Hi -

Recently I had gotten yet another virus on my computer that wiped out my Windows XP Home Edition operating system. I couldn't find a copy of the Windows XP Home Edition, but a friend of mine had the Windows XP Professional Edition and I loaded this onto my computer in addition to all the other programs that I had to put back on my computer. One of those programs was Nero 7. But when I reloaded the Nero 7 and went to burn a DVD video, my DVD burner would not recognize the DVD+ R disc that I was using (it kept on asking me to put in a blank DVD, but even when I kept changing to another blank DVD disc, it still said the same thing). Then I tried to burn a CD and the same thing happened - Nero kept on asking me to put in a blank CD. So basically, the program does not recognize that there is a blank DVD or CD in the burner. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I've never seen this problem before the wipe-out. scratch

I have a Plextor PX- 740 UF external DVD-RW drive - when I looked online, their website says that I do not need to install any software for this hardware - that it's just plug into the computer and the computer should recognize this hardware and it should work. Can someone confirm this? So it must be my Nero 7 program that is the problem right? Sad

Thank you so much in advance for anyone who can help me! cheers

Thank you so much ap0stat3 and jholic for the firmware suggestions. I've upgraded my firmware but the problem is still the same. I've researched a bit on the web and apparently this problem comes up when I switched from Microsoft XP Home Edition to the Professional Edition.

I have desktop with WinXP Pro SP2, 1 External DVD-RW (Plextor PX740-UF), 1 internal CD-RW/DVD-ROM (came with the Compaq Presario S4100NX that I have - not sure of model #).

With both drives if I insert ANY blank DVD media (+/-/R/RW/DL etc) it will not recognize it as a “Blank” and my icon in Explorer changes from “DVD-RW Drive” to “CD Drive.” And if I try to open it, I get “E:\ is not accessible; Invalid Function.”

Someone in a Google Group wrote that he has had the same problem that I'm seeing in my computer and this is how he solved it:

1. I found Oak Technologies drivers (version 5.1.2535.0) on the internet, and
installed them, still having the issues I discussed below. I got suggestions
to downgrade Nero to 6.6, no Joy… Etc. Etc. Etc.

Do I have to downgrade to Nero 6?

2. So, today, out of frustration, I pulled my Drive out of the computer, and
disconnected my external. Rebooted the computer.

3. First I copied the .2535 drivers into the System32 folder and the
System32\Drivers and \dllcache folders. Replacing the standard Windows
drivers that were back in there.

What are Oak Technologies drivers (version 5.1.2535.0) and how do I install them into the System32 folder? For the System32 folder - I found one in my c:\windows and another one is in c:\I386. Which one do I use?

Do I use the same Oak Technologies drivers even though my DVD drivers are not this brand?
4. Went into Regedit and deleted every Key that related to either of my drives
under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
Which included:
_ControlSet001_Enum_IDE and _USBSTOR, _ControlSet002(Same subs),
_ControlSet004(Same subs) as well as _CurrentControlSet(Same subs)

When I go to the section he described, I see so many subfolders that I'm not sure where to go. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM, the following folders exist: ControlSet001, ControlSet003, CurrentControlSet, LastKnownGoodRecovery, Mounted Devices, Select, SetUp, and WPA. Where do I go and how do I know which keys to delete?

5. I rebooted the computer again (Still with no drives.) Checked that
EVERYTHING was still gone from Regedit, and that the drivers were still
version .2535.

6. Rebooted again, this time with the drives reattached…

7. And VOILA! It frigging worked! This time, I am writing down the solution… LOL

Since I'm a newbie with computer programming, etc. I'm not sure what he means by most of what he did scratch (please see my questions in red). If ANYONE can PLEASE help me with how to follow his instructions above, I'd be really grateful. I've emailed the author a couple of times but he has not replied. pale

THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR TECHINCAL ASSISTANCE!!

AM TRULY GRATEFUL FOR ANY HELP!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Not Worthy
