About Avatar and Signature

Postby Ruroshin » Fri Feb 03, 2006 4:11 am

I disabled uploading of avatars to the server, i didn't think it would stop showing all the currently uploaded avatars  anyway, the user base is growing quickly and the server just won't be able to continue to handle storing and displaying that many avatars so I have decided to only allow off-site avatars. All you have to do is upload your avatar to free sites like photobucket.com and link it from there in your profile.

If you don't want to view avatars or signatures then you can turn it off.
Goto Profile->Profile Settings->Reading
and adjust your settings.

Avatar and Signature sizes rules

Avatar:
  • Max resolution of 120x120px
  • animated gifs should not be larger than 200kb in filesize.

Signatures:
  • Max 4 lines of text (no wrapping)
  • Max 2 images
  • image (combined) max width of 500px
  • image (combined) max height of 175px

wrapping means the line is so long that it continues onto the next line. Basically that means it will count as 2 lines.

did you make sure in your "options" that your signature will show up with each post? if not then just put a check beside where it says: attach signature; its below the post box... where u have options for how you want your posts to be.

doesn't look like many folks read the announcements...

what i'm interested in though is the siggy width limitation...
it seems a wider sig wouldn't distort the page setup, is this for quicker page loading purposes?

oh yeah, that makes sense, huh? didn't think about that one, i hate that too when people have immensely huge avatars...
i didn't think about wider sigs doing the same to people with lower resolutions... gomen... Image

It's from IT STARTED WITH A KISS! The series stars Ariel Lin and Joe Cheung. They have such great chemistry. It's the most romantic, funniest, cutest show ever! I'm like soo obsessed with it. You have to check it out to see what i'm talking about

I think sufficient time has passed for everybody to have a chance to read this topic and adjust their sigs and avatars already. I am now enforcing it with code. If your avatar's width is too large it will be truncated when displayed. For sigs I'm being lenient for now and have made it scroll if its too long. Later on I may change it to truncating it as well. If your sigs scroll then consider changing it.

I've noticed the truncated avas. Definitely a more effective way to let people know it's resize time than anything else.

Hmm... I just noticed that the truncated avatars also leads to some truncated user names... O_o;;;
e.g. LittleGreenGrasshopper is currently LittleGreenGrashop; (half of the second "p" and onwards is chopped off)

Mozilla is not updated anymore, instead it is being continued as Seamonkey which just released 1.0 at the end of January.
I looked in Mozilla and I also see the scrollbar for wingsky but there is no scrollbar there in Seamonkey so it must be because of the old version you're using..
I did some tests and I couldn't get a scrollbar to show up in my sig in mozilla using the same text size as wingsky did, so I assume it must be because his is the first post of the thread and that maybe he didn't write a lot of text, but like I said it's all fixed in Seamonkey so you might want to update.. :thumleft:

I have noticed since the scrolling bars are now being used people are using bigger images because they know it won't take up a huge amount of space

don't worry the scrolling is just a transition period after awhile I will be clipping them altogether.

it works differently for different people. some people say they can see my banner, some can't. some can see my post count, others can't. etc.

click on your profile and the PROFILE tab.
click on PROFILE SETTINGS ... PRIVACY

if you play around with these settings, sometimes, some stats show up, and others don't. it's a real guessing game. here at d-add, we don't want your visit to be mundane! :lol

^ It says the max height for siggy is 175px. I don't know if they still enforce that though... Since anything over 175px gets a scroll bar...

I don't see anyones avatars and can't seem to get one added to my profile no matter which link I add. At least so far. The signatures show up, but no pictures are showing for anyone either. I don't know why this is happening. I liked my avatar. :-(

My signature is only words so I don't have to worry about not being able to see that at least. But none of the other features work like changing the font color, font size, or any of the other options. It just shows the info in the brackets as part of my signature.
There is a method to my madness and madness in my method.

are you sure you don't happen to have a space somewhere it doesn't belong?
the above link shows a space between [img] and the url which is why it doesn't show as the sig below here...
also, if you've uploaded your sig to an image host, use the direct link to image shown at the very bottom HERE...
hope that helps... :-)

mcjayjay, your signature is fine. Your settings are incorrect. The FAQ will explain it in further detail.

I'm trying to add to my signature and I keep getting a message that it's to long.
I've shortened it many times and It's less than 300 characters, unless I'm supposed to count spaces. Maybe its just inappropriate?

you're entitled to express your opinion in your sig file as long as it doesn't offend people. i would say that the wording you have there is stern, but not profane. (in other words, it's fine)

here's one way around it. if you make an acct at a free service like photobucket or imageshack, you could make a IMAGE file (save it as a jpg or something). then your sig file would simply contain the reference to the image:

[ img ] http:\\www.photobucket.com\oldladyfolder\warning.jpg [ /img ]

the reference would contain much less characters, but the img itself would hold all of your text.

Thanks jholic. I forgot to put a smiley face in the message above. I would never really cut someone off. As a matter of fact I don't expect anyone to stay on, that way I'm pleasantly surprised when someone does.

Avatar disappears when I sign off

Postby hiroshi » Sun Aug 01, 2010 5:15 pm

Sorry for the n00b question but I've searched for the answer but haven't been able to find it.

When I log in and look at the forum and/or post a reply, I see my avatar beside my post. When I log off and take a look at the same post as a guest, I see that my avatar is not there. But, it seems that other members who are logged off still have their avatars visible.

Has this something to do with how many posts you've made? [more posts, the privilege to keep your avatar up all the time?] ... or is it something else altogether like a setting I haven't checked?

Thanks in advance.
