Maison Ikkoku Special
This version syncs with this torrent.
I wanted to watch it in hi-def, so I went ahead and re-did the timings for the Divx. It will work for both Divx raws.
(Can anyone tell I'm a Maison Ikkokuholic? Anime, manga, even manga in Japanese now that I know enough to get a decent percentage of it.)
Update, 08/30/2008: Here is the soft sub for the 2008 special. The lyrics of the closing song are a bit sketchy, but the rest is not bad.

It only works up to the first ad break. It is a simple matter to adjust the timings to sync with the Divx. Surely someone will post one before too long.

Try Media Classic Player or VLC. Some people have reported trouble playing back this particular torrent with VLC. I am one of them. I watched the hidef Divx torrent instead. But according to posts over at the torrent thread for the x264, Media Classic Player works.
Is the subtitle file in the same directory as the avi? Have you enabled (or disabled) on the menu? (VLC allows you to disable subs. I assume Media Player does too.)
