I sure like chinese drama a lot, but I need english subs for understanding. My wife is vietnamese, but I guess it's very difficult to get the vietnamese subs as well. I don't have any favourite series. Sofar I've downloaded ROTK, WAB and My date with a vampire part 3, but this one has no english subs sofar.
I'll help with the seeding.

Nah, I don't even know how old you are Laugh plus I watch them, too. I'm just saying that from what I observe. It depends on what you prefer to watch, too. My mom always falls asleep when watching cdramas so I can't even bug her when I don't understand something, but my dad prefers them.

I dunno, I try not to judge it by where the productions are from, but as you say, on a general trend, the Mainland dramas seem to be more authentic, and for the most part, stick closer to the novel characterizations. HK dramas were filled with great actors back in the day, but it seems that the HK penchant for silliness has ruined a lot of costume dramas from there, and also the use of bad CG. Finally, Taiwan costume dramas were always considered the worst, because the acting was usually terrible (usually some idol), the production values were low, and the scripts were all sorts of messed up (thank Yang Pei Pei).

Fair enough, but I guess I don't mind Yang Pei Pei so much like State of Divinity 2000 & Return of the Condor Heroes 1998... hehe, maybe I like Richie Ren even if he don't fit in the roles that well Tongue I just see it as "different," since I've never read the novels.

I can help with translations for Jin Yong dramas, but they wouldn't be entirely accurate. If someone would time them and edit them, I could push out translations pretty fast.

Hmm... want to try giving out some titles that you guys are interested in?

After thinking about it & from reading what people has already named... some options (storyline, originality & entertainment value in mind):
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
[I personally have not watched this yet, b/c by the time this came out, I had watched the movie 10+ times, raw, subtitles, English dub, so I didn't like the idea of a tv adaptation, but all the reviews I've heard has been positive so it must be good, 34 episodes, dvd available].

JY - State of Divinity (any version)
[Maybe biased, but my favorite JY story...]

GL - Legendary Siblings
The Taiwanese version is like a idol drama, but nevertheless fun to watch.

Singapore's White Snake, Green Snake (a lot of traditional legend stuff in here, very original)

I'll sleep on it... for more.

State of Divinity 2001 or DGSD/TLBB 2003 I already have copies of, so I could do those. I can also do LoCH2003. I only know Mandarin, but if you have a Mandarin dub of the older works, I could do that too.. =)

Fellow Jin Yong freak here. Would love to see SOD 2001 or DGSD 2003 translated. Unfortunately I can only understand the vietnamese dubbed version and my vietnamese is pretty poor to begin with Tongue

For timing though you could probably just use the chinese sub timing off the DVD (assuming there is chinese subs off the DVD, I'll be getting the DGSD DVD set soon so I can confirm that when I get it).

Heh, you should read V for Vendetta. Go check it out next time you're at Borders/B&N.

As for being old, everyone is old compared to iceberri. I mean, crap, you were almost born in the 1990's! Big Smile

@Ruro: My command of the ancient language isn't that great (in terms of proverbs and such) but I can definitely translate so that 90% of what's going on will be understandable...

This looks like greatness in the happening.

In light of the upcoming election, I'll say what "they" say, we should to 'vote to preserve democracy.'

the only thing I hate about most Chinese mainland DVDs is you can't turn off the subs--I had hoped I would be able to do it w/ my own DGSD 2003 DVDs, but no such luck, good thing it was in widescreen format.

Isn't it a good thing not being able to turn off the subs? I can read and write some Japanese, and sometimes when I watch Cdramas it feels like I'm somehow learning Chinese subconsciously by hearing the dialogues and seeing the kanji at the same time. ^_^

Anyway, sorry for mentioning A step into the past again, but somebody said something about being able to get DVDs, so I just wanted to remind you that JTV is just waiting for the DVDs for that series to continue their subbing work. :-) (it says so on their site anyway)
But maybe it only applied to other series.

a heads up for those in SoCal, the local station, KSCI-TV ( KSCI-18 ) will begin airing its 1st chinese drama w/ eng subs starting Nov 8 at the 7pm-8pm timeslot. So for those who can capture, this is something that can be shared.

The series is called The Last Empress and stars Li Ya Peng, Shui Ling, and Huang Yi (info on the series: http://ent.sina.com.cn/v/f/mdhf/ )

Interesting, since this is the first, wonder what were the factors that made it possible..

Too bad that I'm in the Midwest though, we practically don't have any Asian channels.

Wang Ya Nan also part of the cast (sizeable role) & it's centered on Shui Ling's role as a concubine..

I couldn't believe it when I saw a commercial for it! I'll capture it to get the english subs. I have the DVDs too. That's probably better quality...hopefully I'll get my dvd burner soon.

Edit: On another note, I am so excited that there are people who want to translate c-dramas! w00t

So how does one sub? Is someone going to do the timing and everything and I just fill in the text boxes? How does this work? What software is used?

The timing is one tiresome job so best if there is a dvd source, but creidesca raised up a good point... that a lot of Mainland released DVDs have permanent subtitles and there's no way you can tell from the box so I dunno.

I have my little winter break in about 2 weeks, maybe I can look for titles & check them out (i.e. whether permanant or cc)--unless there are enthusiastic timers out there...
