Why is it that 99% of Korean TV drama series have running time of more than 1 hr? Each episode is as long as 1hr 15 minutes!!! that's just drop dead nuts... I really hate it when they do that. They need to be cut down to 50 minutes absolute tops....

They need to learn from the Japanese.... All Japanese TV drama series I have watched range 45~ low 50's min..

Well...

In my opinion that's a GOOD thing!

Thats probably one of the advantages that K.Dramas have over J.Dramas. More content.

There are many J.Dramas that span out into less than 10 episodes. Where as K.Dramas usually go about 15 on average AND 1.2 Hours an Episode!

*edit* Hell yeah, 500 posts Laugh Crying

Why is it that 99% of Jdramas have shorter run time than Kdramas? Each episode should be over 1 hour long for more eye orgasm. They need to learn from the Koreans.

I suppose Korean dramas are not for the ADD-afflicted.

(but wait, I love them and I have ADD!!)

It seems Japan is the odd one out this time since both Korea and China have shows that are the typical 45-ish minutes as well as ones that are 70-ish minutes. While Japan is usually only 45 minutes or 25 for half-hour shows.

45 minutes per episode has worked for the Japanese for over 50 years. It works!

Of course it did and still does work. I asked a question to answer OP's question to show that it's all about personal preferences.

To clarify the time breakdown for Japanese dramas (all times w/o commercials)

- 45 minutes: Typical renzoku episode
- 90 minutes: Specials and other tanpatsu
- 25 minutes: Most afternoon renzoku
- 15 minutes: Morning renzoku, such as the NHK asadora

Also, keep in mind that since WWII, Japanese television has operated on a 4-season per year cycle, with virtually new programming across all networks each season. 12 to 13 weeks per season, therefore 10 to 12 episodes for a typical renzoku, with the remaining two to three weeks in the season for SPs, sporting events, etc.

Exceptions:
- The annual NHK Taiga drama occupies all four seasons, and leaves two to three weeks for the holiday specials.
- Wataru Seken was Oni Bakari (TBS), which airs across four consecutive seasons.
- Most cop shows occupy two seasons.
- Kinpachi Sensei (TBS) occupies two consecutive seasons.

I'm probably missing other things here...

That's why kdramas are more draggy with plotlines. I can't count the # of times I've watched a kdrama where they always have flashback sequences of a scene that just happened 3 minutes prior (as if we can't remember what happened just a few minutes ago!), or when they play full songs from their OST multiple times while the characters are reflecting in their lonely worlds of sorrow *cough* BOF *cough*! I like kdramas though, but I do admit to fastforwarding scenes to speed up the plot when I watch them.

Many Japanese dramas have longer running first and/or last episodes. Most I've seen are around 75 minutes, but I've seen a couple that went 90 minutes.

I don't really notice the time difference between K and J dramas all that much because the pacing tends to be different. I think the current systems work pretty well.

@TS

Why does it even matter? seriously. Do you live in Korea? Are you one in their targeted demographics? Do they make money from you in one way or another?

I'm sure these large production companies did their research, have people that actual analyze these sort of things and the best you can come up with is "I really hate it when they do that. They need to be cut down to 50 minutes absolute tops.... "

Seriously get a life.

Oh yes it matters. Most (if not all) K-dramas get ripped to a *fixed* size of around 1.5GB for each episode so the longer the running time of the episode the worse PQ it will deliver. When you're talking 1 hr 14 min running time of a video file at 1.5GB there is not enough bit rate to deliver descent PQ for 720p's. 1hr is a little better. 50 minutes would be fantastic. It doesn't make any difference for the viewers in Korea since the videos aren't compressed. This is bad for us downloaders.

That's why I'm complaining. It matters a huge.. lol.

And if adding commercials are needed please do so so that the drama running time can be cut down to 50 minutes max... 40 minutes would be even better. hell, 30 min would be awesome at 1.5GB but i think that's stretching it......

If this is really you just whining about PQ again... why did you make a new thread?
It's not that you give a crap at all how long the show is. If it was a 70 minute show and the file was 5 gigs you wouldn't be complaining now would you? This is just a new part to the same silly wank fest.
