You'all are doing really good.
Well just tossing something in here since I was a part of putting up the notion of this puppy in the air...
Static JPG 1- all blue...
Static JPG 2 - a tad bit pink in the same...
I put them in motion in a flash so they change color softly ...
You can see that here... with a include source.

make layers of the images that u want to have transitions in photoshop. save it after u make the layers, then go to file > edit in ImageReady. When the ImageReady window pops up, click on the animation and layers menus so that u can see it. if the animation menu is not shown go to window > then select animation. once the animation menu shows, click on the eye icon in the layer menu to show the image that u want to appear first and hide the images that will appear in sequence. then go to the animation menu and click on the little square icon that says "duplicates current frame". keep doing this until u get all the layers u want in it. once thats done, click play on the animation menu to see how it looks. to change the timing of the transitions, right click on the time and a list will appear and just select what u want.
this will only create a psd image so u would have to make it into a gif.
to save the animation as gif, u would have to optimize the animation. to do this, right click on the little arrow at the top of the animation menu (right under the X), select optimize animation and check both options that appear in the pop up. then go to file and save optimized as. if u get stuck somewhere just go to help and search for "Saving animations as animated GIFs".
good luck.

ok, after seeing the other entries, mine is pretty embarrassing, but i actually took some time to come up with this one.
when i created the large banner, it didn't look so bad, but when i shrunk it to match the standard size (768x480), it didn't look so hot.
oh well, here's my token entry:
