I also found out that this dorama is entertaining and fresh. It's like reading salad days or other shoujo manga. And I also agree, Eiri's acting is very good, especially in the 6th episode. Kyoko Fukada character is almost the same with her other characters in other drama, the all cutie nice kind naive girl. Tanihara sousuke... hmm.... They seems tried to developed kyoko - tanihara relations/story, but up until now, I still didn't get the chemistry. The students chemistry, on the contrary, is very cute ^^ I really like tomu and eiri couple. Yay for them ^^
I'm glad you've join the forum...I also think that the teachers couples not that well developed but give it time..it's only been the 6th episode....a lot can happen in 5 episodes.

Yay for love conquers all. Hmm, perhaps you're right. Should wait some more to see later episode for principal - mai's interaction.
The principle iss single and he looks lonely but he never said that he was... maybe he implied it though... poor guy...
Episode 6 was good but it wasn't as great as I expected. This episode really had a lot of story building. I can't wait till the next episode. I think starting now we can start to tell whether this drama will be mediocre or great.
Here are some of my thoughts on Episode 6. Please read only after watching episode 6.

First of all, for you people that thought Kazuki was gay, it's been proven he isn't in this episode. Well, in the last episode he silently confessed to us but in this episode he confessed to Hitomi. Hitomi also confessed to Natsumi that she likes Kazuki so that makes 5 out of 5 for the couples forming couples. I figured couples 2-5 would get together but I thought Hitomi would just like Kazuki and Kazuki would remain liking Hitomi. Now the fun starts.
About the last part before the previews start, I don't think Kazuki and Hitomi are going to kiss. If they were going to kiss, they would have kissed. Damn people trying to get higher ratings and fooling us!
The love hotel parts were not what I expected. I thought they would do some more outrageous things. When Toumu sang for Eiri, I suppose that was sweet but these scenes had barely any comedy in them. I thought they could have made this so much better.
I'm happy Kageyama sensei didn't have much to do this episode. She is kind of boring and just tries to scare/scold everyone and cause trouble. She has a boring character too.
I think the highlight of this episode was the principle and Mai-chan together watching the fireworks. They make a good couple and we all know the principle is starting to have feelings for Mai-chan.
I kind of figured Toumu and Eiri would get together. I think Eiri did a great job in her part as always. Toumu wasn't very funny this episode but I guess he couldn't be considering the situation.
I didn't like how they portrayed the couples this episode. It seemed so normal and didn't bring out the inner quirkiness that each couples have. A lot of the characters were out of their normal character IMO. I hope they don't keep this up. Rei didn't even use the spray at all this episode. She wasn't as bossy, and I liked that part of her character.
Overall, I think this episode was trying to be romantic and sweet. It wasn't very true to the nature of how I thought the show was trying to be, which was having unique and different characters go through weird situations in their own special way. It kind of seemed so mono if you know what I mean. Hopefully the next episode is better.
Here are some questions for you guys.
How many of the couples do you think will break up before the end of the show?
How many of the couples do you think will have sex by the end of the show? (And do you think Toumu and Eiri already did?)
Do you think any of them will get expelled?
What episode do you expect Mai-chan and the principle to get together? (Or do you think it's never going to happen?)
How many episodes do you think this will last?
Now that we have 5 couples, which couple is your favorite and why?
Do you think Kageyama is a virgin?
How many girls do you think are lesbians in the school? (There are 600 girls and Natsumi is at least 1)
How many girls do you think are virgins? (Eiri isn't one and i'm sure that other girl that took Ma-kun away from Eiri isn't one either so that's at least 2/600.)
Alright... now I'm just making up stupid questions... oh well... answer the ones you want to ^_^

Yea now that you mention it it was a pretty uncharacteristic episode, though I don't really understand much.
For the long list of questions here are my predictions:
None of the couples will break up I think, can't see them doing that (For ratings of course)
They can probably make an episode....probably couple #4 and how ackward it will be for them. But I predict only 1 couple at most. No Eiriand Tomu didn't I think.
None of them are going to be expelled but I predict a GTO moment here...(not really) where they all rebel becuase they are being forced to leave. Yet in the end they stay...
The principle and mai chan will probably never acknowledge themselves as together I think.
To be honest, I think it matters to the ratings of this show. Which largely depends on the next episodes ratings. I always see if they had a good episode the previous week then the episode the next week has a little higher ratings. Seeing how it wasn't that good this week.. I only hope for the best. (The exception to this rule is Week 5 of seasons or week 6....always have lower ratings). My prediction is at least 10...hopefully not the 8...
All the couples are great to me. But I don't know why I always route for the main characters. They just have more appeal than the rest of them. Which i know sounds stupid but oh well. I guess it's becuase they seem most real to me, most functional and most intune with each other (Part of a team, to solve problems). Though Kazu and Hitomi still haven't officially been together.
I thought she was a lesbian for a second......acutally a few episodes. OR it's probably becuase her husband or something left her or did something really hurtful I guess. A guy figure........that's it.....she just has too much hate for men.
For the last 2 questions I really don't know and not sure its that important, but since it's an "all girls school" I'm going to assume it's bound to be in the 10-20%.....I think that's the statistic that they say is naturally homosexual. For the people who are virgins, probably most of them. I'm not even sure Eiri did sleep with Ma-kun. I know she said so....but she just seemed so unexperienced in the love hotel.
Oh I just have a question about the preview. Why was hitomi "stripping" and probably really mad....

In response to wongo and about episode 6 previews
Hidden:
Hitomi said "Isn't it fine since we are dating." Yeah she seemed pissy saying that.
Then at the last second she said "If you want to go to Toumu, why don't you just go already!" So yeah she is upset and feeling insecure.
At the end of episode 6 before it goes to the preview, Kazuki tells Hitomi that he is over Toumu. I think that pretty much makes it official that they are dating. So now it's Hitomi -> Kazuki, Kazuki -> Hitomi and probably still Toumu.
Kageyama does hate men and that's why I thought she is still a virgin. Maybe she got screwed over by someone before. Apparently she doesn't forget things so she must have grudges against a lot of people.
10-20% of people are naturally homosexual? Really? Where are you getting the numbers from? So for every 10 hot chicks I want to ask out, 1-2 of them are lesbians?! This is bad news... I thought it would be a higher % because they are in an all girls school but dang... 10-20% is a lot. As for the virgin part... I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher. I mean, girls at an all girls school are super horny.

Has there been any clear expressions of whether Hitomi is gay or not? That little bit at the first episode just killed the series for me. It felt like half the second episode focused on Kazu just taunting him about it and any enjoyment I got out of this series was just crushed by that. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the rest of it D:

Hitomi is not a lesbian. Kazuki is bisexual or at the very least least bi-curious. Yes there has been clear expressions and conversations about this. You will just have to keep on watching to find out. I think you got the characters backwards. Hitomi, the girl, is teasing Kazuki, the guy, about liking Toumu, Kazuki's best friend.

I think this episode uphold the same quality as the episodes before it. I think all episodes were enjoyable, plus even though they have covered vastly different topics (all serious topics in high school kids lives) all have been humorous and each one has done excellent character development. I think the pacing is wonderful. To have an immediate main cast of 10 (the kids) and 4 side characters (mai, proncipal, mean lady, seitokaichou) I think this show is going an EXCELLENT job of character development. We are half way over and we know a good deal about all of the main characters personal life (well except kazu... but he's the narrator the story is about him I guess so of course we will be exposed later without a doubt. Or maybe his personal life is what the show is about... although I personally think its mai-chan and principal's relationship). But I'm loving this show. And I actually never thought about the region 2 dvd. I will buy this one. But the only drama I remember being put on dvd was Hero, I happened to be in japan at the time it was put on dvd, so its the only one I remember, lol.
Well in my limited view, if you entertain the thought of kissing a man in the mouth, I will refer to you as gay. This can include bi-sexuals. So me calls him gay. My opinion of kazu is he doesn't know what he wants. I believe he is open to any type love, but he hasn't been around girls that much, so he is not sure about how he feels about them. In contrast he's been around genki-kun his entire life, he knows he likes him. Now that he's around hitomi he is finding, I can feel for her too. But thats just my opinion.
Hitomi stated that she wanted her first kiss to be from someone who she really liked. She said like 3 times in the episode that it was okay for kazu to kiss her. She was severely upset when he did not kiss her any of those times, each time she was just so heart broken, lol. So its safe to say hitomi likes kazu. And to be honest, I think hitomi would benefit the most from a relationship. As stressed as she is some <cough> "thang-thang" would do wonders for her. Man she has it rough at home.
Is kazu president or hitomi? I'm not sure who is pres and vice pres.
seitokaichou (natsumi) was really nice this episode. Seeing her with emotion was nice. I like her when she's not a ****. She reminds me of juri from utena. She is prettier in love. I hate that smug look on her, but in tears, so emotionful and pretty in my opinion.
Oh yea I confused my current episode of tomorrow with my current episode of gakko ja... I read the spoilers, lol. Oh well, lol.
Edit: I wonder if the other student council members are recruited/ appointed the same way as as hitomi was. If I like you, your on the team....
Edit 2: Also germ girl has had sex too (the abortion wasn't from playing doctor), so she is not a virgin. So thats 3 of 600

I think the series is silly, and sometimes embarrassingly so.
Still, the episode about a 16-year-old coping with pregnancy had merit.
I was surprised that two high school kids could so easily get into a love hotel -- does anybody know if that really is the case?
None of the demerits concern me since I love Kyoko and I need the episodes for language study.
And, it is pleasant to get silly for 45 minutes!

Well I personally think that its the same thing as, well you have to be 18 to get into a strip club, or 21 to buy alcohol. There are rules, but whether the owner enforces them are up to them. I have had constant access to alchol since high school (don't drink though) and also I know more than one strip club I could of got into at 16. So it depends on the owners policy.
Since eiri has stated she is not a virgin, there is a possibily that ma-kun could of took her to a love hotel. Either way eiri looked way more comfortable there, as if she had been there before.
I thought that most kids who want to have sex go to love hotel, because both live with their parents. I was supposed to go to a love hotel, but it never worked out. I'm not sure what they ask you before they give you the keys. But I'm sure that if you don't act like a kid they won't treat you like one... but I should ask about this... it seems interesting.
Competely off topic and unrelated to the current discussion, I found some pretty interesting stuff on love hotels.
Spoiler for size and its off topic

Love Hotels
In the land of a thousand neighbors, where mom, dad and their mom and dad and their two children have historically resided under one roof - there has always been the problem of finding a little personal space. And even if you don't live with a lot of other people, sometimes the paper-thin walls of most apaatos keep you intimately involved in the goings on of the next-door Nakamotos. You know she likes it rough, that her Mom is coming to visit and their teenage son is somehow implicated in an incident at school that involves a knife, a reel of duct tape and several feet of rope. Behind closed doors, Japan is a little more exciting than its international image.
So if you live in a gaijin apaato with one-inch plywood walls and your screamer girlfriend or man with a moan is tired of biting the pillow, you can make all the noise you want at your nearest no-tell hotel. Or perhaps you simply want to do it in a converted Cadillac, pretend you are on an alien space ship or are curious to see what Hello Kitty Bondage is all about. One thing is for sure. Whatever your fantasy, whatever your desire, they have a room for it.
However, the love hotel is changing - and the news is both good and bad. The good news is they've gone upscale, lost some of their sleazy associations and the decors are somewhat more modern. They've even changed their name. Japanese people never say "rabu hoteru" anymore, and although the abbreviation "rabuho" is still used, the hotels always refer to themselves as "fashion hotels" (in Kansai) and "couples hotels" or "boutique hotels" (in Kanto). Most young people aren't embarrassed about going to them anymore, either. What that means for you, the amorous gaijin, is that it's easier to convince your significant other to visit one of those kinky rooms with round beds and mirrors on the ceiling. In fact, they may even invite you.
The bad news is that as love hotels go stylish, many are getting rid of the exciting theme rooms. They do exist, but its getting harder and harder to find places with bumper cars and bondage slings. In large part, this is due to the introduction of Japan's "New Public Morals Act", which is intended to regulate love hotels and other sex-related businesses. Hotels that have "facilities not required for the basic purposes of guest lodging" (read: that ingenious whip and wash jungle gym) are now categorized as "sex-related businesses" and can only operate in specially designated red light districts such as Shinjuku's Kabuki-cho or the Susukino area of Sapporo.
The act came about largely because the Japanese government was embarrassed by the amount of foreign media coverage of Japan's sex trade, the volume of child pornography and a general Bar-code-hairdo mentality. So they cracked the whip, so to speak. Unfortunately, they didn't realize the media coverage was often envious. Foreigners like love hotels. They're better than sushi, the Sony Walkman and hi-tech toilets. Why don't they have them back home?
Japanzine, September 2002
THE LOVE HOTEL DIARIES
Love Hotel Diaries are little books left in each room for the customers to write messages to each other. There are jottings by teenagers sharing their first sexual experiences, salarymen and OLs having afternoon trysts, and older married couples in their 40s getting away from the kids for a romantic night. Leafing through the pages, you will find some of the most interesting reading material you've ever come across. These messages come from a popular Osaka Hotel.
Written by: A 19-year-old female who had been dating her partner for about 1 year.
Recently not one single good thing has happened to me. The sex is lousy too. I don't even masturbate. Ahhhhh, I hate being a 19-year-old in this kind of shape. I want to meet someone I can be happy with. All my friends have boyfriends. I've got to find someone!
Written by: A female who met her boyfriend through "konpa" (a matchmaking party).
S-chan, we've been going out for one year now. I hope we'll spend many happy years together in the future. I love you.
Written by: A woman staying in the hotel alone after a fight with her boyfriend.
Of all the hotels I've been to, I've never found one I liked so well as this. It's easy to check in, even for a woman alone. Of course the rooms are clean too. It's not so cheap, but the rooms are nice so it's worth it. I owe a lot to this hotel. I've come here with my boyfriend about 20 times and when we have a fight, I come here alone to get out of our house. I come here a lot. And I'll probably come here again too.
Written by: A female visiting the hotel alone.
He was arrested by the police right in front of my eyes. Do you know how hard being arrested was on him? Do you know how terrible that must have made him feel? And do you know how hard it is on me to be alone? And how much harder it must be on him? Can you imagine how much more terrible his suffering must be, even than mine? No matter how hard you try to imagine it, you can never understand unless you go through it yourself.
But now I'm trying all the time to imagine just a little bit of what he must be feeling. He's going to be away for at least five years. That's a long time. Everyone is telling me not to wait for him. Five years certainly is a long time all right. Maybe I won't be able to wait, but what other choice do I have?
Written by: A lesbian office worker involved in several "open relationships" with other women.
Today one of my bosses asked me to sleep with him. What in the world am I going to do? But he's married. I told him I liked him as a joke but he took me seriously! What am I going to do???
Written by: A 22-year-old Japanese university student studying in Peking, who came with a 33-year-old man who was cheating on his wife. Their whole date was spent in the love hotel.
You can be happy even if your partner is someone else's husband.

these are the problems facing japan..
i think those r good, cos if we kept on thinking the "old way" that sex before mariage is bad, it would never workout, even God says so.
**** like getting pregnant sometimes happen, and now, we have to build a new solution to it also. not just abortion, but the opposite can also be the solution.
i think anyone can enter the love hotel since some of them has no reception desk but key vending machine

Hey, thanks so much to the two who answered me so quickly. I often wonder how accurate is the image of Japan I see in these doramas, so it is reassuring that I can just post in the forum with a question.
I should have known that there would be automated check-ins for some love hotels.

Tv is Tv no matter where in the world you are. Just think about american tv. I live in american, the things that happen to the kids high school shows, not realistic. Based on reality, but still, not very likely to happen. People who write the shows often omit the bad things, unless their show is targeting a bad thing.
I have not been watching j-dramas that long but I can say, everyone is not as beautiful as drama girls. When I first went to japan, I saw a wide variety of women, its not like that on j-tv, you only see skinny pale women most of the times, and girlish sexy guy bombshells like johnny entertainment. But anyways a show like this is accurate enough (in my opinion) so that you can get a pretty good idea of japan and their culture, better than anime and manga at least. But this is entertainment...not a documentary.
