Ashi Girl [Eng Subs] (Ep 08 of 12)

Postby Grrrcat » Sun Oct 01, 2017 5:41 am

Ashi Girl

Original Work: Manga Ashi Girl by Morimoto Kozueko

Genre: Period/Historical, Sci-fi

Main Cast: Kuroshima Yuina, Kentaro, Matsushita Yuya, Tomosaka Rie, Kawaei Rina

Synopsis Hayakawa Yui is a 16-year-old female high school student who is light on her feet. She happens to travel through time to the Warring States period and encounters a young lord whom she falls in love with at first sight. To protect him, she decides to become an "ashigaru," meaning foot soldier in Japanese, and runs through battle fields.

Historical Notes:

Sengoku: Sengoku is the era of time in Japan before it was unified, when it was made up of a bunch of different small states run by daimyo (castle lords) that were constantly fighting with each other so they could increase the size of their domain. It can be considered one of the most brutal and bloody periods of Japan's history.

Eiroku/Heisei: Japan's traditional calendar is based on the emperor of the time. Every time a new emperor takes the throne, a new era starts. So Eiroku Year 2 (1559) refers to the second year of Ogimachi-tenno's reign, and Heisei Year 29 (2017) refers to the 29th year of Emperor Akihito's reign. This system is still used today mostly for official and formal documents.

Ashigaru: Foot soldiers, the grunts of an army that were employed as unskilled mercenaries solely for the sake of increasing a daimyo's army's numbers. They were mostly poor peasants and were the lowest rank in the army. All other higher ranked soldiers and general fought on horseback, but ashigaru were the only ones that did all the dirty work fighting on the ground, normally with minimal armor or weapons. This drama/manga's name, pronounced ashi gaaru , is a pun on ashigaru.

Seppuku: A form of ritual suicide by stabbing yourself in the stomach and slicing your abdomen open. It was most commonly used as a way for samurai/soldiers to restore their honor after committing a shameful act such as losing a battle.

Battle of Okehazama: A famous battle in 1560 that helped set the stage for unification of Japan. Oda Nobunaga defeated Imagawa Yoshimoto's army of 25,000 men with his army of only 3,000, thereby establishing himself as one of the 3 front-runner warlords who would go on to conquer and unite all of Japan (Nobunaga, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Hideyoshi Toyotomi).

Translation Notes:

* Wakagimi's name is not Wakagimi. "Wakagimi" is a title that indicates he is the heir of the castle lord and roughly translates to "young lord." I decided to leave it untranslated because this is probably how he will be referred to 90% of the time instead of his name, Tadakiyo, as a sign of respect for his position. Also, I just personally think "young lord-sama" looks ridiculous and it sounds much better to say, "Yui and Wakagimi are so cute!" rather than "Yui and Young Lord are so cute!"

* Anytime Yui is called "kid" in the Sengoku era, it is implied that they are saying "kid boy." There is no good English translation of the word 小僧 (kozou) but it means something like calling someone a kid, except it's only used for males. "Lad" or "Young chap" are somewhat similar to it but lack the derogatory "you're just a child" connotation that "kozou" and "kid" can have, and just using "boy" as in "Be quiet, boy!" sometimes sounds a little too demeaning in my opinion, especially when Wakagimi says it to her.

* This is a historical drama so everyone in the Sengoku period talks different than people in the modern era. I figured if I made everyone speak in old Shakespearean English it might be overkill, so please just imagine that people in the Sengoku era talk like they are in medieval times or something.

Raws:
Raws can be found at jdramacity as they become available.

EDIT: Due to the closing of jdramacity, raws from episode 5 onwards will be from DoA or nyaa.si. The sub file should work regardless of what raw you use.

I hope you all enjoy this show with me!

Check your inbox for the raw file for episode 1. Don't worry, it's clean of any hardsubs. There might be a noticeable minor glitch or two, but it's pretty decent quality overall. I hope you enjoy the episode~

Thank you for the heads up about that! I didn't think jdramacity would pick this show up. As long as they are available, I'll use the jdramacity raws. I just updated the link on the initial post and replaced the old subs with the new jdramacity retimed version of the subs.

Note: I found a pretty important translation error while I was retiming the subs. I mixed up Hagi and Koyama in the history lecture in the beginning. The line should say:

In the year 1559 Eiroku Year 2, the lord of Kuroha Castle, Hagi Tadataka, was attacked by the neighboring territory, Koyama, his castle was set aflame, and both his castle and clan subsequently perished in the flames.

I'm sorry for all the edits and confusion!

Episode 2 is up!

Here's a couple little notes in case anyone might be confused about the titles:

- Hagi Tadakata is technically a daimyo which basically means that he's an extremely rich and powerful noble feudal lord that lives in a castle and rules over a large amount of land. The only person in Japan with more power than a daimyo is the shogun, who is chosen from among the daimyo. So the Sengoku era is basically like a constant Battle Royale among the daimyos to determine who gets to be the next ultimate ruler of Japan. To make things easier, I'm going to refer to daimyos as "Castle Lords" and address them as "His Lordship."

- Please forgive me for calling Ako, "Princess Ako." I know the daughter of a Lord isn't a princess but I thought she might need a special title to distinguish her from other daughters so I left it as princess. And to be clear, Ako is the daughter of another daimyo (Matsumaru).

- Think of a "small feudal lord" as being like the mayor of a town. They may be the top person in that town but their power is nothing when compared to the daimyo and their job is basically just to enforce whatever the daimyo says they should do.

I hope you enjoy the episode! Check back next weekend for Episode 3!

So sorry about the delay! Episode 3 is now up! I wanted to release it days ago but I was just too busy to work on it last week. I'm going to try to get back on schedule with episode 4.

Quick notes:

1. I'm assuming the Nogami people are like a nomadic tribe that kind of does its own thing as long as everyone else leaves them alone. The actual translation of how they refer to them is "Nogami mass of people."

2. Ashigaru have ranks themselves. The higher-ranked ashigaru get to use weapons and have better armor but the lowest-ranked one's can't use weapons. They tend to be things like flag-bearers and such.

Hope you enjoy episode 3! Episode 4 starts the cute in earnest!

Hello,

You said: "Anytime Yui is called "kid" in the Sengoku era, it is implied that they are saying "kid boy." There is no good English translation of the word 小僧 (kozou) but it means something like calling someone a kid, except it's only used for males. "Lad" or "Young chap" are somewhat similar to it but lack the derogatory "you're just a child" connotation that "kozou" and "kid" can have, and just using "boy" as in "Be quiet, boy!" sometimes sounds a little too demeaning in my opinion, especially when Wakagimi says it to her."

You're right, there is no good translation ... with all the connotations meant in Japanese but, Kiddo would be slang for a somewhat naive teenager to early twenties that is not quite a mature adult yet ... Although that is an asexual term that can apply to both sexes. Where as, Kid in English has as you said more of a, "Be quiet, boy!" feel to it.

And by the bye, thanks for subbing this I'm enjoying it. I dislike films that get too much into the technical aspects of time travel and loose the "people-ness" of it all. if you get what I mean. In this drama they just wiz by the tech mess and get to the period stuff and they're doing pretty good. Of course I don't speak Japanese let alone what amounts to medieval Japanese. I was thinking 1560s I'm hoping the Invincible Oda Nobunaga will make his appearance soon. If I'm not mistaken he was alive in that time frame. Isn't he to the Japanese what George Washington to the US? Well Him, General Hideyoshi Toyama and General Tokugawa Ieyasu who was declared Shogun following the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Yes I'm a history buff. Sort of the founding fathers of the Tokugawa shogunate which ruled Japan for nearly 300 years. Sorry if I get "historical" but that to me is what makes these shows great ... That is, when a writer and director can successfully weave fiction into actual events. Just like what Watsuki, Nobuhiro did with his manga and films Rurouni Kenshin ... Weave a single fictional character into what the Koga Ninja actuallly or rather allegedly did? I love it!

Thanks
D

Episode 4 is up~

I'm so so sorry for the delay! Work has me swamped lately and for some reason this episode in particular was a beast for me to translate. There were just a lot of phrases/words that didn't have a good English translation. Despite that, I actually really liked this episode (even though my favorite episode is yet to come :P ) so I hope you all enjoy it, too!

Translation Notes:
- Ayame is a male, but I believe he is part of a Noh theatre troupe. In Noh theatre woman roles were traditionally played by pretty men and being an actor of one of these troupes was considered a very honorable and respectable position. I believe that Yui's accusation of him being male was considered by him to be an insult to his acting skills so that's why he got upset by it, not to mention she was implying he was a lowly prostitute.

- In case it wasn't clear, when Wakagimi asks her to sing a song, he's essentially asking her to recite a poem. Really the only kinds of songs sung during this time were Chinese Classics (basically musically recited poems), singing an upbeat "pop song" was unheard of.

- Gramps is just supposed to be an affectionate nickname for Amano-sama that everyone in the Amano family and Wakagimi and his father call him. I kind of regret translating it now that Wakagimi's father calls him that too...

- You may notice that Yui sometimes tries to imitate the Sengoku way of speaking. For instance, she says "washi" instead of "watashi" for "I" sometimes. She does it pretty often when she's nervous (such as when talking to Wakagimi) and the funny thing is she often makes mistakes with it. For example, when she was dressed as Fuku, she mistakenly used a version of "i" that's only used by samurai. No one in the show has mentioned anything about her slip-ups yet so I haven't bothered to point them out, but just know that she's not very good at the Sengoku accent :lol

- When Wakagimi says "good point" it's because he cut Yui off and I believe he mistakenly assumed that Yui was going to say she didn't like trendy songs or thought they were inappropriate, when she was really trying to say she didn't know them.

Thank you for all the kind comments and patience!
