I speak English Cantonese and Italian completely fluently, I can speak French Spanish and German from learning at school since i was 8 and after about 9 years i'd say im quite good. I know quite a bit of mandarine from watching too much tv (and it helps knowing cantonese) and lessons since the age of 11. Also i know Latin and can speak it but it sounds weird and i don't know if it counts as a language...does it?

I only know two, English and sign language (America Sign Language). I wish I can learn more...

Actually, I only use English to read and write and sign language to speak, lol.

I would like to learn Japanese sign language as well as reading in Japanese but I will ending up never use it because no one use it in America lol.

Anyone here is fluent in sign language? Not have to be America Sign Language but can be sign language from your homeland/country.

I wish my cousins would read this thread because being chinese, living with chinese speaking mother, surrounded by chinese speaking relatives and not speak a word of chinese is just bizarre. I don't understand.

Also, I've been learning Portuguese on the net by myself. I can speak very little, and I understand it more or less.
Also, I understand some Spansih aswell, because I used to watch Mexican soap operas.
I'm learning German at school, but it's not my cup of tea.

Fluent in English. Although Mandarin is my first language, it kind of...died after I started school..Since I was raised to speak Mandarin at home. But now, that's not so much the case. Self-teaching myself the Mandarin I've forgotten. =/

i'm fluent in the first three but i've only recently started learning japanese and german. i taught myself a bit of sign language a few years ago but i'm a bit rusty on this one now.

i wish we had a japanese language class back in my hs coz i'm pretty sure i would've been fluent in nihongo by now if we had... :glare:

German (native)
English (fluent)
Japanese (slowly but steady getting there)
French (rusty, haven't used it ever since school, but I still understand most of what I hear)
Russian (same thing)
Latin (it's better than my French)

Elvish (used to be somewhat fluent years ago, but those days are long gone, happens when you read The Professor as kid)

Do C++ and the rest count as languages? :P

Well my first language is Spanish and I learned English pretty young. I've taken 3 years of German in school and went on an exchange program to learn Japanese. I want to improve the last two and learn Korean and perhaps French....maybe Arabic....mostly I just like different forms of writing. Learning a language is like opening a little door into the culture, ne?

Thai is my first language, the second is English (but not that fluent). I used to know a bit of French when I was in grade 10-12. I'm now learning to speak a little Mandarin and Korean also (just learning from Internet and from watching the series).

My native language is English. My parents are Filipino so I understand 99.9% Tagalog. As for Japanese ... maybe like 40%? I actually understand a lot more than I think.

But really ... all I can speak is English ... and if I tried hard enough Tagalog. But I'm REALLY trying to learn Japanese. :D

English, but random bits of Spanish from the 6+ years I took it in school do pop out at random moments. I remember a bit of my biblical Hebrew, but my Arabic is getting rusty from disuse.

I give you guys props for knowing so many languages. :thumright:

I can only speak english fluently.

but I did I grow up in a neighborhood where almost everyone spoke spanish as their first language and english as their second, so all my friends spoke spanish and i even took three years of spanish class, but i didn't pay attention much, so i only know the basics. So i cant really say i could speak spanish. But with the bits and pieces i know i can understand it pretty well.

And i recently got a japanese/English dictionary. So next year im excited to take up japanese classes. 8)

use German, Swedish, English fluently (almost and not in that order) on a daily basis.

Barely grasp a bit Japanese in simple phrases, and as someone else said,
does puter lingo's count :D

It is a scary fact, that I can probably insult people better than most in about three or four more languages, but at least I can apologize profusely in just as many :study:

french english japanese portuguese fluently
I do understand spanish and survive by mixing with portuguese
I have some basis in mandarin, the grammar is easy and I already know a lot of letters, but I am not able to speak.
More recently I started hindi and tibetan, but not intensively.
I think I'd rather go for korean, because when I watch the dramas there are so many words that sound like in japanese!

1st language- English. I'm American, so it's obvious.

2nd- Italian. My whole family is Italian and I actually learned this first but not having to use it as much, my English is better and more natural. I'd say I'm fluent enough though.

3rd- Japanese. It's my major but I'm on an intermediate level only.

4th-French. I took it all throughout high school but I've sadly forgotten most of it.

5th- Spanish only because I learned very briefly in middle school and because of it's similarities to Italian. I also know some very basic phrases of Mandarin. That's it.

Do programming languages count because then I know quite a lot ;D

I always have found writing much more difficult than speech, atleast in the correct grammatical forms.

I disagree with having to know 50% of a language for one to say you know the language, you can get by with far less then that.
With some languages most of the people wouldn't be able to say they know the language if they have to know 50% of the language even though it's their native language.

English is my first language since I live in America. My parents are Bengali so I picked up on that when I was young. I've been taking Japanese for five years since 8th grade so I can hold a conversation and understand a lot of things people say...I just wish I took it seriously the first four years. :lol Also, I can read Arabic but can't speak it. And I taught myself a little bit of Russian.

Hoho, another native Hungarian? Hi there, my pal xD.

So, my mother tongue is Hungarian as well, I've studied German for 12 years, but I guess my English is way better than German (I've kind of neglected it recently and I'm not glad about it). Starting this Fall I'm starting to learn Russian and Japanese at the university.

It makes them three, but will go up to five soon =).

First language: Tagalog, (used to know Visayan, but lost it because hardly use it anymore)
Second language: English

Both first and second are fluent

Right now I learned Japanese in college, but learning more from watching all these animes and Jdoramas. Also learning Korean by watching lots of Korean dramas. Can understand 70% of Jdoramas and 40% of korean language. Writing though is another issue. :lol Even though I watch Chinese dramas too, I can never catch any phrases or at least a few words except Wo Ai Ni  .

In order of fluency... English, Afrikaans, Japanese, Dutch, Japanese Sign Language, Xhosa.

So, technically 6, but I only started learning JSL a few months ago, and my Xhosa keeps being replaced with Japanese words. :P So... 4 confidently, and 2 with a bit of a struggle and lots of thinking time. :)

My first language was Chinese (Mandarin) but i didn't officially learn how to write, read and speak it more properly until last summer when I began to study hard in chinese at home. It helped me improve and I hope to keep studying until I can read and understand almost everything. I learned pretty fast only because most of the stuff I studied I already knew how to say in chinese but had no idea how to write or read any of it.
My second language is English. I had some trouble picking up on this when I was little, so I was in ESL for two years after kindergarten but I turned out to be a better writer than a speaker. I totally flip out when it's my turn to speak up in class. I just can't do it. ><
My parents say I learned French really fast in junior high school but since I only had that language class for a year I forget everything afterwards. It makes me sad to think of it but I want to relearn it in school again. I've been pondering for some time about learning Japanese... I don't think I'll have a problem with writing the kanji since they are basically chinese characters borrowed into the japanese language. Still, I have doubts about the speaking part ... I also have some degree of interest in the korean language but I'm sure if I am going to learn japanese or korean it's going to be tough.

If I may ask a question to everyone responding to this thread, how do you guys learn more than one language? Do you buy one of those self learning/teaching books on how to learn a language? Do you take any classes for a language? What other kinds of methods are available to learn a new language and how?

Well, I'm pretty sure the majority are just being show-offs and count what they learned in HS (hardly an effective way to learn any language) and think they can speak Japanese because they know moonspeak.

Me, I've been studying Korean full-time for a year now and unlike some people in this thread, I'm not going to overestimate myself and say I'm fluent in Korean just because I've put close to a thousand hours into it. Languages as complex and foreign as any Asian language take several thousands of hours of dedicated, focused work to truly master.

Well learning a language in any way takes takes a lot of determination and motivation. Self study takes even more since you don't really have anyone to poke you to study you can get lazy.

I study Korean alone but I use the university textbooks and workbooks. It's good for reading, writing, and comes with audio to help with pronunciation and listening comprehension but of course that's still lacking in actual conversational practice. That's why my mother is trying to set up for one of her friends' wife, who is from Korea, to tutor me.

As for how easy or hard any learning method is... well the only thing I can say is, however you learn a language, it takes years of serious study to be at a level you can call fluent. Even bare minimum conversation skills takes months of serious study and use of the language. To learn a language you need to be really serious (spontaneous or half-assed studying will do no good), determined, and patient. A language is something you will be studying for the rest of your life actually. Even our mother tongues. I still learn English words all the time and there are hundreds, probably thousands, of words I and most people don't know, but I'm still a fluent English speaker.

If you study on your own a tip I can give you is tell your family and maybe your friends that you are studying. They can help keep you motivated. They will ask how you're progressing and help you practice even. Every time my grandma calls she asks me what chapter I'm on today. When I see my parents they ask what I learned today. My mother tests me with flash cards and quizzes.

Fluent in:
English
Chinese (Mandarin and Fookien)
Filipino

Knows basic Japanese. I'm not good at it though.. I passed JLPT level 4 but stopped studying Japanese because of a lot of factors. x_X

How to learn a language:
I'm not sure how to explain since I've been taught to speak the three languages I'm fluent in ever since I was a kid. English, Chinese, and Filipino were drilled into me at home. As for Japanese, there are a lot of schools, centers, and online training materials. I studied in a language center.

Studying a language for thousands of hours won't guarantee that you'll learn to speak it fluently. You also need hard work, dedication, motivation, and practice.

Two, English and Japanese
Sad to say But I am only fluent in English. my second language is Japanese. It is just basic conversational Japanese. I have forgotten a lot of my written Japanese over the years. I can no longer remember a lot of kanji .I can understand most of spoken Japanese Dramas but I do resort to the subs for some of the words or the Dictionary's and translator's online.
Currently trying to brush up on my Japanese. Literacy
I would like to at least get to Business level JLPT 2
