A Video Tutorial on How to Convert a Real Media file (*.rmvb) to an XviD/MP3 file (*.avi) or h.264
I'll write a script later. I'll just call this version 1.0 because I realize I may have to update this in the future (due to new technologies or slowing down/speeding up some parts). Anyways, enjoy! Should I make this into a torrent? hahaha...
Sharebee! - http://sharebee.com/485d6502
and within it:
: MegaUpload - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3T7PHLTJ
edit:
- you'll need to add the fps=29.97, convertfps = true to the .avs file from the FAQ here on videohelp
- the .avs fille will get generated once you open the .rm/.rmvb once with VirtualDubMod
edit 2: also, this video could be used in addition to Adding Permanent Subtitles using VirtualDubMod (as seen here - http://forum.videohelp.com/topic272736.html), you'll just have to install VobSub after installing VirtualDubMod, and adding the TextSub filter before saving the video

REVISION 0.1 ALPHA a.k.a. super rough draft
1. Download these files:
2. Install in this order:
i. Right click on LameACM.inf file (setup file) and click Install 3. Run VirtualDubMod
a. File -> Open Video Files iii. Select your RMVB (example: Princess01.rmvb)
****BEGIN - NOT IN VIDEO BUT NECCESSARY****
4. Navigate to where your RMVB is
a. You will see along with your RMVB (Princess01.rmvb)
A file (Princess01--directshow.avs) b. Open Princess01--directshow.avs with Notepad c. You should see something like:
DirectShowSource(“Princess01.rmvb”) d. Edit Entire Line so it says:
DirectShowSource(“Princess01.rmvb”, fps=29.97, convertfps=true) 5. Run VirtualDubMod Again
a. Drag N Drop the AVS file (Princess01--directshow.avs)
Into the VirtualDubMod Window
****END - NOT IN VIDEO BUT NECCESSARY****i. Right Click -> Full Processing Mode
1. Layer 3 ACM, 44100hz, 128kb/s, joint stereo - for general purpose
c. Video -> Full Processing Mode i. Select XviD - Configure 1. Target Bitrate = 700 to 800 is fine
6. Wait an Hour or 2 (depending on size of file, speed of computer)
*alternatively, you can install the x264 encoder to encode videos into h.264 instead of XviD*

If I'm not supposed to post, sorry - I'm not really clear what "reserved for uploader" means...
I just wanted to say thanks for the tutorial - it's the best an simplest tutorial I've seen. Also, I have a couple questions. I followed the tutorial last night and there were a couple things different on my VirtualDubMod compared to the one on the tutorial.
I've attempted this twice & the first time when I went to Streamlist>Compression & selected Lame MP3, I did not have any Stereo selections. Everything said Mono. So I matched your specification only with Mono instead.
Then, when I go to Video>Compression & Select Xvid & click Configure - the button doesn't say "Target bitrate (kbps) - it says "Target quantizer" & I can only choose from 1 to 31. (I have no idea what that means so I chose 4 simply becuase that positioned the bar on the sliding scale around the same location as 800 did on your tutorial.)
I saved the video as an avi and everything went well but when I play the avi video, the sound gets horribly off-sync almost instantly and never recovered. (Edit: Oddly, the soft-subs are in sync with the sound, not the video. All of the audio plays from beginning to end but it's like the video lags as the video gets cut off several minutes before it should at the end. )
So I decided to try converting the rmvb again. This time when I selected Lame MP3 I noticed a checkbox to show all formats - when I selected that I was able to choose the correct Stereo option. I also noticed that by clicking on the "Target quantizer" button it changed to "Target bitrate"
But now, when I went to save it as an avi, an error message popped up saying, "Error initializing audio stream compression: The requested conversion is not possible."
So, I can't convert it at all if I choose the Stereo option for the audio. I tried saving it again using the correct Xvid bitrate but still using the Mono audio setting and the video is still lagging but at least it didn't get cut off this time.
Is there something I'm doing wrong or something I can do to get the video/sound corrected?
