EP3
VOCABULARY LIST
自然の摂理 腹話術の人形
ニヤケ顔人形 オオカミの遠ぼえ

NOTES
2:01, onwards and in other eps
"Parents' Visiting Day" 授業参観 jugyou-sankan: Literally class visiting, this is where parents usually come see their children and their teachers having their lessons.

-------------------------------------------------
EP4
VOCABULARY LIST
デフレ・スパイラル 動物園 依願退職 貧乏暇なし 黒鉛
性格の不一致 年収 平等 憲法 基本的人権
自由権 平等権 生存権 資本主義 共産主義

NOTES
5:09
Mohan 模範: Exemplar, model, paragon
Kiritsu 規律: Order, discipline
"Classroom disciplinary breakdown": 学級崩壊 gakkyuhoukai
The phenomenon where teachers are unable to control their students and impose order in the classroom

24:05
Remi: the girl likes to refer to herself by her own name, like Elmo does. Where it's grammatically possible I have done the same.

24:11
NEET (not in education, employment or training) Basically those who are not housewives or students and have no regular jobs; freeters.

30:04, 30:14
"What we really think": 本音 honne
"What's socially appropriate and expected": 建前 tatemae
See Wikipedia for more on these concepts from Japanese cultural studies.

40:11
"Wholesome and cultured lives": 健康で文化的な生活 kenkou de bunkakiteki-na seikatsu
This wording and other social rights can be found in Article 25:

"All people shall have the right to maintain the minimum standards of wholesome and cultured living. 2) In all spheres of life, the State shall use its endeavors for the promotion and extension of social welfare and security, and of public health."

-------------------------------------------------
EP5
VOCABULARY LIST
好青年 美青年 貴重 幸せになるマシーン
ポアンカレ予想 教育委員会 問題外
良い絵 悪い絵 友

NOTES
00:36
"Morning class" 朝の会 asa no kai: The first class of the day

02:25
Kihan 規範: Model, standard

05:19
"Lunch monitor [duty]" 給食当番 kyuushoku touban: elementary school students take turns to collect and serve lunch to the class, also cleaning up afterwards. You can see this in, for instance, Jyoou no Kyoushitsu (The Queen's Classroom).

06:05-32
As far as I can tell Oosugi Ren is writing nonsense, so don't worry too much about what it means Tongue

06:37
Richard Hamilton: Mathematician at Columbia University. From Wikipedia:
"Hamilton is best known for having invented the Ricci flow, which Grigori Perelman employed in his proof of the Thurston geometrization conjecture and the Poincaré conjecture."

08:15
"Monster X" 猛獣 moujuu X: this is the nickname Ayukawa-sensei has given Kento; see ep2 05:32.

11:42
Perelman: Grigori Perelman (1966-), Russian mathematician based in St. Petersburg, published several papers in 2002-3 outlining a proof of the Poincaré conjecture. His work was subsequently checked and verified by several groups of mathematicians, and he was awarded a Fields Medal in 2006. The conjecture is also one of the seven famous Millennium Prize Problems, and the only one solved so far.

The New Yorker has an interesting article for laymen on Perelman, the conjecture he solved and issues regarding credit that emerged later: Manifold Destiny

11:46-12:10
I have tried my best to translate everything that was said in the original as closely as possible, but even so, it seems that this explanation of Poincaré conjecture is unclear and far from correct. (For one thing, it is a problem in mathematics and not physics, so it's got little to do with what the universe's structure is like.) For those who want to get a better understanding of the conjecture, the explanations given in Wikipedia's article Hamilton-Perelman solution of the Poincaré conjecture or Keith J. Devlin's The Millennium Problems (ISBN: 0465017290) may be more helpful.

12:25
Galois: Évariste Galois (1811-1832), mathematician
Mendel: Gregor Mendel (1822-1884), 'father of genetics'

15:17
Metropolitan 都 to: This may sound awkward, but it refers to Japan's only 'to', Tokyo, so I chose 'metropolitan.' Japan's immediate subnational adminstrative jurisdictions are known as to-do-fu-ken after 1 'to' (Tokyo), 1 'do' (Hokkaido), 2 'fu' (Osaka and Kyoto) and 43 'ken' prefectures.

15:22
Monbu 文部

-------------------------------------------------
EP6
VOCABULARY LIST
50億年 宿題より地球
月 太陽 正論 バリア 火星

NOTES
04:10
"Someone" 不審者 fushinsha: lit. a suspicious person. Here I just put "someone" because "a suspicious person broke in" sounds kind of weird in English.

10:20
"Sad", "heartbreaking" 悲しい, 切ない kanashii, setsunai: Although sometimes they are used interchangeably, kanashii is more about the emotion one feels, setsunai as an 'objective' assessment of something. E.g. a young child who loses his whole family in a car accident feels 'sad' kanashii, but his plight is 'sad' setsunai.

24:20
"My name is Aoi": Not knowing her name - or forgetting it - Ayukawa-sensei addressed her as 'you' anata, which may sound too direct and informal. I believe this is why Aoi feels she needs to provide her name.

44:37
"Prepared myself" 覚悟が決まる kakugo ga kimaru: OR resolved, became determined.

-------------------------------------------------
EP7
VOCABULARY LIST
年齢<43 (メールの数)
残酷 マシーン 正しく当てる
かえす まちがう 食べる
人喰いワニのジレンマ
「ひまっは(しまった)!」 電磁石

NOTES
12:29 and onwards
"Anti-crime buzzer" 防犯ブザー bouhan buzaa

20:36
"his mind was rotten" お前の脳みそは腐ってる omae no noumiso wa kusatteru: the actual, original word seems to be "addled," or rotten.

23:18
"I'm thinking hard about what others feel" 人の気持ちをいっぱい考えるよ hito no kimochi wo ippai kangaeru yo: this refers to what Kento's mom told him earlier about bearing in mind what others feel about his behaviour.

37:16
OK, this isn't really about the subs, but did you see how that actress playing Toma's mother tugged hard at the young actress playing Remi, when she walked in looking towards the camera? I have to say, the poor girl looks so stressed out.

44:15
"something to put at home" オブジェ obuje (from French objet): a curio

-------------------------------------------------
EP8
VOCABULARY LIST
静電気 マシーン 感電
テレポーテーション 瞬間移動
天才 平凡
放電 電流 電圧 電気ショック
モーター タイムマシーン 誘拐

NOTES
15:09
掘りごたつ horigotatsu: "a kotatsu whose heating element is set in a recess in the floor under a low table; a foot-warmer fixed in a sunken floor" (from my J-to-E dictionary).

19:45-48
"Have you seen that teacher before?": Tsunoda-sensei is played by the tarento 梅垣義明 Umegaki Yoshiaki, also known as "Ume-chan".

20:41
"Writing board" 下敷き shitajiki: a material placed under a sheet of paper for writing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shitajiki

22:21
"Like a toilet": The verb for 'flush' is the same as that for 'flow': 流れる nagareru.

31:34-41
"Word game" しりとり shiritori: Where people take turns coming up words starting with the last mora of the previous word (e.g. sakura -> rajio -> onigiri): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiritori

33:40
ギフテッド教育 gifuteddo kyouiku: Gifted education, or GATE (Gifted and Talented Education).

41:40-42
"Double jump unders, triple jump unders" 二重跳び nijuu-tobi, 三重跳び sanjuu-tobi: the rope goes around twice/thrice with each jump

"Alternate cross skipping" あや跳び ayatobi: alternately jumping normally, then jumping with hands criss-crossed

-------------------------------------------------
EP9
VOCABULARY LIST
300メートル誘拐 時空 タイムとラベル
立派な児童 空洞 骨髄
太陽系 銀河系 資本主義|共産主義
「お」/「を」 文明 犯罪です。 合法的 昭和
「僕の歯です。」 歯入りカレー

NOTES
00:58 "'time travel'" 時空旅行 jikuu-ryokou lit. space-time travel

04:55 "Maichou Shimbun" 毎朝新聞 maichou shinbun lit. every-morning news[paper]

05:32 ひらがな hiragana and カタカナ katakana: the two Japanese phonetic alphabets

09:20 "feet-first forward somersault": 逆上がり sakaagari

11:54 "It's you..." 「あなた・・」 "anata.." Also a term wives use to address their husbands.

20:06-19 "classroom teachers", "the classroom" 教育現場 kyouiku genba: the frontlines or actual scenes of education

Since the topic concerns me I was very much interested in how the writers handled it, how much crap they would get out and how much they would produce something that relates to the reality of the problem.
But my Japanese is not exactly great so I'm glad you subbed it, have been looking forward to it.

Thank you very much!
