If your PC can't handle 720p videos, give the Divx h264 codec or the CoreAVC codec a try. These 2 codecs are the best in terms of low cpu usage for decoding h264 videos. The Divx codec is free while the CoreAVC codec is $14.99, IRCC.

I am not sure what the problem was but I have had similar issues in the past and this is how I solve it. Make a new text file and then copy and paste the text from the old file to the new file and then save it and then rename the extension to .srt or .ass. This always worked for me. Hope that helps.
