Thanks very much as usual for your work. As soon as we have completed our French "Bara" subs, we shall start subbing Atsuhime and your srt will be a great help indeed. So, for that, we are extremely grateful Smile

Thank you for your work on the Subs. I just got them working. Can you explain the best way I would have to to now work the Japanese Subtitles to English? I mean, is there a way to print the srt to text while I translate. Then reload the new Eng as srt andplug them in.
I would think there has to be a better way than doing a "print screen" each time the subtitile pops up on the screen.
Once again Roko, domo arigato!

I was very excited to find these Japanese subtitle files. Makes for far better listening/reading practice than the English subs.

Problem is, they come up as bakamoji (just boxes). I don't normally have this problem with any other functions on my computer, but apparently either my VLC media player or the text program it reads the srt files with doesn't know how to read it right.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

@Tai, I'm sorry, but I cannot help you with fansubbing business. Don't know anything about how to make translations and so on.

@toranosuke, your problem is quite common actually. The problem is that the subs are in Unicode encoding (UTF-16LE, to be precise). I don't know why so many programs cannot work with it, considering it is a de-facto standard in operating system level text processing. You probably need to convert the subs to SHIFT-JIS encoding. Try to google it.

Ah, well I got it working in Windows Media Player at least. Beautiful, clean font. I'm very excited now to watch this series... if only we had subtitles, in one language or another, for the first four episodes...

Thanks for the suggestion Rokonoko.

This is "sort of" true. But it is more wishful thinking on the part of the users. UTF has caught up with the web. However, Windows programmers haven't been trained to handle UTF; most of them still program in ASCII. The reason is that, as you can see in the graph below, UTF was non-existent in real-world use in 2001. And, many programs in use today are based on code written back then. As a result, many Windows-based software cannot handle UTF. It is VERY difficult to convert an application to UTF, which is why many programmers choose not to bother. Several of my applications, such as ACDSee and Nero 6 (I haven't purchased the upgrade) do not work with UTF. The solution is usually to enable the "extend support of advanced text services to all programs" in Windows so that the non-UTF applications work. There is a workaround, released by Microsoft called AppLocale. Google for it. It allows you to run an application temporarily in the language of your choice (i.e. run something like VLC with Japanese character support.)

toranosuke wrote that the srt was not opening to see the subtitle. Of course we all thank rokonoko for posting these.
The best way to view the srt is to put it in a folder with the .avi file and rename them so they both match.
ex.
Atsuhime 19.avi
Atsuhime 19.srt
Once you have them named with spaces and letters equal, put in a folder ex AtsuhimeEp19 [folder] now when you open it from your player, you will see rokonoko's subtitles. If you have more problems look at AfterDawn.com search srt. Enjoy the Princess with one of the shortest career's.
Personally, I would like to see NHK do a series on Ieyasu and the Englishman Adams. He was close to putting a Navy together. A very interesting story, unlike the fictional Shogun movie made; the real story is much more entertaining.
