Yeah, I just finished watching the entire series and the "special" and was rather confused as to the ending of the special... Didn't really seem overly clear but because the whole special was rather rubbish, I dont care too much.

That was my only critism of the series - I found myself wondering what was going on, or whether or not what had happened was very likely!
Like the bit where Onizuka rescues the two students from the themepark place, how did he know where they were cause he didn't answer the phone when Murai called the woman?
And how did he get stabbed? Surely someone would have noticed whilst he was sat down at the desk, if Todou had crept up behind him and plunged a knife into his back - or if he had stabbed onizuka when they were fighting, wouldn't he have dripped blood all around the school when he walked in to do the test?
Minor points, I know, but still confused me, and stole some of my "suspense of disbelief"
On the whole though, I enjoyed GTO a lot, and as I haven't seen the anime, or read the manga, i'm not dissapointed due to comparing it to anything. As a stand alone series, it had happy bits, sad bits, bits that even thinkin about them now make me a little sad....

So not life-altering, but definitely worth watching...

As for onizukas general personna, it kinda weirded me out as well, but that was his character. It probably wouldn't have hurt his character to be a little bit more normal, and less like a manga character, but that just added to its strange comedy...

Did GTO ever have an OST released? I wanna here the piano version of the Poison song that geoffropuff and Iceberri mentioned on the dramaWiki. And that other guitar riff that sounds a bit like the start of the Fleetwood Mac song Landslide (where Miyabi is putting flowers down in the middle of the baseball court, ep9 @0:08 ).

EDIT: Ahhh - search for GTO in the torrents section yields the answer - its amazing what searching the forums can acheive if you really put your mind to it :S

Anyway, I really like the music in GTO!

EDIT2: OK, just finished getting the OSTs that are available here BUT it doesn't have the song I liked!!! nooooooooo! Any ideas anyone?

I loved this series...was the first live action series that I ever watched...so I really enjoyed it...it also helped in my further pursuits of being a teacher...watching it just made me realize how much I've been affected by my teachers and hope to do the same for future generations

Possibilities

Post by tangyteng » Nov 9th, '06, 03:05

I'm pretty sure that both the Live action GTO and the anime GTO are finished, but after the shitty GTO movie, I was thinking they could do another drama special/movie to make up for it

My idea was:

Fuyutsuki does not show up for class one day and Principal Uchy comes in to 2-4 and says Fuyutsuki will be out for a while and to please respect the sub. Kids moan and groan but are delighted to see GTO as the sub.

Enter Kanzaki Urumi who was cruelly cut from the live action.

She outwits GTO and reveals his lack of knowledge. She claims her intelligence can get her through life, she needs no friends or teachers.

Long story short, Kanzaki is "taught" by GTO when all of the students vouch for him. She does her classroom terrorism (blowing up stuff in the school) and blames it on GTO but is astonished when GTO cleans it up with the help of his students. Kanzaki is faced with how all of the students support GTO and help him clean (including Toroko, Rika from the drama special, Touden Shinichi, and Ayano and Raku from the movie). How it could be set up I have no clue but it would be fun to have a total GTO reunion :).

GTO launches into a speech saying that people can learn things in school that is not in books. He says learning from peers is more satisfying than competing or whatever.

BTW my friend has a high level position in disney and he told me Disney is looking for hit foreign shows to introduce to the US much like Ugly Betty. I suggested GTO and showed him the first episode. Keep your fingers crossed people, GTO is not neccesarily dead!

My friend says that in this situation there are three options:

1) Buy the rights of Great Teacher Onizuka and recast it in English.
2) Buy the rights of GTO live action and dub it.
3) Make a ripoff show with GTO as the model.

Of those three, I guess the least damaging/offensive to japanophile purists is #2.

By the way, what makes you automatically assume that Americans will ruin GTO? I thought our version of "The Ring" was pretty good.

the chances of any of the above happening is so slim, Disney will probably not allow those adult themes like smoking, porno, S&M, stalking, suicide, bullying, blackmail, etc. Unless...it is put on ABC or a sister network...

nothing........... :glare:

If Disney don't allow all of these to be in GTO, then GTO is ruined and it'll be crap. Worse then the GTO movie

I think its really gooooooooood.
You get to see real people act out the characters and also what kinda differences and similarities the drama, anime, manga has.

The acting was fantastic and thats why I love it so much.
The pervertedness of the show was toned down a lot compare to the anime, but thats to be expected I think.

Do give it a try, the drama is a classic. Least I think so

yeah that is why I said that if it ever is sponsored by Disney it would not be on the Disney channel or toon disney but on ABC or possibly ABC Family. I mean, look how much "adult themes they pack into desperate housewives... GTO is pretty tame

to respond to angel 551, after you watch the drama the anime is a big piece of crap. The anime is pure corny, almost childish comedy while the drama is more human and has more characterization. That being said, the anime is much longer.

Actually, Gokusen and Dragon Zakura are HEAVILY based on GTO ... GTO was one of the first really popular school dramas that led to the creation of the newer dramas that you see now. Its popularity set the school drama story "standards" and also gave producers an insight on what teens like to watch. This was one of the fist drama that got ME into watching j stuff....6 years ago (I know its older than that though) ...and ever since then I have seen many that tried to copy its goodness ^_^ and discussing topics like bullying, gangs/yakuza, youth, love, friends etc. in school.

Its what you call a classic.

Gokusen is definitely based on GTO's theme....only they replaced the teacher with a female and story-wise, Gokusen is on a much lower scale comparably (having watched both) But anyway, I know what you mean.....if you watched the newer ones first and then the old, you might not appreciate it more I guess or see that THIS is what was actually the ORIGINAL xD :lol

Yea, thats true, however i think Dragon Zakura is A LOT better then gokusen, only cause there are some differences between the two and between GTO.

btw, have you seen Kinpachi Sensei??? It is very very similar to GTO and it is alos one of my all time favorite Jdoramas

Really?? I actually haven't watched Dragon Zakura but read its summary. I was thinking of downloading it when I heard Yamapi is in it but when I read its another sensei/school drama, I kinda dreaded to see if its good or not..... scared I would be disappointed with overly used & repetitive morals and plot =___=
But since you say its better than gokusen, I think I might reconsider xD

I have never heard of Kinpachi Sensei....hmm.....

Do give it a shot. Abe Hiroshi does a good job as the sensei/lawyer. Its rather entertaining.

Never heard of Kinpachi Sensei??? I'm surprise you didn't catch it in the GTO.

not sure if this is a spoiler or not...
Remember when Onizuka went into the video store and he asked to rent the drama serie Kinpachi Sensei??? The 2 students who took the photo of him and the girl laughed at him for renting the drama, maybe because he's trying to learn something from Kinpachi Sensei and incorporate his teaching methods into his own.
For me, I get the feel that GTO was influenced by Kinpachi Sensei a bit.

You can download it here at D-addicts actually.
It might be hard getting seeds though as this one is quite old and it was put up a long while ago.

I should be able to help with the seeding over the weekend.

i heard the drama for GTO is 12 episodes and the movie for GTO is only 108 minutes. Both videos feature Sorimachi Takashi as the main character (Sensei Onizuka), but different side actors. i haven't seen either videos. which one do you prefer the drama or the movie??

I really liked the drama. As for the movie, the only recurring character is the main character. Actually, he's not even the main character in the movie. The main characters are a pair of reporters I believe. I thought the movie was pretty boring.

LIFE ALTERING!!! ahh wow i didnt expect so many people to choose that the most!

it was just about life-altering for me actually.. it was one of the first jdramas i ever started watching. i was in middle school at the time, i think, and really - the way he is a teacher left a big impression on me. i don't think i'll ever meet a teacher like him.. i mean like, i see my own teachers and all i ever hear them talking about in the office is when the next day off is and their paychecks.

i really liked this drama, special and movie a lot! it's nice to see changes (real or unreal) even if they aren't happening to me.

Life altering. I swear to God it is. I watched GTO and it really inspired me. I mean, Onizuka really inspired me to live my life the way I want and not care about what others think about me, because as long as I like me, nothing could be better. Also, to try to help others the best way I can.

Sounds like bullshit, but I'm being very serious here. It's a must watch, not only does it have morals and life lessons, but it's insanely funny.

I wouldn't put it as best drama ever, but I really enjoyed it and would probably watch it again. The chemistry between Soramachi Takashi and Matsushima Nanako really shone through and made the show a lot of fun to watch.

Very heartwarming drama. I didn't expect GTO teacher to be wise and heartwarming. I like the way he deals with students and trusts in himself and others to work out whatever problem they are facing. He also has a lot of devotion towards his class. Besides Queen of Classroom, one of my favorite dramas to watch and to laugh at the funny moments.

It does have English soft subs, but I can not find out where they were.

Also

Does anybody know where I can purchase the version of the song Poison sung at the end of the movie spinoff? It has the inclusion of a chorus of boys and girls that I really enjoyed. I imported Takashi Sorimachi's 'Best of Best' CD that had two versions of the song Poison, but neither was the one I was looking for.

I liked this version much more than the anime. Onizuka's character was portrayed a lot better, the way he dealt with the students had a lot more emotion to it tbh.

Damn, i wish i had a teacher like him :hissy:

According to the Subtitle Index there are no soft subs for GTO.
You can download the hardsubbed version though.

Hm.. not much to comment about. I would prefer the similarity of the character(using their name and preference action as well), and the storyline seems inspired from the manga, but apparently, the actual live action version was a bit disappointment on my part. I was actually looking forward for the production to adapt from the manga, meaning a actual interpretation of the manga, since i was a fan of it first. But, if a non-reading fan of GTO watch the series, i think it will impact them as much as i was reading the manga. Not to compare, but the actors of live action suits the personality, even the appearance of the character, which is based from the manga spot-on.(Wish tomoko would be even cuter!!). The storyline is ok, considering it should be logically based and compliment the real world.

I would recommend this dorama for a "watch it on your own term" and don't expect too much if your a manga fan.

PS- the anime is crap. THe manga is SAIKO. The dorama is a-OK.

Great Teacher Onizuka - high quality?

Post by risingdragonx » Apr 10th, '18, 10:43

Just received a GTO 1998 DVD set purchsed from a reputable ebay seller.
The three main problems are:
1) The subtitles are TERRIBLE. Full of mistakes.
2) It has been modified for pg-13 audience, meaning they have cut out parts they deem not suitable. Which is disappointing since some funny moments and story line have been cut.
3) The image quality and large subtitle font overall is poor.

I left them a negative review.

I've downloaded two versions so far, but both are low quality image.. the better one is 350mb per episode.

Anyone know where I can buy or download a high quality version?
