I want to convert mp4-files into avi, is that possible with any program? And also, if it isn´t, can I convert it into something else so it can turn into a more "normal" format?

appreciate any help I can get, thanks in advance!

actually, h.264 encoded files with the .mp4 extension have been becoming the de-facto standard. Nothing "abnormal" about them. Is there a particular reason you want to spend the time converting and probably losing video quality?

I can think for one reason why she wants to convert it. Some DVD players don't play mp4-files. Unfortunately my DVD player don't play them as well. There are too many DVIX, XVID formats out there. It confuses me sometimes why my DVD player can handle this avi-file and not that avi-file, etc.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but I think you should be able to use virtualdub to encode mp4s into an avi-format.
aNToK definetely knows more about it.

My DVD player plays AVI files but not h264 or MP4's I would love to know how to convert them too. Yes I may lose video quality but I'd rather that then havig to actually sit at my computer to watch a drama.

aNToK just wanted to set the record straight regarding the "normal" comment made by the original poster.

The bad thing about H.264 and MP4 are that they require people to pay a license fee to integrate the technology into their appliances and software.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264

It took awhile for DivX to appear on consumer-grade DVD units. Even with the DivX units, each unit's price includes the cost for licensing to DivX. It is just a matter of time before you start finding H.264 on DVD players. But unfortunately they'll be expensive at first because of the additional licensing fee applied.

I'm seeing more and more anime being released in H.264. My guess here is that anime fans are more tech savvy, so more of them would rather watch their anime on PCs or hacked XBox units because they "can." But on the Asian drama front, most of its fans are average Joe's who have less knowledge of technology. Therefore, the coders should continue to use the XviD/DivX codecs, rather than releasing H.264 shows and expect the average Joe to conform in order to play them. Just look at how long it took for technology to get rid of the floppy disk...

bella_mygga_insek i'm glad that worked out for you. but instead of using virtualdub for the avi format, all you have to do is change the ".divx" file extenstion to ".avi"

for example:
sample.divx rename the file to sample.avi

happy watching

another reason to convert from mp4 is if you have a "non-ipod" portable player (like creative zen vision).

there are several converting tools.

1. SUPER - this is a dirty, but fast conversion freeware program. quality does not come out that great.

2. autogk (auto gordian knot) - another freeware. slower, but quality comes out much better. be sure to read tutorials on videohelp.com. this program can even merge subs and video into avi.

Hi,
The terms of the agreement was so difficult to understand. Is the program free, cos it also asks if I want to install the Divx codec or something like that. Can I also ask how long it took you to convert one mp4 to avi? Thanks in advance for your response.

The program is free the only catch is that you have Divx 6.1 codec installed before you use. depending on hardware, program usually takes 24mins to convert.

good luck.
