ATTN: awrittensin, for the subtitles…

ありがとございました!

One Question: I know that "ame" is both the word for "rain" as well as a female name (and perhaps more relevantly, the name of the main character in this drama); but I thought to issho ni was "with," and the construction "Ame to yume no ato ni" ( 雨と夢の後に ) really looks like "After the rain and dreams" to me. So why did you translate it as "With Ame after a dream?"

[Please note: That really is a genuine information-seeking Question, not a "You did it wrong" statement pretending to be a question. I'm hoping to understand the language better, not to criticize those who surely know more than me.]

^I know you asked awrittensin but I'll throw in something to b/c it may be what s/he was thinking ^^; Not trying to answer for her, I'll see what s/he says too Smile

It may be sort of a pun thing since the girl's name in the drama is "Ame", same kanji as "rain". But let's see if you typed it like this: 「雨と、夢の後に」. "To" isn't necessarily just translated as "and", it can also sorta be used as "with" too I thought, while I was thinking "issho ni" I thought as "together with" in a sentence like 私は勝男と一緒に学校へ行きました (I went to school [together] with Katsuo). I may be wrong since Japanese tends to be correct in my head but hard to explain in English.

That's what I was thinking....does it make sense? sweating I could be totally off but that's what I was thinking....

Yes, that does make sense if you think of it as a play on words… which would mean that the title sort of means both "With Ame after a dream" and "After the rain and dreams," right?

I've read about the Japanese penchant for word games, but I'm only just now beginning to understand the language well enough to catch any of it.

Big Smile

To answer your question - (although neokinpatsu was close) the title is a double entendre. The particle "to" can mean both "and" and "with." You don't have to say the whole phrase 'to issho ni" to express "with." For example, if the title was "雨と夢のあとにいた” that would mean "I was with Ame after a dream," Ame being the main character's name. So although the title isn't EXPLICITLY "With Ame after a Dream" I chose it to express the double meaning of the title, which someone who doesn't know much Japanese might miss, but a native speaker would definitely notice. I also assumed everyone who downloaded my subs saw the drama at one point or another translated somewhere as "After the rain and dream."

In the first episode, for example, Tomoharu is by Ame's side as she wakes up from a dream, so that's why I decided to stick with that notion.

However, I do think that "After the Rain, After the Dream" is a more correct title because since I subbed the drama I read the book which the drama was based off of (of the same name) by Yu Miri. You have a sense of the pun in the title, but I think the book's title should be translated into English (if it ever would be) as "After the Rain, After the Dream." I'm just too lazy to re-edit my subs to reflect my change of opinion. Whistling

However, the story of the book is EXTREMELY different from the drama version. It's barely the same story. But you're free to call the drama whatever you want in English, since both are correct (but 'After the Rain, After the Dream' is probably what the author intended the story to be taken as.)

PM me if you have any other questions! I know a lot about the author of the book, so if you have any questions about her, feel free to ask me Smile

Just finished watching this series. I have never cry so much watching a movie. It's a good one to watch eventhough the subtitle and the audio is out of syn with my copy. Not sure whether this one at D-Addicts is OK. I will try to use the subtitle here and see if it works fine with my avi files.

Worth watching for those who want a good ghost story.

After another in a line of members contacted me about timing problems, I addressed the issue on the front page of this thread. Please check it and try those solutions. It's gotten to the point where I am getting some rude emails "accusing" me of timing my subtitle files incorrectly. I think the majority of the members who download my subtitles know that I produce very high quality subtitles, alone, and I do quality checks to ensure accuracy.

Now that I've posted this on every subtitle thread for every project I've done, there is no longer an excuse to me rudely email me.

Hi awrittensin,

It is very nice of you to redo this. i can't believe members would do that to you. That's absolutely ungrateful. For me when I was watching this series (btw, this series was sent to me by my friend so I didn't download this from D-Addicts) and when I realized the timing was off, I just open my vobsub on the side of my computer screen and watch the series and reading the sub same time. It sounded crazy but I got the whole picture......lol.
