Kita no kuni kara Ep9-24+SP [Eng Sub]

Postby Chuks » Sun Nov 14, 2010 6:49 pm

With xploring's permission, the previous subber for Kita no Kuni Kara, I decided to take over the project.
I’m uploading the subs for one of the SPs first, then I’ll upload the subs for the original series later on.
(I’m providing a character summary to help you understand the SP better. Just a little trivia, Kuramoto So is
the screenwriter for this series, and he wrote another drama called Yasashii Jikan. Both dramas were
set in Furano, a city located in Hokkaido, the northernmost region of Japan. )

Review

I started with the Himitsu SP because Miyazawa Rie (from the movie, The Twilight Samurai) is simply adorable
and the story is very heart-warming, so hopefully it will get people to watch the original series. Given the original series
was set in the early '80s, I’m sure not many people would be motivated to watch, as was one of them. When I was little,
I only managed to catch a few specials which included Himitsu. But it was only after watching Jidai (the SP after Himitsu)
recently, that I got really interested in watching the original series. After 30 years, the original series is still as moving
as it was back in the day. It's a good example of a classic story that never gets old.

Synopsis for Himitsu SP (By chokubi)
After returning from a 5-year stint in Tokyo, Jun begins working for Furano's refuse collection division. He meets a bubbly and
down-to-earth girl named Shu, through a fateful wall clock she disposes by mistake. They hit it off instantly and become an item.
One day, Hotaru's ex-boyfriend contacts Jun out of the blue to inform him of her recent disappearance, in which they promptly meet
up and Jun learns a side of Hotaru he had never known before. In the midst of this predicament, Jun discovers yet another secret;
the secret of Shu's past...
Character Summary For Himitsu (By chokubi)
Kuroita Goro (Tanaka Kunie)- The father of the Kuroita family is a man who lives by his strong values and his two sturdy hands.
After a decision to leave his wife behind in Tokyo, Goro returns to his hometown in Furano where he has since overcome countless hardships while bringing up his two children. A recent accident during the construction of his third home leaves him with a limp, but it doesn't stop him from completing it or living his austere life.

Kuroita Jun (Yoshioka Hidetaka)- As the main narrator of this series, Jun relates not only important accounts of the story but
also the challenges he faces while growing up. The circumstances surrounding his mother's separation leaves him struggling
at times to come to terms with his reality. And in finding a sense of belonging, he makes several trips to Tokyo throughout his youth. Only to call it quits at 22, where he returns to Furano and resumes his life there.

Kuroita Hotaru (Nakajima Tomoko)- Jun's younger sister. Unlike her brother, Hotaru remains levelheaded about her mother's
incident and is quick to adapt to changes, while being a supportive sibling and daughter. Upon graduation from middle school,
she enrolls into a nursing school, in which she rediscovers herself and begins pursing her own way of life. The results not only pull her away from her family members but also leaves them shocked at her recent decisions.

Osato Rei (Yokoyama Megumi)- Jun's childhood sweetheart. Both of them find themselves in a long distance relationship after
Rei moves to Sapporo. They gradually drift apart over the years.

Kasamatsu Shokichi (Nakazawa Yoshihito)- Jun's childhood friend. After a series of events involving their own family members,
they become best of friends and roommates.

Wakui Yuji(Ogata Naoto)- Hotaru's first love. They started dating when they were pursuing their tertiary education. But broke up
after choosing their respective career paths.

Kitamura Sota(Iwaki Koichi)- Jun's distant cousin. An ex-boxer who has helped the Kuroitas on countless occasions. He now works at his father's cattle farm.

Nakahata Kazuo(Chii Takeko)- Goro's former classmate. A drinking buddy who has helped Goro with various issues including employment. He manages his own lumbering company.
Thank you Chuks I will begin to seed the SP now - part 1 and 2. :)
When the subs for the next episode/SP are posted I will stop seeding this SP and begin seeding the episode/sp that has been subbed and so on.
Until that I later on will make batches of the episodes of the drama.

Thanks for picking up this project Chuks.

Is there any chronological order for the specials? Would starting from 1995 spoils the sequence of the story?

I love watching those "old" dramas. :)

You're welcome. :)

Whether watching the special first or not is up to you.
Like I posted on the first post, I will sub the original series after this special.
The subs for the original series are released up to ep08 already, so you can watch
them instead of the special while you wait for the further episodes.
I started from this one because that's how many younger Japanese got into this drama.
People who are not too keen on watching 80s drama can decide if they will give the
original series try with this special.

Chuks, どうもありがとうございます!

By pure chance, my wife has suddenly decided that she needs to watch this whole series which she loved as a child. So now we are watching it together, and I am so grateful that you are working on the subs. We are up to episode 7 so far, so we're really looking forward to the fruits of your labors. The alternative is, I understand about 10% of the dialogue and then pause every few minutes for her explanation. Especially this Hokkaido-ben, some of it I've never heard before.

大変でしょうね、Chuksさん。お疲れ様です。

どういたしまして。
I'm glad to hear you and your wife are enjoying it. :)

As you said, this drama is trying to very true to people who live in farms of Hokkaido,
they have strong Hokkaido-ben. (Not so much in specials though)
I could guess most of them but I had to look up some of them.
Like, Henamazurui (cunning), is apparently not so common anymore in Hokkaido,
but you hear that a lot in Kita no kuni kara.

I should be able to release the subs for second half of Himitsu in a couple of days, and
after that I'll release the ones for the original series.
I already created subtitles for ep09 to 11, and I'm waiting for the editor to check them.
I hope I won't make you wait too long.

I have a question. In the topic of this thread you have written of 23 episodes, but isn't the drama 24 episodes?

Wonderful drama ... Been enjoying every single episode. Wouldn't be possible without your great subs.

BTW, any plan to sub for the SP 1983 Furyu onwards? There are 8 SP starting from 1983 till 2002. It will be great if the sub can be done so we can follow the story line after the main drama is completed.

Very much appreciative of your efforts, Chuks.

Thanks so much for subbing this! I ran out of jdrama to watch so I decided to give this a try. What a nice surprise it turned out to be. It is a wonderfully touching series and portrays raw emotions in a way you don't normally see in more modern dramas. I'm about to watch episode 12 and look forward to your future releases.

Thanks, Chuks bec. of this thread and your (and past subbers') hard work I got to know this drama.
I love it. I decided to not yet watch the SP94, for I prefer to watch this on a chronological order since it would be more meaningful to see the kids grow up or get older through the years.

I enjoyed Ep 13. It's springtime...
and we get to finally meet Keiko-chan. My heart goes out to Jun who has to make painful and mature decisions at such a young age.
Looking forward to ep14. Arigato!

Thanks for Ep. 17!

17 of 24, you're nearing the end of a long marathon, stay hydrated, keep your energy level high and never say "can't".

Thanks again for your effort on a long series..... keep up the excellent work.

kanji45,

I'm actually enjoying this marathon a lot and hoping it won't end.
It's so fun to sub this series!
Thanks for your cheer though. :)

For all,

I've uploaded the subs for ep18.
This is a fun episode and it shows producers' love to the land and residents.
That's what makes this drama genuine and heart-warming, and that's why
it still touches people's hearts after 30 years.

Enjoy!

Thanks Chuks!!!

Eps 20! ... just 4 more!

I'm on the sidelines cheering you on, CHUKS! ..... cuz, I'm the type of person willing to wait for a completed series before watching it and was extremely happy to read your own words of encouragement.
