I've been playing files with .srt softsubs with no problems since i started.

However, recently when i try to play videos with .srt, the font is huge and blocky taking up almost half the screen and going off screen. It used to play fine with the font nice and normal.

I can't think of anything i could've downloaded recently that could've done this. Does anyone know how i change fonts within an .srt so i can revert this back to the way it was?

Since .srt does not do anything about font styles, it'll be the thing that displays your subs which changed settings. Look at vobsub settings, or if you're using a player that plays subtitles (such as GOMplayer), look at the player settings.

the thing is i've never had to use any subtitle software. .srt and .ssa files have always worked with my player(s).

I use Core Media Player, however i also have vlc and winamp and those have always worked, just all of a sudden it became like this.

actually upon trying to fix this, i tried playing the videos on different players, and strangely only my main player, Core Media, can even display the subtitles anymore, although they're huge and go off the screen. VLC and winamp cannot even play the .srt. Which is strange because i'm sure vlc at least can play them on its own fine. I tried looking into the vlc settings but couldn't find anything.

Have you checked your *.srt-file? Some brains rename .ssa or .ass files and even .sub-files to srt.
You can use notepad for this. You should see something similar to this:

1
00:00:05,145 --> 00:00:06,645
Based on Ichikawa Takuji's Novel

2
00:00:07,100 --> 00:00:09,655
this years greatest love-fantasy.

3
00:00:12,906 --> 00:00:14,661
6 years ago
...

perhaps you sub experts can assist me with this confusing problem.

all my srt files are fine. except the ones i download from: Ainori / Love Wagon [Eng Subs] (Var Eps)
(Rollins' srt files)

for some reason, those srt files don't work with my mpc (k-lite codec pack) or my wmp11. in fact, even if i rename the file to another video and try to play it, it doesn't display. if i rename another srt file to ainori, it works fine (so it's not the video).

i've opened the srt file in notepad, and it seems fine.

Hey jholic,

I'm not sure if this have anything to do with your problem, but I thought it could work. Have you checked what format it is in? As in unicode, ansi, UFT-8, and etc? It could be just that. Maybe save it as unicode and see. Smile

But on another note, it played fine when I renamed it to a video I had...

This file
Ainori 2007.08.20 (#371) (720x480 DivX).srt
starts at the time 9min and 11sec. So you have nine minutes to wait, until something like
text appears.

After looking more:

Those files could be messed up. SRT are strict linear in time. So if, like with these files, a time -say 9mins 11secs - is first in line, times and texts before that time will never show up.

This happened because missing lines were attached to the beginning of the file. This will not do. You have to put those lines in order.

khmai and jocutus: thanks for your advice. i will pass it on....

EDIT:
jocutus: i was trying to understand what you were saying in your last few sentences, but forgive my ignorance. i know that some of the subs do not start until further into the episode. however, when i start the file, the green arrow (for vobsub) does not even appear! is it saved in a different format as khmai suggested?

I'm sorry about that, I do need to work on my expression.

Reference-File=Ainori 2007.08.20 (#371) (720x480 DivX).srt.

VLC plays subs, but since they are not in order, it is messed up.

MPC/VOBSUB do not show subs.

khmai was right: it is coded in UTF-8. After saving as ANSI-coded (notepad will do the trick),
the subs play just fine. Same goes for UNICODE-coded.

It appears that VOBSUB does not work with UTF-8, but ANSI and UNICODE. I missed out on that point. Sorry about that.

---------
As recently shown in the "yama-onna-kabe-onna" subtitle-thread, there will be more and more problems arising with unsorted and UTF-coded subtitles. The usual "thanks" will disappear and will be replaced by 'why can't i see the subs'. Mark my words. pale

Kind of off Topic:

but just out of curiosity could this unicode and unsorted and UTF-coded problem also occur when you use a DVD player to watch files? Some time ago I watched a file and the subs suddenly disappeared after 30 minutes. however I could see them perfectly while watching it on PC. I solved the problem by using one of the subtitel programms to create a new subtitel. But still I don't understand why that problem even occured.

jocutus: as usual, you are of tremendous help. thank you so much.

gixo: if the file was saved as one type (ANSI), then it would indeed be weird that it disappeared after 30mins. but i guess it's possible if the subber switched fonts or something in the middle of it.

fyi - I had the same issue with the Ainori subs beginning with 401. I only tried the .ass files, because I found a quick fix, using VLC player. Of course I've had to do it for each episode now, but it's relatively simple. If you can't get anything else to work, this may.

Go to: Settings > Preferences... > Video > Subtitles/OSD

Browse and select sub file for "Use subtitle file" field.
