Yeah.. I was 10 and all I did was play outside with friends and build tree houses.. But that's just what kids those age do. I do wonder what I'd be doing nowadays if I didn't have a computer. My guess is watch a lot of TV. But how did people spend their days in the time when there was no television? Now that must be tough! ^^
I remember being the first of anyone I knew to have an email address.
It was AOL and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
I remember explaining to people at my work how the Internet worked and they looked at me with this incredulous look!
"Really? You can talk to anyone anywhere on the computer?!"
these days are gone with the winds, ..lol

I was like 13 when I first acssesed the internet n i was soo addicted to it @ that time, now i only use it when i have so much spare time or just access d-addicts 4 downloading n updates abt dramaz... but honestlly life was much healthier back then... so ya ok i used 2 watch TV 4 long hours but eventually i'll get bored and play as kids should. Now, kids hv internet, TV, video games... I dnt see them enjoyin their childhood. A kid who's like 7 yrs old have accesses to the internet and is addicted to it... You might say it's the parents fault but what can they do if this is the trend nowadays!?
I really feel sry 4 the coming generations 0_o god knows wat they'll have later..

Life before computers and the internet?! Goodness, I remember life before hand-held hair dryers and caculators - oh, and cassette tapes, electronic typewriters, microwaves... Oops, my age is showing!! Can't imagine life without a computer though - writing everything longhand was a PAIN!!! (Yes, the internet is great too, but not having to write longhand is the biggest benefit - trust me!)

I remember. Lord it's painful to, but I do. I remember actually spending time outside after school everyday and not sitting in front of the computer and just staring blankly as I surfed the internet. Now I can't imagine my life without it.
I wouldn't be able to download the dramas I love so much from d-addicts or clubbox.

Yeah. Life without computers is actually great. People are just getting too dependent on these soul sucking machines. Willpower, I say! Go enjoy the outside world. You don't want to tell your grandkids you did the computer all day...

Ano.. I'll read everyone's post after I'm done with mine...
Anyways, here's my answer: Hardly. I'm 16 now... I think I've learned the internet existed before we arrived to Canada when I was 8 (I got super addicted around 10-11) Well, I remember having a life before this Like, actually going out to play and stuff. Now my social life exists in school, and it's nothing to brag about.

It depends on who you are.
Naturally, I'm a couch-potato.
Before, the era of internet and computers, I watched TV all day.
Even with the temptation of computers, some people are more incline to play outside.
Now, I don't watch TV. I just download dramas.
Computers provide more interaction than a tv would.
Computers has become your extension of yourself.
I do recommend having a social life and being outside, but the era with out internet and computers really sucked.
I love, by just clicking your mouse, you can find or answer anything you want.
You want to find out the length of the English channel, you can google it and find the answer.
If you want to make sushi, just search on youtube or google to find instructional videos to make them.
The internet and computers are awesome man.

Ahh, I remember the days when I had no computer and no internet, and didn't even know that there is such a THING as internet and all that. It was the best time of my life. Now it's retarted! People are staying more inside then outside, and it's just STUPID...although I'm a heavy computer and internet user, I still hate it...I wish it was back to the old days where everyone went outside and to the libraries to get their info and to comunicate you won't be opening MSN or Yahoo, or w/e, you'd be going over to your friend's house and having a blast instead of ruining you eye sight and brain cells. Hate technology, but at the same time love it more then life itself. Funny ne.

Ahh life without computers and internet man those were the days!!! more face to face communication and without net and games you were forced to make your own entertainmet, lol. But still without PC's and net we would be without instant information and think how would us avearge D-addicts get our drama kicks?!!!!
Lol, life without the phone seems inconceivable today. Hmmm all this modern technology is gearing towards less face-to-face communication between people - man include nanotech and virtual reality we could all one day be living in a MatrixSimple_Insecurities wrote: speaking of which,.... can you imagine life... before the telephone!?!
lol... I remember as a kid I had to move my entire computer down stairs to the phone line. And because my Dial-Up cost by the minute, I could only go on for a couple of hours every other Sunday... It sucked.
I had to plan what I would do, and allow so much time for it... I'd be like 10 minutes to check e-mails and delete all the junk and porn mail.
30 minutes to check NBA and Rally results, cores and news.
20 minutes on chatroplis chat rooms
20 minutes of downloading pictures of sexy girls... an so on.
About a year ago my Internet was cut off for a month because of a late bill, and I had to try and remember what I did before I had the Internet for entertainment. However roller blading and climbing trees had kind of lost its appeal now I was 20+...

A month ago I bought a pair of badminton rackets/battledores. The weather was rainy and windy, thus we (my boyfriend and me) couldn't play badminton. But yesterday we were able to!!! And I have to tell you it was real fun!!! It brought back memories and since yesterday I am like a cheese mite... It was much more useful than anything else: we were in the fresh air, did some exercises and had fun. I can't wait to play it again. (and we are over 20!)
Nowadays people can't imagine the world without mobile phones and internet, but I am really upset because my younger brother plays CS PC game. He plays it every day, cc 5-6 hours and for cc 10 years...
Hmm... Life before a computer. I was what, 5? Then entered games like Sim City and The Incredible Machine. I've been hooked ever since. Never used phones much though. Didn't get my first until my 18th birthday but part of that could be due to the fact that I'm almost always in front of a Computer with IM programs turned on
although i am studying IT and i feel that i can never ever survive without my laptop and Internet access, Geez i think i used to be a better person without all these stuff
well i used to have fun more than now i was an active person but now mostly i spend all my free time surfing the net and moving from one website to another..
i even forgot how it feels to watch TV ..

Haha I replied on this post before, but never really answered the question.
Life without the computer or internet would be boring indeed. Well if I was still living in the Philippines, I would always play outside but that was probably because there was nothing to do. I never liked watching TV much in the Philippines because the shows were mostly news or boring soap operas
But once my family moved in America, there was nothing to do outside because it was too restricted. I mean in the Philippines (we lived in a province) its free roaming. You can pretty much run around everywhere without seeing cars or laws hindering your path. As a kid, I feel like an explorer
But since my family is pretty much permanent in America, then without computers I would spend most of my time watching TV or playing video games. And be ignorant about other cultures and have a total mind melt down for watching all these retarded American shows nowadays. Oh and also being a computer science then without computers, I would have no job.
Well one good thing about not having a computer is having more time to sleep and having 20/20 vision. Haha wondering how many other people have to wear prescription glasses.

I have read one or two of these posts. Everyone seems very young, even Groink...
I am almost afraid to post my remarks. Yes I do remember when we didn't have computers or TVs...or radios. I can remember my favourite uncle building a crystal set and I was thrilled to put the heavy earphones on and listen to a pianist playing in London in the Crystal Palace. We lived about a hundred miles away so it was a small miracle.
So...you don't know what a crystal set is?? You can still buy the makings and build one I think. I'm sure you can find out on the internet..........
I remember when a radio was rather large and had to stand on a table. It was run by wet and dry batteries. The dry battery was quite large and heavy and lasted about three months I think. The 'wet' batteries were filled with acid and had to be re-charged once a week. This is why you had two .One in the radio and one in the shop being charged. The terminals for each kind of battery had to be carefully clipped on and tightened down.
Radios then had valves which lit up inside the casing. Some years ago here in US we bought a German radio and it also has valves. It has a fine wooden casing and the tone is much more pleasant than modern day TV or radio.
And now I love my computer and talking to people in Asia and learning all sorts of interesting stuff about the world. It's a small world after all.

I've lost a ton of stuff, too. It's horrible when you lose stuff. Now, I try to have 2 backups of everything, on separate hard drives. Yeah, it costs a lot to do that, but I think it's worth it.garnet07 wrote:Man actually my external hard drive crashed on me also this summer and lost about 80GB worth of drama, manga, other stuff...Anyways, I remember using a computer since 4th grade and usually used it only for typing and playing Oregon Trail.
I remember playing Oregon Trail in grade school. We were allowed to play it when we were done with our computer lessons, so I always rushed through work, just so I can play. I actually bought the Original Oregon Trail (never liked the newer ones) and I still play it now.
I don't even know how I survived without computers and internet. I remember all I did was sit there and watch TV. Now, I can't even watch TV without having my computer in front of me. With all the Florida storms, whenever there's a blackout, I'm bored out of my mind.

Actually we've had a comp in the house just about as far back as I can remember - about 1986. I think it had a 20MB HDD and was about 10MHz. I remember we had to fiddle around with the 4MB of RAM allocation in order to play some games off of 5.25 inch floppy disks. I even remember some single density single sided floppies, with a massive capacity of 320KB. Man, the days of 2 colour games and midi sounds, so long ago.
I do remember what it was like without the net. It just meant information was much harder to come by, and books were the primary source of information.

Same here! I'm guessing I'm as old as groink since I too was an undergrad in Computer Studies in the early 90s but coming from the Philippines, the experience was much more "primitive" although I don't know what a crystal set is. Growing up, our stereo system was encased in a bureau-type wooden furniture that we had to dust and polish every other day. Same with our first colored tv. Since we were under martial law then (in the 70s), there were only 5 television channels, 6 if you're lucky enough to get FEN which aired from Clark Airbase. The stations carried the more popular American shows like Combat, Charlie's Angels, etc. When the dictator felt like exercising his oratorical skills, then tough luck for the whole nation, each and every station carried his day-long speech.Peggy wrote:I am almost afraid to post my remarks. When we were kids we had one phone line with a party line. So if you have the misfortune to have as a party line a girl's dormitory -- then you're out of luck. Nevertheless, we managed to stay on the phone for hours on end with our friends. The older women in our household had "phone pals" much like this generation's "text-mates" or they make friends with the party line like today's chat groups. In those days, it took 15 years from applying for a phone line to actually getting one. I had a classmate whose mom applied for a phone line when she was pregnant with my classmate. Eighteen years later they got it. But now we have multiple cellphones each with 2 sim cards.
Our first hand-held device was a transistor radio that later evolved into the first Sony Walkman in our teens. We've already had the earbuds but only for one ear. In our teens, we had the Betamax 8 where we play videos we rent from a place half-a-kilometer away from our house.
The first time I saw a computer was at a friend's house. It did not have a HDD. Its monitor was a black and white tv and the external memory was a cassette tape. When I started my undergrad degree, my dad bought me my first computer which had a 640kb ram and 2 5 1/4 in. floppy disk drives. The first computer game I played was strip rock-paper-scissors with an anime character.
In college we learned how to program the chat box that was the predecessor of today's instant messenger. It fascinated me that I could actually "chat" online with my classmate who occupied the cubicle next to me in the computer lab. I remember our Thai professor who droned on and on about Automaton Theory not knowing that he was talking about the internet.
One major advantage of growing up without computers or the internet is actual physical and mental activities. We played outside all day -- running and jumping and pretending we were someone else -- what today's people call LARPing.
Technology doesn't affect our personal lives so much because when the power went out last week because of the storm -- we went back to our old habits -- telling ghost stories and singing campfire songs.

We got a computer when I was 6. A Commodore 64. It wasn't very useful for anything other than database entry, and it was always with DOS commands on a black screen. I vaguely remember learning how to program it to do simple math and make colored squares. I did all of my assignments on a digital typewriter - type it out on a tiny, one-line LCD screen and hit 'print' LOL I didn't get a real computer or internet until my first year of university. We got an IBM and a modem. That sucker was blazing at 14.4kbps! LOL I can still remember the sound it made connecting.
So yeah. I basically grew up reading books, watching tv and playing outside or at my friends' houses.

Yep, everyday reading books.
Now what I do everyday is staring at my laptop doing my job hahaha..
Got my first cellphone at junior high school, then my first PC and internet connection on senior high school, got my own laptop when I entered university.
I can only text messaging and making a phone call with my first cellphone, so I think I'd fine without it.
Now my cellphone is a smartphone and I can't live without it haha, but especially since I need to keep in touch with my colleague about my job.
Internet internet.. aww now that we live in a world connected by it, I don't know how I;m going to live without it hahahahahaha

Life without computers is like Robotech, Samurai X, Transformers, Dragonballz
I did go hiking alone on the deserted hill near my house.
Then watching people play Super Mario on Nintendo.
Times has changed.
Now live without computers and internet is work, work, smartphone, class.
I just enrolled to study a course ... back to university.

Interesting this Topic started in October of 2005 so it is almost 10 years old.
Since I am a retired systems analyst I have a long history with computers. BUT I am also 71 years old which means I still remember a life without television.
I can still use a slide rule. There were no electronic calculators until I was in grad school.
Forget mp3 players my first portable radio was a vacuum tube job with a 2 pound 9 volt battery that lasted only about 40 hours!!!! (found it at a pawn shop for cheap since a new one cost about a weeks salary)

Re: Do you remember life without computers and internet?
yeah I remember that time.. AND I must say it was amazing and beautiful and more simple and slow. You could have time for anything and I had been doing many things but was able to finish and enjoy them all without stress for the time etc..
But I like internet and computers since I can watch now my favorite asian drama search things that I want to know about more and find new people or talk with my friends who are farraway from me
but still I think nowdays it's just progressing tooo fast.. I don't like smartphone technollogy and I don't like that internet is turning into something flashy messy with many stupid things on it.. I use PC still and old programs like Winamp for music and XP, and just a few years passed and that isn't supported anymore ..
I don't like fast changes especially in technollogy x.x
But still BANZAIII to Internet

Sometimes I miss those days when I had no cell phone and wasn't registered on any social networks. Nowadays when I'm planning a 3 day hike I need to write a post at first that I won't be available online these days and nobody should panic because of that. Anyway, I think that travelling somewhere far from civilization is important to me. I try to travel to various national parks and pack according to guides on this page. My next stop is Yellowstone national parkfictionalistic wrote: ↑Feb 9th, '14, 01:16 I vaguely remember doing a lot of reading by lamp-light (e-books on cell phones are saving my boring nights now!) and watching old TV shows and horror movies.
