I watched 自殺サークル (suicide club) on both original japanese DVD and the one made in america and they didn't seem different at all. I also never heard any complaints about quality from people who bought japanese movies that were made for america.

Whoever said this was probably one of those japanese obsessed otaku who says everything in america is crap and Japan is a wonderland where the streets are made of chocolate, and it rains milk and honey and all the japanese girls look like ueto aya and will be instantly in love with you etc etc.

I might be wrong on this (correct me if I am please) but I don't think that there are any dramas that were made for the US. If you see someone selling them on the corner of the street chances are it's bootlegged (I see them all the time in NYC).

You can buy the original DVDs from yesasia.com, ebay, or any other asian internet outlet. But why would you want to when you could just download it here for free?

this is true lol. i think the same thing.

well, i download for free this stuff but some thing mean a lot to me, you know? (sekai ni chuushin, BoA Love and Honesty Tour, Evangelion, Horie Yui sensual photos lol, etc). I think this things deserve a original DVD/CD for collection.

i don't like very much ebay, and yesasia it's good.

you know another stores? for compare the prices.

thanks for awnser

You also have to remember allot of the anime fan-sub people are always trying to come up with reasons why they shouldn't buy licenced anime DVDs and are justified in downloading fan-subs when they could buy the domestic DVDs.

The ones complaining about the lower quality because there are only 1 or 2 episodes on a Japanese DVD and the US versions have higher compression to fit 4 or 5 episodes per DVD, are the same ones complaining that the US DVDs are a rip off because there isn't enough episodes per DVD.

Almost no US DVDs are edited compared to the Japanese originals, if they contain a Japaneses soundtrack, and leaving the original credits in (or adding them as a second angle) is also becoming more common.

I kind of wish Jdrama would start to get region 1 licenses, but I guess that's what my region free player is for.

on a side note, i do notice that asian dvds in general tend to use more of the space on a DL disc than american movies. if you use dvdshrink and rip a jp/kor dvd, they normally come out to about 6-8gb. but US movies are usually only about 4-5gb. i'm not sure how it is now.

Anime companies in the US who license anime and release it on DVD will often get the R2 DVD masters from the Japanese rightsholders, so often times R1 and R2 anime DVDs will pretty much have the same quality video (except that the R1 anime DVDs will have more episodes than the R2 ones). doinkies owns a lot of R1 anime DVDs, and the quality is generally not too doinky. However, sometimes, the Japanese rightsholders may have the R1 anime company use the TV version of a series to discourage reverse importation (i.e., they fear that anime otaku in Japan will import the R1 DVDs since they are cheaper and have more episodes than R2 DVDs). These sorts of releases don't occur quite as much though.

As for why J-dramas aren't licensed in R1...the producers and TV stations just don't see a big market for them outside of Asia. Heck, Fuji TV doesn't let local Asian TV stations sub their J-dramas when they air them. Not a lot of people know about J-dramas here as opposed to anime, and probably only a couple people would buy R1 DVDs of them. Though a lot of anime fans know about the J-dramas that are based off of manga and anime, and those that are tied in with the fandom somehow like Densha Otoko, not a lot of them seek out other J-dramas. If any J-dramas were to be licensed here, probably ones based off of well-known anime and manga (like GTO, perhaps) would be licensed first.

Yeah, the GTO movie did get a R1 release, but I'd doubt you'll see the series do the same.

I can't say much about this. I own one (1) US DVD. Simple reasons for this: US DVDs = region 1; Japanese/European DVDs = region 2; and the relation between Japanese DVDs and European DVDs in my shelves is possibly around 20:1

But it's not just that the TV stations don't believe there's a market in the US/Europe. It's more that Japanese TV series are made for Japanese TV stations and for a Japanese audience. Swedish TV series are made for Swedish TV. German TV series are made for German TV. That's how it is. German Pro Sieben doesn't give a damn whether someone in Sweden or France likes one of their series. They just don't care. It's not their market, not their targetted group.

And well, I really doubt that there would be a real market for Japanese tv series on DVD in the US or Europe. How many people will bother getting something with subtitles? A small number of nerds like us (I, for myself, hate dubbings. Often they are just plain wrong). But the majority of the people are lazy bastards and "don't want to read while watching a movie/series".

And to be honest, I don't want to see Orange Days dubbed into English. Or Summer Snow dubbed into German. That would just suck. I rather watch it with the original Japanese audio, even without subtitles.
