Chuushingura no Koi [Eng Subs] (ep1-17 of 20)

Postby nuve » Fri Nov 18, 2016 11:54 pm

ep 1: First Love
Isogai Jurouzaemon https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/礒貝正久 I couldn't find anything about him in eng. so at least this link. He was born as Isogai Masahisa and at the age of fourteen he started to serve in Asano family. After his lord killed himself, he was one who wanted to avenge him as soon as possible. Moreover, he was an excellent drum and Noh-player, but because Asano didn't like the art, he stopped it. Though, it was said, that he secretely continued with playing at koto, aeven before his death.
- with this, Asanosuke is back ...
Koishikawa Muryo Temple is probably this one - http://www.visiting-japan.com/en/articl ... enzuin.htm (or https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/伝通院 ) . 'muryo' means 'immeasurable'
Ushi Tenjin is this one - http://tokyosnapphoto.blogspot.sk/2011/ ... enjin.html . it's near to Muryo Temple (in the same ward)
'sobayonin' is someone who is chamberlain, acting as intermediator between shogun and his councilors , or when working for daimyo, he is in charge of general management and housekeeping in samurai/daimyo family. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/側用人
ep 2: Engagement
"Well, I've chosen light-green. With the wavy lines." she means a kimono with pattern of two curves, that symbolize a water or stream that is rising up. It may be in form of chrysanthenum, pine, clouds, etc. http://www.kimonoclub.info/2006/08/post_106.html (jpn)

"Bring me please the light-green 'uchikake' kimono. " uchikake kimono is formal type of kimono worn often at marriage https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimono#Uchikake or in jpn. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/打掛

" he has departed the Shinagawa inn at around five. " Shinegawa Inn was the last inn at the Tokaido road to Edo from south, currently it's part of Tokyo, almost in the middle. http://www.us-japan.org/edomatsu/shina1/frame.html
note: the verb in this line may have two meaning 'to stay in (a inn)' or 'to depart (the inn)' I chose depart, since in next scene it is told they were passing another place already

"Inner manager Ochiai Yozaemon" - I'm not sure whether I've got his position right or not. I couldn't find any reference for that word. however, he was the one who stayed with Aguri even after Asano's suicide, so I assume, he is the manager of the residence in Edo

"Right now, we've got the news that they passed Zojoji temple in Shiba." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zōjō-ji

"It is sugar candy. " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konpeitō - because of sugar, it was very rare and expensive, hence the reaction of Asano when he got to know, what is it

"On the next day of ox, I think .. " the 'day of ox' is 'MidsummerDay' sometimes around end of July, mostly associated with eating of eel. https://teikokublog.com/2014/08/08/eati ... shi-no-hi/
http://www.city.shinjuku.lg.jp/foreign/ ... 107_3.html

"Yuinen Temple, Rinshouken" - I'm not sure with the name, so I don't know, which temple they mean. or whether is it really temple, or what. I couldn't find any reference for this one

"Fuwa Kazuemon, who provoked Zenzaemon, is his old friend." he says that Fuwa is 'ako irai no tomo', whereas the 'ako' is written with the same kanji as the name of the domain they are coming from. and 'irai' is written as 'since'. I have problem to understand this one correct. to me, it sounds as 'Fuwa is a friend of .. ' someone, that 'may come from Ako' or 'from the times in Ako'. that's why I used 'old friend'.

"Husband and wife, they are somehow surprising .. " - in meaning that she was forced to marry someone she probably didn't want to, but in the end it was unexpectedly a good thing, or it turned surprisingly quite well. so 'being a married couple is beyond expectattion'

"When they watch you, you shouldn't show them your worries." - last one, I'm not sure about. I don't know, whether she means that 'she is watching Kiyo' or the people in generall in residence. literal meaning is like 'when watching you, don't be/become with worry/concern' .
ep. 3: Scheme (or Maneuver if we were in army)
Hijikata, lord of Komono castle in Ise - Komono castle in Ise - Komono domain in Ise province, now Mie prefecture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Komono_Domain

05:12 - basically he asks him politely if he agrees to order special customized goods for Daigaku's wedding as gifts.

20:27 - lit. The first sunrise on New Year was damaged with solar eclipse

22:52 - 'kouke' lit: high family/house. It was the official post for etiquette ceremony for shogun. The one who held this post was responsible for visit various shrines and was an advisor for the daimyos that prepared the feast/welcome for imperial messengers or any others guest sent by shogun. Imperial messengers were person sent from Kyoto from current and previous shogun. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/高家_(江戸時代)

24:10 - Yasui was Asano's vassal appointed in Edo. He survived the attack, because he didn't participate at it - didn't want to.

27:27 - he says that after all is done, then lord will gladly listen tho him.

28:05 - somehow complicated, and I'm not sure whether I exactly got the words ritgh, but he says something as 'token of our motive/intention'. he gives him gifts for better cooperation. the verb at end 'oosameru' means 'finish' or 'bring to close'
words used by giving things http://www.wajyutu.com/?%C2%A3%A1%C3%A4%C9%A4%A6%A4%BE

29:31 - used aspiration, but I think better would be effort or belief.

30:15 - 'imperial residence' - 'densou yashiki' - a palace built for guests of shogun, when they were staying in Edo.
ep4 . [Incident]
just some notes:
"Lord is in the residence of ukyonodaibu, master Tamura? " Asano was placed in residence of Tamura Tatsuaki. His rank according to ritsuryo system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritsuryō) was "junior fifth rank lower" and title 'ukyonodaibu'

".. risked his life and finished what he'd started, right? " I'm not exactly sure with this. I think she expected that Kira was dead after that attack. because he offended Asano, so must have died (as revenge)

"Afternoon, between 2 and 3 PM, an urgent report was sent to Ako." the time is said in old form, using the 12 zodiac system, divided in six day-times and six night-times https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_clock . time said in this line is 8th day-time (goat). each of the hour in this system can be compared to 2 hours in current time. (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/十二時辰 )

"He will be buried at temple Sengaku." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sengaku-ji

"Therefore, if I'm not mistaken .. " it's just a hint to Kiyo, that because both of them were Asano's favourite, then they would probably die with him, as it is expected of vassals that are close to his lord.

"This incident, .. " I took the official saying for Asano's will. His words "この段,かねて知らせ申すべく候えども今日やむをえざる事に候ゆえ知らせ申さず候不審に存ずべく候" are explained with this meaning "I should have told you my motive of that incident, I know you are getting suspicious" . I just fit the meaning in timing.
Btw, it is said, that those aren't his own words, that his testament was changed after his death by Tamura, because even in original it looks as it was cut in midde, or some parts are missing. The whole sentence/testament sounds very mysterious.
So no one know exactly, whether this saying is his own or not.

"More than the cherry blossom inviting a wind to blow them away, I am wondering what to do with the remaining springtime." Asano's death poem. I'm not good with this, I took this one from wiki.
Ep 5 Vow
".. will move to residence of her parent in Akasaka Imai." Akasaka is place in Tokyo, Minato. after Asano's death , Aguri was "placed" there.
".. they untied their hair like this" she used word "motodori - 髻" which is used for "place whee the hair is gathered and pinned at top of head" they didn't cut their hair or such, just changed the hairstyle to corresponde with the decision they did. that's why I used 'untie'
There's writing on grave stone at 09:56.79 which actually shows all the name that Asano got in his life/after life. I can't decipher the first kanji, so I'm not sure what exactly first 5 kanji means (could get only the four 伽羅婆阿 and found nothing what that might have meant). the rest kanjis are Asano's names, approximately as:
"冷光院" Reikouin
"殿前少" Denzenshou
"府朝散" Fuchousan
"大夫吹毛" Daibusuimo
"玄利大" Genridai
"居士" as posthumous suffix
"供養塔" as 'memorial tower'
ep 6 [Resolution] rushed a little with this one, but I hope there aren't too many mistakes
03:05 "corpse of our lord was confirmed after suicide." .. they actually confirmed that he is really dead. They did it in order to prevent the fact that some samurai were making profit of fictitious suicides (the plot of this movie actually)
09:08 .. I can't get the kanji's of Horibe's allias
11:20 "He went exactly with that wish in his mind." she sent him off with the belief he won't come back, because that was exactly what was expected of warrior
12:06 ".. asking for getting a leader when dying." so even if the "old samurai' die, the clan won't be ruined, because they hoped that DAigaku would take over the clan
18:16 "and Muramatsu Kihei at magistrate with stipend" 'magistrate with stipend' is a post, I assume it was somehow supported by shogunate. so the people in had not too high income from this one.
ep 7 [Newly wed]
01:13 ".. there's hidden meaning hereafter."
I assume that was the hint from Ooishi that he is actually planing something (or just being cautious because of Daigaku)

02:39 "Liter and half for forty mon. Deciliter and half for four mon."
'sho' 升 in first sentence means around 1.8 litres
'gou' 合 in second sentence is one tenth of that, so around 0.18 litres.
he is complaining about the price, because it is expensive (or it should be, because one bowl of soba was around 10-15 mon)
Kiyo in next line says that is hast to be expensive, since it is product from Kyoto (as place with the most brewing manufactures)

02:46 "It's more expensive than kilogram and half of rice."
she uses 'sho' as well, but I localized it with 'kilogram'. (one liter is around one kilogram)

02:55 " ..have today opened liquor store in Gensuke-cho, Shiba."
Shiba is part of Tokyo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiba,_Minato,_Tokyo

09:18 "Please, take this and go to buy eggs,\N konjac jelly and great burdock. "
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konjac

09:53 ".. must have been impressed by master Ooishi's ability."
by his ability to persuade all of them to no resist

10:29 "The assistant in Takadanobaba's fight is crying."
Takadanobaba is the place where Yasubei fought a battle and was one of the best fighters. with this fight he got the interest of Yahei, who later made a offer to him to marry in his family. and he introduced Yasubei to Asano's lord.
so, it means, that now the men with/agianst he fought before must now cry because of him (because he agreed with Ako's capitulaton)

14:26 "To Honjo. "
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/本所_(墨田区)
https://www.google.sk/maps/place/Honjo, ... 139.797467

14:30 "Toward Azumabashi?"
Ookawa is its old name
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumida,_Tokyo
https://www.google.sk/maps/place/Azumab ... 39.8028245

14:51 "And Kira will be not guarded. "
he says that "Kira will show a gap"

15:03 "That's the plan we promised to do together."
"when we close pact together , that was our plan"

24:14 "{Mori}It's been a while."
I don't know if they knew each other before or not

25:14 "We don't have to stay here. "
as 'we don't have to stay here and talk at this place when there is better place to go/be"
ep 8 [Two men]
I know, I didn't a prefect job when translating Juuroza at the end, when he gets angry at Kiyo for not saying that she was tailed. All that was somehow difficult for me to translate, so it may not be exactly accurate to what he is saying.

19:09 "No, even the kitchen ... " - 'doma' means 'dirt floor'. in old times it was the place in house, where you prepared everything from cooking to doing all the work as merchant or farmars (whether the family was). Sandayuu means that he will accept any place in the house, no matter how bad it would be, just to stay in that house.

25:15 ".. was born under difficult fate. " - she uses the word for 'strong'or 'firm'

30:50 "Be happy. " as in "I wish you to life long , happy and health life"

30:57 "Wish you luck. " she uses the word for 'fortune in war' so she wishes him to achieve their goal
ep 9 [Border of life and death]
26:10 "So, when will we go to Edo?" - I know, this doesn't make sense,b ecause they are in Edo (or I think so), but she uses 'miyakodori'. 'miyakodori' itself means 'gull/oysterchater' . a gull is bird state of Tokyo http://www.metro.tokyo.jp/ENGLISH/ABOUT ... ndix07.htm . but still, I'm not exactly sure with her line

28:10 "I will work in Uesugi's residence in Shirokane where the lady is living." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirokane

32:26 "Right now, we can't allow to be in public gaze, that's why I'd like you to play." - second part I'm not exactly sure of
ep. 10 [Spy]
generally, uesugi's weren't happy to be related to the incident, therefore, even if they guarded Kira, they did it only because inner politics (they got his son as their heir. they had lost some land because they weren't able to manage such big area, I think because of financial problems). so Tomiko is angry because Kira's family (and she was part of Kira's family when married) helped them, so she was expected some respect.
I stil think that I didn't handle this part well, so .. yeah, it looks somehow stiff.
11:43 Hikawa shrine -http://www.visiting-japan.com/en/articles/tokyo/e13mn-akasaka-hikawa.htm
22:36 He's head of Uesugi family, \Ncounsel of Imperial Investigating Office, lord Tsunanori. - Imperial Prosecuting and Investigating Office (under the ritsuryo system) - the main duties was inspection by the central administration and the crime in capital (Kyoto). It was established as an independent institution, however, that wasn't always kept. They weren't authorized to directly arrest and judge even if they found something wrong.
ep 11. [Kira's face]
00:42.22: "At the day when the raid was set for 5 December, .." - what I meant was that Ako roning set the date of raid on 5th December. And this decision was made in November, exactlty at the same day when Kira came to Shirokane to visit/meet his family.

03:40.10: "We've haven't met yet." - it's as in 'this is the first time we meet' but can't it say better

04:03.52: "You are like messenger from heaven to me." - she says that 'she is the girl that god has sent to them'

06:14.94: "I guess, he is worrying about himself." - I'm not sure with this discussion between Uesugi's vassals. I think that they speak about the decision to stay in Shirokane, and not going back to Honjo. So, like Kira is making many excusess that he can stay in Shirokane and be under better protection, because it's Uesugi's residence. So of course, there would be Uesugi's retainers as well for to protect him. And those vassals are ironically speaking about how good it is, they don't have to go away and maybe Kira hs started be more afraid now. Basically being rude to him, because of his fear.

14:33.48: 'Is the society .." - in meaning that when someone wanted something from him, then no one has problem with it, but now, all of them are ignoring him, or not helping him. People will change when they don't see any benefit, like now, when he retired and has no power (theoretically), and even is targeted by someone. The whole world doesn't care about him, or won't help him.

20:51.60: "No matter what happens, it won't be odd." - as 'they may die anytime'

21:16.62: "It would be good, .. " - this is pointed to Uesugi's vassals, because they actually don't care about him. And he would expect a little help/protection when being old (if for not anything else). They forced him to go back to Honjo, where he doesn't have too many men to preotect him.

21:41.78 : "Women from Kira's family can't be distracted." - ehm, this may be weird, but can't say it better. something in meaning that the women of Kira's clan are strong enough to not do anything stupid.

25:08.26: "Even if they accomplish their will, \Nthey won't achieve anything." - as, killing Kira won't help them (to live)

25:22.08: "After that, .. " - I"m not sure with this Senkeini's sentence. Seems that she pointed out, that after retainers do anything, they will die. and they may not die in a good way (aka, they may not be able to kill themselves as is expected of samurai). Or shogunate may not consider their acion worthy of samurai's doing, so they may end with bad end.

26:46.28: 'We should not be worried about that." - I think that this is meant as reply to the past part. They should not be worried about the past,b ecause right now, Kiyo is sacrificing her life when she supports Ako's ronins.
ep 12 Morning of the raid (and with this one, we are back to beginning (see ep 1))
so first, I'm not quite good with japanese poems and lyric and such, so Horibe's sentence about comparing stopped snowfall with a new morning may be not perfect, but I couldn't think about anything better. the same goes for Mori's letter. I just use free version, because he wrote it in formal speach, but the idea should be the same. he purposely accused himself, that he looks like he is going to withdraw on the last second before attack. So the others have no regrets/blame, that he is dead, or hhe has sacrificied himslef.

03:24 He is carrying two swords. about daisho: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daishō

03:26 And his short sword .. and about the short sword (actually more like dagger) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tantō

07:05 How beautiful .. the word, she uses, has meaning like "you match each other"

12:04 .. all of them will achieve our wish. the word, she uses here, means '"long awaited desire" but that's too long. so I either used 'wish' or just 'desire' . it refers to the revenge they want to do

13:09 The blood of me, who can't be real samurai, .. because he didn't oficially served to the lord (plus his father gave up the title of samurai)

14:34 It's green bamboo for my important statement. as in meaning that he shows it in fight

16:42 .. for your luck. 'goun' . this one is used often. it means 'fortune in war' . since they use it for wishing luck or having luck or getting good result, I translated it freely in each situation, what I thought would be the best

18:57 You are the one to say. meaning "I don't want this to be said by you" like 'I don't want to hear that from you' again, depends on context

21:43 Not worth to pursue someone who run away. it's an idiom, lit; don't chase things that leave (on their own)

23:47 Come. Drink. + 23:52 Come on! for common people, it was a great honor to drink with samurai not to say with chief of all of them. and both of them weren't oficially samurais, that's why the surprise

25:48 Good luck .. + 25:50 .. and to live on. he says "for many years(=forever) healthy"
ep 13 [Snow of farewell] let's go back to beginning (ep 1).
ep 14 [Letters from plum]
04:38 .. from temple Gohyakurakan in Honjo? https://taiken.co/single/gohyaku-rakanji

04:57 However, the relation between Uesugi and shogun is very deeply. - meaning that Uesugi may strongly oppose to any proposal from Asano and so influece/manipulate shogun

07:44 By all means, I wanted to tell everyone about statements of vassals and give letters, .. - he means that statement they made before and after the raid. so that the raid woudln't be considered as mere murder, but as revenge of warriors.

16:20 I think that right now .. - this speech is about the opinion, that they can be saved despite all the things they did. at that time, it was not allowed to kill someone else. that may sound weird, but there was a law that forbad revenge-fights because too many were involved. so Asano's vassal risked more, because, if they had been discovered before the raid, that they had plannded something like that, they would have been killed right away. of course, in the end, they died, however, the way how it was done, was the one who placedd them (and the act they did) at the same level as dying/killing in battle, which was of course considered as the best way to die.
so here, after the raid, the law said that they should have been punished like mere murderer, however, because of public opinion (mostly, because shogunate before evidently sided with Kira, and ordered only Naganori to kill himself) and that shogun considered the way Asano's vassals "revenged" their lord as acceptable, there was a little chance, they could be pardoned and even might survived.
but of course , they'd searched for a way to punish them and forgive them at the same time, therefore commiting seppuku was the only way (in the point of view at that time)
ep 15 [New way]
01:19 The season of young leaves .. - it means time from spring to middle of summer

05:51 .. has died that day with others. - it's like, his ideals, thoughts, faith died together with those who commited seppuku, because that was practically the end of Asano family (in the way he knew it)

06:02 I'd like to have family where can I live .. - lit. he says something like 'having household that will fit his own body'

06:12 Kenkaemon! - as at beginning said, it was the name they gave him because of his violent way of living (kenka - fighthing).

08:04 .. be sent to Ooshima. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izu_Ōshima

09:46 Genroku, year 16 (1703), 4th month, 28 day\NReiganjima, guard house in port https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chūō,_Tokyo

15:11 An obliging person is exactly as retired person. - meaning she talked to him and was really annoying

16:22.. lord Tsunatoyoko, his nephew and lord of Kofu domain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kōfu Kofu domain was domain where Tokugawa's originally ruled. so like family domain

16:37.. to serve lord Tsunatoyoko in Sakurada Goten? - sakurada goten was place where were daimyo's palaces in Edo castle. most of them were by sakurada gate, hence the name. Goten means 'court'

16:58 You will temporary leave your home, be adopted by an appropriate samurai family and from there you'll go into service. - that was common in shogunate, that people were formally adopted by someone from higher rank/family in higher position, in order to get better place/be able to marry with someone, etc. usually, if head of family knew someone perspective, who might provide him good service in future, but had lower rank, or was from lower family, then they adopted him/her in order to "open the door" for him. Usually, girls/boys of common people were adopted by soemone in higher rank, it doesn't have to be a lord/daimyo necessary, it was enough if the person who adopted a child had higher rank as the person who gave the child to adoption. girls/boys of daimyos were adopted by shogun. family who adopted the child took all the "cost", preparations, etc. needed for getting the goal (like marrying or getting rank in army, etc.) for which was this adpotion done.

19:26.. stop going against this trend. - she doesn't have goal for her life and feels to be lost. so she'd rather do something, than stay like this.

29:01 Sailing over .. those are the words from Takasago , a play about loving couple https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takasago_(play)}
ep 16 [Concubine candidates] kanji for Kiyo's name has changed. she is now officially in higher rank as she was before,. I address all the girls in court as 'lady' , even when they are concubines. That goes for Kiyo as weill, unless she is address by someone not from court.
01:20 She is your instructor, lady Ejima. i will call her 'lady' , if someone else than Kawasama address her, however, her rank is more as ' court lady/maid who serves in palace' , so she is in different position as the girls who are concubines

01:27 .. to everything Ejima teaches you about. lit. all the manners in court

01:39 .. I will try to serve here. not exactly what she says but can't say it better. she says it as 'will serve carefully'

01:55 .. everything, from greetings to wearing the clothes. 'susosabaki' may be used as 'way of handlig/wearing kimono/skirt'. so basicaly, she must teach her everything from A to Z

02:55 We'll start with "The Tales of Ise". Tales of Ise is collection of poetry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tales_of_Ise

04:56 Do you like it? We can do it together. of couse, speaks Kon, however, she's looking at cat, so I've left it in this way. (lit. that's good, isn't it? hhow about doing it together)

08:18 I couldn't say anything at all. in meaning ' I coldn't say yes or no'

11:13 She is still not perfect in many ways, however, it looks very promising for fulfilling lord's wishes. in meaning 'it's enough if she fulfills lord's desirees' because they just want to use her

14:15 Having a face like defying any touch. hard to translate, it's like 'throwing down a revenge like challenge'. like, she is full of resistence

19:59 I'd read every book one after another. lit 'read all books, greedly devoured'

20:45.. I returned without anything done. lit' she was sent back like that'

21:11 It seems that lord likes you very much. or 'very devoted/fond of to you'

22:26 And since he has bigger right to the throne as Tsunayoshi, .. at the end of Tsunayoshi's name she says a term used for 'ruler' or 'monarch', but i didn't translate it. line is long enough, even without that.

24:56 .. embrace me. used this one, but it's in meaning 'sleep with me'

26:27 ... did you fall in love with? more in meaning ' the one you fall in love before'

29:19 .. make any mistake with lord lit 'in lord's bedroom'

30:26 Everyone is desperately trying to help Okiyo .. not exactly 'help', more like 'fit to Kiyo' .Kiyo is now the favorite, so any other girl doesn't have a chance . that's why is Kon complaining.
ep 17 [Inner palace of Edo castle] notes later.
just one thing, i think that in previous scripts I wrote shogun's name as Tsunatoyoko, however, that 'ko' at the end is his title, roughly said 'prince'. His name is Tsunatoyo.

I probably will correct the subs, if I, after watching more eps, find out, that there is something wrong.

Thank you. The subtitles should also sync to 720p-DoA. You only need to rename the subtitles.

I know, they speak too politely, and it's full of historic character.
But still, I want to try to do it, because it is interesting drama

that said, ep. 2

Every time you post a new episode I put my fist up in the air and scream "YES YES YES EPISODE #!" LOL Thank you for subbing this one I know it's probably rough and takes a ton of time but it's such a visually appealing drama with a great story line.

YASSS EPISODE 6 WOOT WOOT! Thanks so much for this. I realize you are subbing other cool projects so VERY HAPPY to see this. Keep em coming whenever you have the time. I know it's a huge project subbing a period drama since there are usually a bazillion episodes. lol I'm really enjoying this one especially. The sets they have used for this one are so beautiful and costumes as well. Just love it!

Thank you for episode 5 and 6. There is no Japanese subtitles for episode 15, I have searched other places than Jpsubbers but haven't found any.

Edit: Got hold of ep15, so it's no longer missing. :)

Try to ask if tenkal has access to a recording of it, maybe? Worth a shot. I've seen Chinese softsubs around but not Japanese ones.

Already asked, he didn't have it. Checked Jpsubbers, MediaCrit, Zhuixinfan, PPX, and pikataa3's Ameba.
