only bad thing about this program is that there is no way to preview...so sometime subtitles is off sync and you will have to adjust it thru substation alpha or subtitle workshop to get it right.

anyone knows of a good guide to remux the audio from one source to another...like i have some original chinese dvds...i wish to take the viet audio and put it in...since the original chinese have better video quality?

these are 2 guides i wrote when Wu Xia Fan Subbers were active, so I created some guides for them to use.

This one was use to help translate Tian Long Bat Bu (Demi God Semi Devils) if you have the original chinese subtitles in sup format and was gonna translate it from Chinese to English. Should be applicable to anyone who have a .sup subtitle files extracted from a dvd and wish to translate it to another language. If the text are not showing up...you will need to play with the global settings in srt2sup.

This is a timing guide using Virtual Dub and SubStation Alpha which I was using for CCTV Xiao Ao Jiang Hu (Blood Cold, Proud Heart). This guide assumes you are using a video/audio source that virtual dub supports and that there are hard coded subtitles on there. This is a really a time intensive way of doing it to match up the english subs with the hard coded chinese subs so that it will overwrite the hard coded subs.

This tip was from junkboy for recent Jdramas:

It gives very detailed synopsis' of recent dramas using the japanese script
of each show. The scripts aren't entirely complete, but still pretty good.

You can check out what dramas they have by clicking on the "Categories" link
on the right side. You'll have to at least know how to read the drama titles
in japanese or recognize them.

Also, anyone who wants to translate the new fall season(or any new season) Jdramas/tw dramas/modern idol cdramas, pm me for the timed srt files. I can get them 2-3 days within air date if its popular, or within a week for any jdrama or tw drama.

Some good news for Mac OS X users who want to jump into fansubbing.
Found a very nice FREE subtitle tool called MIYU.

I would like to add that this tutorial gives one of the best on adding permanent subtitles to an avi file.

If you already have Vobsub or VirtualDub and not sure if it's linked, you can always uninstall the programs and install VirtualDub first and then Vobsub and choose the options listed on the tutorial.

if you already have the subtitle file (.srt) and the avi file, you do not need vobsub. VirtualDub will do all the work. Smile

just a tip: when you're adding the subtitle file and you have to select the TextSub, if it's not there then uninstall and re-install like above. that worked for me.

Here are links to some utilities I wrote for manipulating .srt and .ssa files:

Note that I wrote all three of these in Tcl so that they will all run on Windows, OSX, or any UNIX variant. Windows users will want to remove the line that looks like "exec tclsh "$0" ${1+"$@"}" I believe.

Hmm, old topic, but...

I love VisualSubSync. It'll make a downsampled WAV file from an AVI for timing, it can convert to and from SRT/SSA, video preview, click-and-drag timing... It's a very fast subbing tool once you use the hotkeys.

I have a problem. I installed cambodian fonts and they work just fine. I was wondering if there is a program to put cambodian subs in. I tried aegisub and divx media subtitler but all i see are boxes and weird character symbols.

I just got done reviewing all the resources mentioned here thus far. After trying every tool and resource, I concluded that the best (although, still not perfect) subtitle tool was Visual SubSync. http://visualsubsync.corecodec.org/

I liked it because 1)
1) Has the ability to see video and wave peaks at the same time. So I have the ability to take the subtitle file such as *.srt and adjust the timing, edit the words and insert/delete lines.

2) Adjusting the timing of subtitle sequence was easy to do by seeing the peeks of the wave . The tools allow you to slide the brackets around and adjust each side of the subtitle timing bracket. The time of the subtitles automatically adjusts. Even inserting lines or delting lines, this tool automatically renumbers everything. Nice!

3) As I always felt the need to edit the wording of the existing subtitles due to poor translation, I found it wonderful to watch the video, have the subtitles scroll along and the wave too and just pause to make adjustments.

I realize that there are some tools that auto-create timings for lines to be inserted if you're doing a subtitle project from scrath. This tool doesn't do that. You can add and delete, but there is no auto-creation of auto finding brackets as I've seen in some other tools.

To edit existing subtitles, this tool is absolutely the best that I've seen thus far. If you know of something better, please let me know because I'm always looking for something better.

The only two issues that I noticed that should be addressed with this product are
1) The ability to see the subtitles on the actual video itself as opposed to the running text on the sidescreen. Although, the subtitle text scrolled along, I didn't like the the fact that the subtitle text didn't show on the video screen because I wanted to see if I had enough time to read the text based on my adjustments. You couldn't really do that unless you ran another player of the video at the same time. Making saves in this tool, automatically update the subtitles only and so the secondary video player would enable me to clearly assess the text and reading time issues. As I ran my few projects of Bright Girl using my AMD 64 bit processing 2 gig RAM machine, I found that performance was not an issue. The only thing I found important that not many people have is two monitors hooked up to my twin monitor PCI Express Video card. I have 2 19" monitors and so I was able to have the wave peak view and subtitles on one screen. On the other screen, I ran the detached video of the tool and a shrunk version of the video using an alternate video player such as Windows Media Player to see the impacts of my changes.
Any changes that I saved in the Tool automatically shows up in Windows Media Player by just sliding the rewind slide rule just a bit backwards or forwards.

2) The second issue was not being able to port the project to an MKV, OGM or AVI format as one Video File. Since this tool is really intended to adust the Subtitles and not Video, I guess I can overlook this feature.

By the way, when burning my projects to DVD, I found that the best tools are ConvertXtoDVD. Extracting subtitles were done easily with VirtualDubMod and MKVExtractGUI. When it came to converting MKV's and OGM's to AVI, the two tools that I've been using are VitualDubMod and OpenVideoConverter.
