Yes, because the facilities to locate all existing subtitles are available:

INDEX LIST of All Subtitle Threads (Search In Here)
http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_17098.htm

The index is VERY accurate. If the drama you're looking for isn't listed in that index, then simply they do not exist. Other resources to look into include the fansub wiki:

^Well, there is an exception to that one.....

Sub files ripped from boxsets produced by Yesasia (meaning, Yesasia Ent. *made* the subs) can't be posted here. For the time being that only applies to some Korean dramas. Those will be the ones that exist but aren't here Smile

I am curious, fansubbers usually don't create the original language subtitle right, that is Japanese subtitle for a Japanese drama?

Generally, no. But I have seen some translators script a show in Japanese first. And then they translate the script to another language. So at one point in the process, subs in the native language may actually be available. Its just that they're rarely ever made available to the public.

Part of translating is context; if you translate on a per-sentence basis, that on-the-spot translation may not fit the context of the rest of the show. Therefore, I would think that a translation would be more concise if the script was written in its native language first. Then that way the translator would see a pattern of sorts, and then write the translated sentences to better fit that pattern.

Also, most Chinese dramas come with c-subs hardsubbed onto the show.

AND as a very laaaaaaaate reply to the original purpose of the thread.

Fansubbers want to focus their energy on good shows. And it's hard to judge if a show is very good unless you've watched it in its entirety. Therefore, people who have not watched a show--or who have watched a show without understanding it can't tell if a show is good and fansub-worthy. Therefore, I personally ignore their requests. (There are exceptions, of course, but not many.)

On the other hand, if it's a fellow translator, fansubber, or somebody who speaks the original language who says, "This show has to be subbed!!!!!!!!", then I'd consider it. Because that person ACTUALLY watched the show and can evaluate its worthiness to getting subbed.

Thanks groink, ethidda. Any chance fansubbers will start including the original language script along with uploads?

Well the Chinese ones come like that from Chinese television. They air with the Chinese hardsubs so there is no way to get a softsub of that.

And Groink was speaking theoretically. I don't know anyone who actually transcribes an episode before translating it.

Thou shalt NOT request subtitle!

the exception to this is if you are willing to actually HELP create the subtitles.

the rule was established because people can beg and plead for subs, but that's not going to solve anything. if you're actually willing to help time, translate, encode, capture, or something, then head on over to our FANSUB section. then perhaps the subs will appear.

I'm pretty sure I wrote - "where can i find english subs for king sejong" , i did not request subs for the series bcoz i know it's not easy to take on a project like that considering it has more than 100 epis...

as for helping make the subs, i wish i could if i only knew how to speak korean..the truth is, i am even trying to learn how to speak korean bcoz of my love for the korean dramas (mostly historical drams)...
