Based on a novel by Jang Jung Il called Tell Me Lies (for which the author served 2 months in prsion for obscenity in 1995), and directed by one of Korea's more radical filmmakers, Jang Sun-woo (A Petal, Resurrection of the Little Match Girl), Lies tells the story of the relationship between Y, an 18 year old highschool student, and J, a 38 year old married sculptor. Their sexual encounters quickly veer into the realm of s&m and their pursuit of pleasure in pain becomes the main focus of their lives. The film is shot in a semi-documentary style; interviews with the actors talking about their roles are included in the film, blurring the distinction between reality and fantasy (a distinction explored in his next film, Match Girl).
This is a rip of the US dvd, the only uncut version available. The Korean release, initially banned, was released in 1999 with 15 minutes cut from it! (The korean release of In the Realm of The Senses, to which Lies can be compared, suffered the same fate).

Yeah, the writer was put in jail for writing a novel with lots of extreme sex in it. In 1995. It amazes me how fuct this country is sometimes. 'Good, that guy who wrote some dirty words is behind bars! ' Meanwhile, thousands of men are **** 15, 16, 17-year old girls at the local red light district. every night. (Slap those brothel owners on the wrists - 'their kickbacks will help me put my kids through school' say the cops in the station next door to the red light district). Utter hypocrisy. (Well, all governments are like that, though, Korea's not unique in that regard).

Matt77, that's quite a disturbing commentary... I've watched "Samaria" this week. Frankly, I don't know what to make of it.
I can imagine how sleeping with strangers for easy money might appeal to some teen girls at a time where they just need so much useless crap. Money, Insert A in B, done, good bye.
I can also see how discovering that your child doing this must be devastating for a father.
Man, in the end it's just sad.

hmm interesting...looking forward to it (not in a perverted way of course hehe). Is it one of those films where they try to package porn into art?
Do people in Korea get arrested often for writing smut and porn? I mean, writers for Playboy dont get arrested no?
Well Samsara was really good. The first girl did it because she was naive. The second girl did it because she turned coocoo (I think the two girls are more than just friends) and she did it for redemption.. It is more than inserting A into B lol..

| Regarding prostitution in Korea, what you see in Samaria is one of the least common forms of prostitution here. 'Paid dating' by teenage girls certainly happens (and probably a lot) but its still very small compared to the traffic that goes through the red light districts. 'Bad Guy' also by Kim Ki-duk catches that kind of life well (while 'The First Amendment' trivializes it) but the thing is a sizeable number of the prostitutes imprisoned in the red light districts are teenage girls. That's what I was referring to above - not paid dating. Again, the link i provided above describes it well. Also, Seoul city has said it wants to phase out its red light districts by 2008 (I guess that gives the pimps and gangs enough time to come up with other ways of running the business).

| It shouldnt be that much of a problem really. NYC time square used to be the notorious red light district, and Guiliani turned it upside down in couple of years... but yea... I dont think there was much teenage prostitution though. I dont know why, but among more "advanced " nations, U.S. seems to have less of teenage prostitution than, lets say Japan.. Or maybe they are just not reported.

xiaryx I'm guessing you meant Samaria cause there is another movie called Samsara.
matt that was a good article, but i guess many nations face this problem. Well Korea has to go one way or the other, Legalise it or Close it ALL down. This way the women will know their legal options. _________________ What kind of adult we'll be depends on what it'll leave us.
