The reason is probably that VLC doesn't recognize the encoding properly. The endocing is UTF-16LE. Probably, you need to convert files into SHIFT-JIS encoding. You can do it in almost any good text editor. Here is a list of available text editors (including free ones for mac platform): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_text_editors |
Rokonoko, sankyu for the hint and moreover for what you do!

Sorry to say, but I've accidentally skipped first 2 episodes : ( The good news is that there are the scripts for them at http://jdrama.cc. They are good enough even to make subs. I hope, someone can do this for us all ; )

I can work on it but I wont have time until Tuesday the 29th to really work on it so if someone beats me to it then go for it! But if not then it'll just get postponed until Golden Week starts and I'm on break from University.
I've started episode one but some of the Japanese on the page that rokonoko posted is not the same as the audio in the show so I have to take my time and really listen to what is being said so I can correct it, and that's what's going to take the longest, checking the speaking vs the script. Anyway I have to stop working on it for the night cause I have class in the morning and it's 2 am right now, but I'll work on it when I get the chance. But like I said if someone beats me to it that's ok. So anyone feel free to make the subs lol._________________ credit for signature goes to me (original picture News calender)

@Rokonoko,
You're the best!!! Thank you so much!!! 万歳!万歳!万歳!
Edit:
@Oguri_Shun_fan,
Haruspex is working on subs for Around 40. Maybe he's open to doing a collaboration. In addition, with CC, there will always be missing text because closed captioning doesn't always display what is said. From my experiences with Daisuki, a lot of the missing captions could be considered information that doesn't really add to the scene. It's the same with English CC. Fortunately, I've never had to deal with wrong Kanji or Kana.

Also, I've found what the problem with Around 40 subs was. I was recording the wrong channel. It's a pity it took me so long to figure out. This to say, I wasn't able to record episode 3 subs, either : (

if Haruspex is going to do the Japanese subs too than I wont work on them, it would take me a while anyway since Japanese, one isn't my native language, and two I've only been studying it for 3 years so there still words and kanji that I don't know so checking the CC takes time and energy lol._________________ credit for signature goes to me (original picture News calender)

I just wanted to drop a line here and thank you again for all these wonderful releases you've been giving us. It truly helps out those who are eager to learn or better their Japanese and makes it easier for viewers to follow the script if they already know how to read Japanese.
Plus, your subtitles are a godsend to fansubbers alike because it helps out with the translating and timings.
Capturing all of these closed captions must take time and effort and I for one along with the rest of the community really appreciated what you're doing for us. _________________ watching: 1 Mom & 3 Dads, Around 40, Gokusen 3, Fated To Love You, Hokaben, Last Friends, Osen, Puzzle, ROOKIES, They Kiss Again, Zettai Kareshi

| Have a good Golden Week, Rokonoko, even if it means we might miss some Japanese scripts here and there. Thank you for providing these scripts for us. I'm virtually reading ALL of them, partly because I don't have time to watch the dramas, but more importantly because you went through the trouble to make the scripts.
