I have heaps of friends who watch all sorts of videos with softsubs on their Macs, with little problems. |

VLC is crummy and not terribly stable, so I'm not sure why it won't work on your comp. Some people have reported problems with displaying subs on it, though so far I've never had any trouble when I've used my friends' computers.
But overall I'd recommend GOM. It even comes with its own codec system so none of that "codec pack" jazz. And Mplayer is probably the easiest for Mac, isn't it? Drag and drop and then use keyboard shortcuts to fiddle with the subtitle display.
