i sent a PM to a member here, but he/she might be really busy, so I may not get a reply, therefore I'm going to try my luck here.
I'm just caopying and pasting the message I sent to that member, in case anyone can help:
I know you must be busy as I notice that you are quite active on the site. However, I wanted to know if I may please ask you about the subbing process. I am trying myself to hardsub series (ie. Haken no Hinkaku), using VirtualDub. I'm not here to ask you how it's done, as I already know how.
What I am curious is how some hardsubbed series (such as Hanazakari no Kimitachi e) are done in such high quality? When I hardsub files, it seems like the file degrades and gets more pixelated than the original file. What am I doing wrong?

when i compress with divx..i just do a 1-pass.
with xvid, a single-pass.
i tried reading info on these 'passes', but i'm not getting it.
i'm basically trying to hardsub the korean drama coffee prince without losing quality.

i've only used divx, because my DVD player can recognize .avi fles/divx without having to convert to DVD (so i essentially just burn the disc as a data disc).
for coffee prince, there's an x264 version, which is really good quality. but how would i use virtualdub to hardsub an x264 file? i keep getting an error message. (when trying to hardsub bambino!, the last few episodes)

The second pass will greatly improve the quality. Set everything up like normal but change it to ....i think 2 pass - first pass. after that's finished, run it again but use 2 pass - second pass(last pass? final pass?). this is off the top of my head so i may be slightly off. taht's the general ...instructions? lol i can't type well at the moment.
edit: this is for xvid. i forget how divx setup is. somethign about nth pass. (it's nth...not a typo)

Remember that every time you reencode whether xvids, x264, or even mp3s you will lose quality. The question is how much and will it be that noticeable. The more "passes" the better quality. 2, or 3, or 4 its up to you, but definitely not 1 if you want quality. Also FYI quality will never be better than the source. So the key here is get good quality source material.
for x264 you'll need to use virtualdubmod

can a player that supports .avi files or divx files play x264 files?

Not at the moment, but new models of DVD players will start to support x264 as well, including Blu-Ray and HD DVD units. x264 is a licensed technology, so the manufacturer of the unit must pay a license fee, and also include that fee in the retail price.

for divx, is it ok to do first pass-speed?
and is there a difference in quality between divx and xvid? which is better?

| xvid supposedly has better quality. i remember i used to do like 20 passes with divx and the quality didn't come close to a 2 pass xvid encoding. might've been my junky computer tho ~_~
