ATARU [Eng Subs] (Dropped)

Postby ericparo » Wed May 09, 2012 5:22 am

I'm stopping Ataru as someone else is now working on it
their quality is better than mine, i'm not up to the challenge.
The series subbing jungle is a bit to rough for me :-)
i will be focusing on movies instead.
Thank you all for your kind encouragement.

I decided to sub ATARU before I found out about your release, but it took me some time to contact SARS-Fansubs and Ep1 was a lot of work, so it took us quite some time to release.
Sorry about not announcing about it earlier (but I didn't exactly know if we still had the release capability or if I could make time for another series that I'm subbing this season).

Now I really have the pressure to catch up with the broadcast

P.S. Usagi Drop movie was a series I was really interested in too, but I found your subs after someone told me there's subs already and preemptively dropped it. You must have a really good taste :P

Good luck with your movie subs :salut:
You should also upload them to places like kloofy.net and TPB for better visibility because I personally couldn't find it in my brief search at the time.

No one really can, because if I'm interested enough in a show, then what other groups are doing wouldn't make a slightest difference to me.

Thanks for your work so far on the subs, ericparo. You did a really good job and I was still planning on watching your subs even with SARS releases (you were ahead anyway). I'm sad to see you're dropping, but that's alright. I've seen some of your movie subs as well and enjoy them, so thank you for continuing with that.

I don't think it would've been anyone's loss for you to continue this, though. I've always found it kind of odd when this happens, doubled up projects that is. Is there really anything wrong with it? Nah. Fans can pick whichever translation they like better, and it shows that the series is probably worth watching (it is!).

anyway, just saying in case some do not know and are waiting longingly, this drama is hardsubbed by smappiesubs as well and they release quite fast, considering that they are subbing two dramas, Ataru and 37-sai de Isha ni Natta Boku ~Kenshui Junjo. ep 4 sub for ataru has alrdy released. Have to join their lj to download.

For those waiting for English subs, I do have episode recaps up for the first 6 episodes now. I went on vacation last month and fell behind and have been working to catch up.

I know it's not the same as watching it with subtitles.

You did a great job, it's beautiful,
it seems it takes as much time as subbing, certainly you have the skill.

perhaps someone should consider taking this project on again. SARS usually does a great job, but i agree they are taking unusually long with this series.

I have a funny story to tell

It's like, there is a wedding with 300 guests, and this caterer comes and sets the table for free, and food, drinks are served for free, and the guests rejoice, start to eat and drink and sing; then that other guy comes and sets table and food and drinks for the same wedding, same banquet, same guests, just next to the first table, and guests start to wonder what's going on, wander back and forth between the 2 tables, start comparing and criticizing, although they never had to pay a cent, and they had quite a lot of fun ...
So the first guy stops and looks at the mess and thinks "What the f*? What kind of joke is that?"
So he withdraws because the motivation is lost to prepare something special for the guests, and soon he is forgotten because what the crowds want is to fill themselves, they don't care how it fell in their plate ... but after an hour the second caterer starts to be busy somewhere else, shows up less and less often, guests grow uneasy, hungry and thirsty, the music has stopped too... awkward silence.
The second caterer was strange to begin with, strange during his service and strange in the way that he is gone but not gone ...
You think he would even bother offer an explanation or an apology?
Everyone hides behind an avatar precisely to never have to take no responsibility about nuttin.
If it gets too hot, change avatar, change your IP, change sex ... and you're "free".
(free as a dis-incarnate net-ghost to roam for eternity)
In the meantime nothing gets done anymore in Fan-fairy-subbie Land.
...
But have faith dear fans, coz, as American popular wisdom teaches us:
"It ain't over till the fat lady sings"

eric there are a few of us who love and respect your work in subbing ATARU far better than SARS (they completely soiled their reputation), you were the rightful subber of this series, they could have at least showed some decency before coming out and slamming you by the door, they really pissed me off, promising to finish subbing it but dropping it at the last minute =/

thing is eric, would it be possible for you to resume subbing this drama? i am one of your avid fan, i love your subs and how on time you release them, and the hard work you put into each and every drama you sub. would you find it in your heart to kindly continue right where you left it? please...i would really appreciate it if you do ^^

tnx and more power to you..

I think eric is saying that the fat lady is backstage getting ready to sing but is still putting on her makeup and not yet ready to sing. Once she sings you have to stand back because she is a powerful singer.

So if she's not yet ready to sing then it's not over yet.

Some subs are going to come out and soon I hope.

the point here is that people care less about what subbers go thru, they work painstakingly and as fast as they could to post their work here on d-addicts, most of the time people steal that sub and post is somewhere else without even crediting the one person who worked hard for it, and most importantly how others steal the limelight....

its about respect on ones work from both fans and co-subbers alike, ericparo voluntarily put his ability to sub these dramas for free, so lets give some credit to his hardwork...at least he is honest unlike SARS =/

please stop with the sars bashing. They did a great job on many many projects, so please cut them some slack! They're no beginners and 8th sin hasn't changed his name for years. Just yesterday I watched The million yen woman which he, or she translated so well. I also love many projects ericparo has taken on. Both are in my eyes respected subbers. Actually, 8th sin hasn't asked for Eric to drop the project, so maybe you could just work both on the project. That happened before... Anywayz, let me thank you both for your work!

I have heard for years KDrama vs JDrama, both have their good points which makes me wonder why there are so many JDramas that are dropped, KDramas on the other hand have so many different subbers subbing the same drama that if one drops out "so be it". JDramas are usually shorter and yet they are dropped and we all know once they are dropped, they are usually forgotten. I tried editing one and found it hard, if someone wants to try it, why don't they do a SMAPXSMAP or VS Arashi, maybe a movie they are a lot shorter.
Just my thoughts.

Subbers are sooo special, if only they really knew it.

SARS does a great job with subbing, but I don't think all the fancy stuff they do is necessary. I haven't followed Eric P's translations for too long, but I'm amazed at how fast he releases his subs and they are very accurate. His subs don't have all the fancy fonts and karaoke syncing, but he gets the job done, and we should all appreciate his hard work.

Reading through previous posts, I didn't realize SARS just barged in on Eric P's work. That wasn't right and I feel Eric P deserves an apology from SARS. However, at this point, the ball is in SARS' court, As much as I want to see this series subbed soon, I don't think Eric P. should tackle the project again unless SARS officially drops ATARU. He would be doing to SARS what SARS initially did to him. I guess its just a waiting game from here.

Anyway, just my two-cents.

Did you actually watch eric's subs? His subs are littered with awkward and/or wrong english and translation mistakes. They're not good enough by any means and there's no reason to appreciate lousy/rushed work like his.

I agree with you that fancy typesetting isn't needed (and sometimes even ruins a sub) but SARS has cut back a lot on their fancy stuff in their release of Ataru. There's still sign typesetting and a "SARS presents" thing at the title but there's no karaoke, no watermark and it's softsubbed so you can change it if you do think it's still too fancy.

I'd have preferred if they did this years ago but it's still great to see a group like SARS finally realizing it's 2012 and they need to catch up and stop subbing like it's 2004.

You all seem to think that just because a show's already being subbed it can't be picked up by another group/person? Just like how SARS had no reason to not pick up Ataru when they did Eric can just as well continue Ataru from where he left off.

I do think he made the right choice in dropping Ataru though. But if he's still so bitter about SARS doing this to him then he should just continue subbing the show?

I've only seen Eric's GTO subs and they are pretty good. I believe he's doing other projects concurrent to GTO and still manages to release subs within days of the original broadcasts...which is impressive!

I believe its just common courtesy...if someone or some group is taking on a project, I don't think its right for another person/group to pick up the project. YES...they have the right to pick it up, but i feel it's simply rude.

Its a waste of resources to have two people/groups taking on the same project independently.

I feel bad for bringing this topic up. I wrote my first comment without thinking and knowing what was really going on. I kinda feel like I threw salt on a healing wound. My apologies to everyone. I think we should just wait

I just watched about 15 mins of Eric's ATARU translations. I think you are being overcritical. Yes...I did find a few minor errors, but it doesn't throw the story off by any means for non-Japanese speaking viewers. I've seen worse errors being made on subs that were aired on US TV.

Eric P is a one man team. He probably doesn't have the resources and manpower to go over the subs a dozen+ times. Yet... he is able to produce very good subs in a short amount of time.

Rest assured people! Although the subs could use some minor polishing...Eric P's work is legit!

Releasing within a day of the original broadcast is only impressive if you actually do good work.

It doesn't matter. I do agree that it's nicer to announce projects beforehand but that's not always an option. Like 8thsin said he wasn't sure if he'd actually have time and would've been able to find a group to work with so the planning must've taken quite some time. To announce a project during that time would be quite silly as they weren't sure if it would come to fruition yet.

For example, I've been wanting to sub the new GTO drama ever since I've heard of them doing a remake but it was less than a week or so before release that I was actually sure we'd be able to even release it. To announce subbing when we don't even have a translator for it would be quite silly.

It's thinking like this that lead a lot of good drama to be left with awful subs. Anyone can pick up whatever they want and if I'd actually follow this rule of yours I'd have nothing to sub. I enjoy picking up hidden gems (Shukumei 1969-2010, Angel Bank) that would've never been subbed otherwise but sometimes you just have to stop caring about whether someone's already subbing it and do what you want to work on. Otherwise you'll just be subbing crappy leftovers all the time.

He's fast yes, but does that mean lines like this are okay? I'm just glancing through GTO ep 1 here, I could make this list a lot longer if I wanted to:

Code: Select all

These subs need so much more than just minor polishing (I know this is from GTO but I could do the same thing for Ataru). Eric's english is just not good enough and he's trying to improve by forcing himself to translate. That obviously doesn't work.

And in case you're going to say "I still understand those lines!" Here's a major translation fuckup:

Dialogue: 0,0:50:02.70,0:50:06.58,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,Our school is going through a difficult time right now.
Dialogue: 0,0:50:08.39,0:50:14.76,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,What we want from you is the kind of strength you showed off when you performed that German Suplex.
Dialogue: 0,0:50:15.07,0:50:16.49,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,German Suplex?

There's more but this is the only major one I remember. Onizuka paid Ryuji for a fake teacher's license and that's why he already has one. This is also why Ryuji punches Saejima when he says this.

And it's already hinted at when they're talking in the cafe earlier in the episode:

Code: Select all

Dialogue: 0,0:14:43.72,0:14:45.68,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,Don't pay somebody else to take them for you either!
Dialogue: 0,0:14:45.68,0:14:47.25,Default,,0000,0000,0000,,Funny to hear you say that.

you guys are too rude. =.=
just appreciate what you have otherwise do better yourself...share the subs that you created with everyone.

if you can't do that, stop complaining.

believe it or not it discourages people from sharing and subbing period. no one gets paid here for their time spent

Wow... what the **** are you talking about?

You have absolutely NO idea what's going on do you?

eric is technically being paid for their time spent here.. .HELL from day ONE of him registering on the boards he's been making money for being here.

HOly crap you're oblivious.

What discourages people from sharing/subbing are people like eric, claiming projects so other groups/people will do others/ not sub at all because he's claimed them all.

And to quote from eric:
"hey owe me $122, they never paid a cent, they don't answer mails;
I was paid with adf.ly and a friend was paid with adfloc.us; it seems adfloc is more $ per clicks.
keywords "adref is a scam", "adref doesn't pay", "adref is not paying"
.... i hope i was clear, so that other people won't get scam..."

Here's Proof

You're seriously joking yourself right?

Sometimes it's just sad to hear/read some of the userbase's replies in regards to subs, it pains me to say that people definitely appreciate speed over quality. I mean yayaay same/next day release... oh wait quality takes away from how good the drama can actually be.

PS:
Yeah we must be rude for providing criticism that he DOESN'T take. Get a QCer, and what happens? He "QCs" it himself, that's not getting a QCer, that's just being selfish. We provide suggestions and he doesn't take it, that's fine, it's his subs / his money so he has the "f*ck it, my subs, I'm getting money, who cares what you think" attitude.

Honestly, some of the comments/replies he makes doesn't make much sense, and summarizes to just what I said.
