just wondering if you think japanese variety shows use a laugh track? like not the shows where there is obviously an audience, but other smaller shows.

I don't think so. The laughing and clapping in all the variety shows I've seen are consistent with what you actually see. For example, in SMAPxSMAP, they don't have an audience per se, and as a result it sounds like only the cameraman, the key grip and his girlfriend are laughing.
Also, you know when you hear a pre-recorded laugh track because the laughing fades out very quickly. Being brought up with M*A*S*H (they filmed all the episodes without an audience, and then later on added the laugh tracks) the laughing just sounds fake. I don't hear the same thing in any of the Japanese shows. I can see why M*A*S*H did it (when they're filming outside with helicopters flying Jeeps running around, you must stick in laughter when Hawkeye makes a joke), but I don't think Japanese shows have the same challenges.
