@dthekim:

I also VisualSubsync and I agree it's the best (after using Subtitle Workshop for so long).

1. You can display your sub text inside VSS. But first of all, you'll need to save your first few sub lines as SSA, but you must manually fix the SSA file first before continuing with the rest of the sub.

Here's how: Replace the SSA header with the following:
Code:
[Script Info]
Title: <untitled>
Original Script: <unknown>
Synch Point: Side 1 0m00s
ScriptType: v4.00
Collisions: Normal
PlayResY: 600
PlayDepth: 0
Wav: 0, 123456,C:\mywav.wav
LastWav: 1
Timer: 100.0000

[V4 Styles]
Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, SecondaryColour, TertiaryColour, BackColour, Bold, Italic, BorderStyle, Outline, Shadow, Alignment, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, AlphaLevel, Encoding
Style: Default,Arial,30,16777215,8454143,65535,0,-1,0,1,2,2,2,30,30,25,0,0

2. I might be wrong, but for other file format (like RMVB or OGM), you can rename its extension to AVI and still play correctly inside VSS.

Hope this helps.

I couldn't get Miya to work for my Mac very well.

I've had much better results with Jubler (also free), but if anyone is aware of other products I would love to hear about it.

@canmield-dono, i'm not sure if you know already but Aegisub has now support for Mac and Linux Smile Aegi has everything you need for technical buildup of fansubbing (minus the encoding of course)

hmm... - i'll most prolly post my tutorial here prolly when i revised it (it's darn old - as i used Aegi v1.9 i think as the screenshots pinch)

i have to say that the soft subs are not nearly as good as hardsubs, especially for people who dont have VobSub for some insane reason. you have to hope that the subs you downloaded are in time with the vids.....
although they usually come out faster....

PostPosted: Tue Jul 22, 2008 8:24 pm    Post subject: Ripping the timing from hardsubbed videos   Post Rating: 0 Reply with quote

Hi there,

Sorry if I am posting in the wrong place, but I was wondering if any one can help me learn how to rip the timings from hardsubbed videos.

I want to subtitle Thai Lakorns, and I think I can complete alot if I knew just how to rip or extract the timings.
I tried to rip the subtitles using AVISUBDETECTOR and SUBRIP but I don't know why it's not going as smoothly as other people's...

I didn't want to waste time ripping the subtitles because in the end I will have to translate it all again anyway as the English translation on that particular lakorn is not that good.

Could anyone please advise me on how to do this?

Many thanks for reading.

shollada, many people have tried to write/use programs to rip hardsubbed videos, but the fact of the matter is, it's near impossible. If your hardsubbed video has subs on a black background, you can use subrip for a fairly accurate result. However, if the subs are on pictures, the computer has virtually no way of distinguishing the picture part and the text part of the video. In that case, I'm afraid you'll have to have your subs timed by a person.
