Totally agree. I would say that even Basic Japanese is not enough to do good translation work, not to mention how painstaking it would be to look up almost every other word in every sentence. I use an online tool to convert. Usually it doesn't give any problems: But, the solution above seems better though

Can't you just convert the subs to .srt?
I do that all the time, because personally, I prefer .srt to .ass or .smi.
