I can confirm that these embedded subs are displayed correctly with Mplayer OSX Extended revision 10 (Mac OSX).
As told by Rollins, they won't pop up automatically. Just select the subs stream with the subs selection button.

as far as i understand, this is actually not an AVI. it's basically MPEG4 ISO and only renamed to .avi.
i don't like the behaviors of VLC. the player should at least complain about file type mismatch.
imo, .renaming to .mp4 (or even .mkv) is more reasonable and more compatible.
it should work with ANY directshow based players combined with haali's splitter and codecs.
also i think subs are not displayed automatically because subtitle track is not defaulted when muxing.
btw, you can't really be against releasing softsub. it can be easily extracted from this file in .srt format.
