Hi,
I've heard on few discussion boards, especially the Chinese, that Jeon Ji Hyun may be Chinese because of her real sir name being Wang.
Of course, Jeon has always denied it, but, this got me really interested in her past ancestry since Wang is not a common name in Korea anymore.
Anyone have any real, definitive proof?

Wang is a Korean family name 왕 but fairly rare in Korea. According to the South Korean census of 2000, in that year 23,447 people bearing the Wang surname were living in the country. [1]
Wang was one of the most powerful clans in the Chinese commanderies on the Korean Peninsula. According to the Houhanshu, its ancestor Wang Zhong originally lived in Qi (Shandong) in the 2nd century B.C.E., but fled to Lelang when the Prince of Qibei revolted against the Han Dynasty. The Wang clan flourished in the Lelang commandery, and seems to have contributed to the cultural development of subsequent kingdoms.
Although it was the Goryeo royal family name, Wang is very rare today. It is said that when Goryeo fell, people called Wang changed their surname to avoid severe persecution from the succeeding Joseon Dynasty. The Kaesong Wang lineage traces its ancestry to the Goryeo rulers.

hmms...the surname "Wang" might be rare, but not extinct in Korea...and if she denied it, than I'm sure she's Korean afterall.
I mean, why lie about her ethnicity in the first place? I doubt whether she's Korean or Chinese will have a negative effect on her popularity.
but thanks for the info, that was a very interesting read. At least I learned something new tonight~ _________________ watching: Ryusei no Kizuna, Miss No Good, Bloody Monday, Room of King

| I just thought this question is a little funny since she has done a lot of commercial in China. I know there were at least two- one for Coca cola, and another with Pantene. I don't think she has any reason to lie about her heritage. I don't think it is looked down apon in Korea to be Chinese.

Those Wangs changed their name to 전/Jeon/Jun.
As for Sassy Girl, JJH has denied the rumors more than a few times now, and many actors change their name. For instance, Han Gain's real name is Kim Hyeon Ju. Also, there are (Korean) singers and actors with the name Wang. For instance, Wang Bitna, who was in the recent show, Dear Heaven.
It doesn't matter either way though.
