I like softsubs because it gives me the option to turn subs off.
Hardsubs are just a waste of bandwidth/time/money.
Need hardsubs for your dvd player? encode them yourself. |
Ummm... Then save your bandwidth/time/money by not downloading the hardsubs. Problem fixed! |
I know what your thinking, though, I mean bandwidth/time/money is being wasted by everyone.. if there are 2 releases of something thats twice as much bandwidth/time/money needed to get that release out. Instead of focusing all bandwidth on the 1 release. I think there many series to go around, by making 2 versions of something means we might be missing out on another series that could have been released instead.

Let's use Densha Otoko that recently was hardsubbed, and has already been partially softsubbed, as an example.
The softsubs: Are much farther through the series, you can fix yourself, you don't have to re-download video.
The hardsubs: Based on the softsub translations, no extra translating work. The timers and editors couldn't translate something else anyway, it's not what they do. Couldn't sub another series anyway.
Also, it's listed on animesuki, a LOT more people see it there than on D-Addicts. Also shows up on D-A as being eng subbed, so people who don't even look at the RAWs here on this site will still see it.
Some people are... not very computer litterate. Some people really can't manage to install vobsub or download MPC or BS Player, or can't figure out how to name the sub and video the same in the same directory. Some people wonder what a directory is. It does happen. The hardsubs "just work."
The hardsubs have kareoke. Some people care.
Both are good. I prefer soft, but I see how hard can be useful._________________

I prefer soft subs for a number of reasons:
1. I'm not able to get hardsubs because I can't download torrent files
2. I may already have the vid file either on vcd or one of my friends has it and all I need are the subs.
3. I can change how the subs look to my liking with regards to font, size, colour and positioning.
If anyone knows of more places that offer softsubs for Korean/Japanese/Taiwanese series could you pm me because there are some shows out there that's I'd like that are not listed under the soft sub section here.
