I use 7-zip:
http://www.7-zip.org
I can use it for ZIP, RAR, ARJ, and lots more. I can even join and split files with it, so I don't use RJSplit anymore!

He's looking for "free". Winrar isn't free.

| Actually you can use WinRAR trial for 30 days (for free), and it'll just keep asking you to register after 30 days (you might lose some functions, but the main common functions are still usable)

Well then so is WinZip 11 - it supports RAR now. But that's beside the point - you should be un-installing the software if you decide not to purchase it after the 30-day window runs out. I'm myself a software developer, so I'm very much pro-developer when it comes to issues like this.

Then I urge you all to try 7-Zip... it's 100% free (and open-source).
And it's all in one, it can even detect files with .001 extension and will automatically join all files that come next to that extension. Can also uncompress a wide variety of archives (including RAR, even the windows CAB files and even self-extracting Installshield installers). Hahaha am I promoting it too much?

| There is a free unrar utility by Alexander Roshal. But I think .7z is better than .rar. I have started using the 7ZA utility by Igor Pavlov sometimes instead of the ancient pkzip 204g that I have always used.

try izarc if the above software suggestions dont work out or not to your liking.
http://www.izarc.org/
I tried winrar and winzip before and switched to this a while back since it was free and it handled all the compressed file types.

winrar is more mainstream, but 7z has better compression
there was a day where the people at rarsoft gave out winrar corp edition for free for an entire day, ask someone who has it ;)
