Shukan Maki Yoko (Weekly Yoko Maki) is an anthology series featuring Yoko Maki. The 12 episode series (plus one behind-the-scenes special) tells 12 unrelated stories. The only thing that ties the stories together is their star, Yoko Maki.

They are a collection of parodies, homages and send ups, of some of the Japanese TV and Film industry’s favorite genres. Some are funny, some tragic… and some, just plain odd.

My thanks to gryzze for uploading the series. And to tianj for providing the timing sheets for the (704x396) episodes.

** And a word of thanks to BMW who managed to pry the timing for the final 5 episodes of the series off my wonky set of discs. He made my life a lot easier. **

These English subtitles are not meant to be looked at as literal translations of the dialogue contained in the episodes. My Japanese language skills simply aren’t up to that.
In short; I bought a copy of the series that came with “English Subtitles”. Said copy came from Taiwan and, as is usually the case, the subs are awful. So I’ve been going through them, line by line, editing, rewriting and in some cases… guessing.
For the Yoko Maki fans out there… I hope these are helpful.

I’ll try to put up an episode or two every week. But no promises. I’ll also seed each episode as I post the subs for it. Hopefully others will help.

Geezer, welcome! great job with the post. i edited the Subject line a bit to match the other titles. this way, MoerkJ's script can pick it up and add it to the database.

A quick note on episode 3.

As the leading ladies always did in this sort of movie, Yoko sings a song in the middle of the episode. It is, I expect, a parody of the songs used back in the day, and as such it seems to have confused the heck out of the Chinese subbers that I'm using as my main reference.

Since I couldn't make any sense out of their version of the lyrics, I decided to give the song a pass. But I thought it only right to make their version available. So here you go. The Japanese to Chinese to English translation of Yoko's ballad.

The night of noon, everything will die out

A quick bit of trivia about Episode #6.

When Yoko is telling Nukumizu Youichi his fortune, she's actually recounting the plot of a very popular Takakura Ken movie titled; "Haruka Naru Yama no Yobigoe" ("A Distant Cry From Spring") 1980.

A note about the subs for the Special: I decided to omit the dialogue from the brief scenes they showed from the series. Bopping back and forth between random bits of dialogue from the episodes, and the comments the actors were making off camera, seemed confusing (to me) when it was just printed on the screen as subtitles.

Besides, it was all stuff you already read while watching the earlier episodes and I thought this would give you a chance to look at the actors faces as they worked.

Enjoy. I certainly did.

And yes... even though I watched the episodes over and over while doing the subbing... a few of them still puzzle the heck out of me.
