanese and I'll be forever grateful. :D

Hey,

It's the first time I post on this forum but I know it for a long time and I like it. ^^
I'm posting now because I wanted to introduce a singer, friend of mine, his name is Kodama and I really think it's awesome what he sings, for now he's just making covers but he expects to make his own songs later. He's belgo-japanese, lives in Brussels, sings mostly in english but there are one or two in japanese, if you ask he could make others in japanese ^^
I'll let you juge ;)

Have a good day, hope I'm in the right section!

I cannot believe it - 26 pages in and no one has mentioned Happi Endo! I am surprised because their song "Kaze wo Atsumete" was featured in the film "Lost in Translation".
I consider their songs pretty timeless. I am usually into the experimental stuff - whether its from the past or present, but Happi Endo just makes me smile.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZ8BKcyF17Q
"Natsu nan desu", but do try any song from any album.
For what it's worth, and I hate encouraging listing and ranking of music, this is a chart of the "best 100 Japanese albums of all time" via Neojapanisme, and it does have a lot of good material on it, including some of my faves YMO, Blue Hearts, etc., as well as some deeper influences like Boredoms and Flower Travelling Band. It is absolutely a subjective list, of course.
http://neojaponisme.com/2007/11/09/100- ... ck-albums/
And finally, the weirdest song I found on the Cyber DAM karaoke system ( to my great delight): P-Model - "2D or not 2D" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj13Y_H6 ... st_related

hi,
does any body have any good recommendations for Japanese music? In terms of bands? Solo artists are good too.
KAT-TUN is pretty good. Does Gackt still sing? I thought Secret Garden was his last.

What series has a better collection of songs than Long Vacation (CAGNET) and Love Generation (also CAGNET)?

Usually it's just one good song or two, but these two series had a bunch in each.
