A third posiibility - along with Media Player Classic with ffdshow (two parts -- audio and video) and the stand-alone GOM Player -- is KMPlayer (also stand-alone):
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/KMPlayer/1125962534/1
KMPlayer plays many files that others won't. Like GOM, KMPlayer has a setting to increase process priority if playback stutters.
HTH!
[Edit, addition]
ffdshow is typically installed as part of the K-Lite package. More recent "builds" can be found at
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941&package_id=214245
To avoid system clutter, though, it is best to select a K-Lite install option that installs a minimum of "stuff" -- just what's needed for playback.
With all three of MPC, Gom and KM, one is able to move soft subtitles or those in MKV files to the black band below the picture on widescreen monitors. You can also select a better typeface (i.e., font); I use Helvetica Rounded Condensed.
