Quick question. Is Oricon the definitive source for top or hit songs from Japan, similar to Billboards in America? Or is there another company that I don't know about?

Yes, Oricon is the standard de-facto when it comes to industy-related ratings. Their ratings are based solely on record sales, which is the same system as what Billboard uses. All the other rating systems - especially the ones you see in music shows like MUSIC STATION, Hey!Hey!Hey!, etc. use other means to obtain information, such as feedback from fans.

From what I've heard, Oricon does not use sales data for on-line sales (ex: MP3s, Apple iTunes, etc.) and from Internet sales where the store is located outside of Japan (ex: YesAsia)

They have a daily chart as well as a weekly one don't they?
I think some people get really excited when an artist gets to #1 on one of the days and not just at the end of the week unlike in other countries, still seems like a lot of work to update daily..

Another question about Oricon -

When does Oricon closes its charts for the year? I heard that they close on the last day of November, so technically the year sales stop at November, what about the sales in December then? Are they considered sales for the next year?

If there are daily charts, then a single may be No 1 for one day only, does that single counts as a No 1 single in Japan or does the single needs to be overall No 1 for the week to be considered a No 1 single?

Um, am I making sense?

1- Even though I can't tell this at 100%, I believe it works like that.
2- No, the daily rankings don't count that much. You've got to be there for the weekly ranking.

By the way, Oricon also has rankings for the most bought DVD's, Mags, and the prefered dramas as well.

hmm really.. I’ve had people tell me while yes asia doesn’t count , cdjapan does, though i've never heard anyone give a reason why one counts over the other.

least if this is true i can feel less guilty with ordering stuff on yes asia <<;;

You're correct, CDJapan sales do actually count. YesAsia does not count because its headquarters are not based in Japan; they're based in Hong Kong. Record sales must occur in Japan for them to count in the Oricon charts.
