what resolution is HDTV in Japan? in Korea?

I am really baffled now, the HD not supported sign also showed up when I tried to play an anime I just dl. Its 170mb avi file, this is getting really weird, I watched Naruto and Bleach which are similar files and its okay but how come this Nodame Cantabile anime is not?

your dvd player will not support one or maybe more of the following:

1. divx files over 720p or 704 x 396
2. the file may have a different codec, even if the file says avi, it could be encoded with x264, or something that is not divx supported.

You're right itsukiD! Its actually in an x264 format but was listed as an avi file. Is there a converter I can convert to avi files? or is there a player that can play it? To my understanding x264 is mp4?

well, essentially all compressed formats ie. divx, xvid, mp4, mkv, ogm, etc are mpeg4 based, just different flavors on how to compress video. you can convert back to avi to work on your stand alone player. you can use the divx converter ( you'll have to pay for the option to compress the file better ie quality/size ). if you don't mind paying for software I'd recommend Allok Software, but they cater their software for particular needs ( RM to avi / WMV to avi )

as for hardware, you might want to look into Media HDD players, they're like external hard drive enclosures, with hardware that can play a variety of Mpeg4 formats. some come with extras like wireless networking, so you can access video files from your primary computer and play them on your tv. the only downfall to this is that you're limited to the RGB component cables or DVi output. I've yet to find HDD player that has HDMI.
