I just received a phone call from Comcast telling me to limit my internet bandwidth usage. Failing to comply with Comcasts' warning will lead to termination of service. I was told I fell on the top bandwidth user in my area (thats nice). I asked for specifics and none was given. I felt I was left in the dark.

Just wondering if anyone is in the same boat as I am.

If that's how Comcast treats paying customers it's time to find a new ISP. Imagine going to a restaurant and being chewed out for NOT leaving food on your plate. If they really needed those bits so badly they would have used them instead of letting you have them.

You should have read your ToS more carefully. That's the reason why I haven't switched to cable even though it's a lot faster. If I remember correctly, they say the limit is 60GB/month. I exceed that every single month on ATT DSL and they never say anything. Somebody calculated that at full 6mbps download, you would reach that in less than a week. Once in a while is fine but if you do that every month, they will restrict you.

Hmm... I got a few of the infamous **** letters a couple years back.

Kinda funny. I called in and asked what my bandwidth limit was:

"There isn't one".

OK, then why this letter?

"Because you're using over 150 times the average user's bandwidth"

OK, so what should I limit it to?

"I have no idea"

OK, do you have a supervisor there?

"He doesn't know either. There's no set limit."

OK, so either come up with a hard limit in writing for me, or kindly leave me the hell alone and allow me to enjoy the service that I pay you guys for every month, okay?

"Uh, sure. Just try to use, uh, less"

Never got another letter again. Go figure.

I use Cox, and I'm sure I use more bandwith than almost anyone around me. I'm always downloading and helping seed, which means I leave my computer on for an eternity. As I'm typing this, I'm currently running 2 computers, my desktop and laptop. I'm currently downloading on my desktop and using the laptop to do work via VPN and websurfing. This week I had to buy a 1 TB Hard Drive in addition to my 500 Gigs already. Anyways, I haven't seen anything in writing yet from Cox. Antok makes a great suggestion, and you should call them again.

Always good to speak to their "retention" department. I got another $10 knocked off my bill for the next year after I mentioned the viable DSL and satellite options available...

Wow, you must be downloading quite a bit. I have Comcast, and I regularly download most from bittornent, which is running almost constantly, and then usually in the 30 gig a month off of Usenet. So I'm probably pushing in the 70 to 90 gig a month if not more, and a I am usually seeding at max upload speed , and I've never heard from them.

If you have the paperwork for your terms of service, check it for anything on bandwidth limitation. If it says nothing about bandwidth, then check for something on "terms and condition may change without notification/consent/something". If that does not exist either, try to use more bandwidth. Let them terminate your service. Take them to court. Become a millionaire ^_^

or buy a new car...depends on how good yu are at convincing a business to raise the settlement offer(if any), or convincing a judge that yu got screwed over ^_^

Can ones ISP really do that. I pay a monthly fee for my connection. They should be happy they get my money.

It all depends on your Terms and Conditions and whatever other legal documents they've had you agree to.

Keiko, it looks like you're in Sweden. trust me, the rules are different here.

here's another thread that's related:

Here's most ISPs form of logic....

Have you ever stood in line at a computer store? Remember those guys up in the front who are buying 100-pack DVD blanks? Quickly, off the top of your head, he's going to use these blanks to:

A. Back up photos of his family. He takes an average of one photo every 5 seconds for years.

B. Back up his financial records. 1,000,000 times on one disc, 100 times across DVDs.

C. Back up downloaded movies, porn, and/or dramas.

If you picked A or B, hmmmmmmmmmmm.....

ISPs think the same way. Most ISPs believe that there is no LEGIT reason for a single resident customer to download in the neighborhood of 60GB a month. If you download that much or more every month, they believe you're doing something illegal, and are therefore are breaking some rule in the contract. If you read the contracts, you'll find stuff like:

1. You're not allowed to run any host-type services, such as a web site or a mail server.

2. Not allowed to send X amount of e-mail in a Y span of time.

RARELY will you find an ISP who will sell you broadband with unlimited downloading and allow you to abuse this privilege month-after-month. The only technologies that offer no limits are fractional T-1, frame, or better. They're expensive, but that's because they're designed for business use - and those are the guys who transmit gobs and gobs of data every month.

yea, I have a monitor thing that I check so that I won't go over my limit.
I get 80GB for download and 40 GB for upload.
I have penteledata. They send me notices instead of phone calls.

I always try to monitor my limit. Go to their website, I think they have a monitoring thing.

i personally feel that the ISP will be quite lenient on you as long as you don't abuse their network. most people (like myself in the past) download way too d*mn much. i don't even have the time to watch most of the stuff i dl'ed, so now i really am picky with what i get. this way, it keeps me within the limits of my ISP's quota.
